Per above article...

His firearm discharged a bullet when he was cleaning it in his apartment...

Is it not common knowledge to take bullets out of a gun when cleaning it?

so that such "accidents" do not happen?

:waitasec:

Yes! And apparently he did not have a great relationship with the neighbor who's apartment was above that the bullet shot through :/

The Washington Post says the shooter (Aaron Alexis) may have used the stolen ID of a US Navy petty officer named Rollie Chance to gain access to the base.

Why, if he was a DOD contractor with his own ID, use the stolen ID of someone else? Also why target the Navy?

Police are also looking to question a Black man suspect in his 40s wearing olive drab clothing. The White guy suspect in his 30s wearing khaki clothing has been cleared.

My husband just told me there was another shooting. It's a horrible world when the first thought was " not kids again". Prayers for the victims and the families. When are these shootings going to stop.

Is the guy the only gunman now? Has this been confirmed?

Police investigate ID used to enter Navy Yard

Police are investigating whether the identification of former Navy petty officer Rollie Chance was used by Alexis to enter the Navy Yard compound. Federal investigators visited Chance’s home today.

A relative of Rollie Chance said in a telephone interview that Chance, from Stafford, Va., was not at the Navy Yard and was neither a witness nor a suspect and asked the media to leave the family alone.

[Updated at 3:55 p.m. ET] The dead suspect was Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old military contractor from Texas, the Washington FBI field office told CNN’s Pamela Brown.

Alexis was identified through fingerprints and an identification card that was on the suspect's body, the FBI field office said.

[Updated at 4:09 p.m. ET] We'll have more information about the dead suspect, Aaron Alexis, shortly. Right now, here are some details about the three wounded people who were taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, according to the hospital's chief operating officer, Janis Orlowski:

i would imagine it will end up that he had been fired/laid off and that his own ID would no longer get him in.

oh....and he was cooking while he was cleaning his gun, so his hands were greasy. :notgood:

I always clean my gun while I'm cooking.

not yet, but i would say it seems overwhelmingly likely.

one of the 2 other individuals they wanted to identify has been identified and was not involved.

I always clean my gun while I'm cooking.

i have always wondered what percentage of "i was cleaning and it went off" excuses are lies.

probably the vast majority, and even the cases where it is the truth the person should lose their permit for some amount of time.

ABC local news saying that Alexis was a waiter at his restaurant. If he lost his military contracting job, and had to make ends meet waiting tables, he may have been very angry and decided to "pay them back".

IMO and just pondering. I still think he knew the people in that office, some of them. Wasn't there an earlier report or post that he seemed to be targeting certain people?

I hope that they are able to find out a motive.
