Decorah, IA - Bald Eagle Cam: Watch the babies! #2

How are you all able to tell the difference between mom and dad? I've been looking for differences but can't seem to find any other than maybe size. But the size is irrelevant if they aren't right next to each other to compare.

From the first thread:
(http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles#...medium=3064708 at the bottom there's a FAQ)
Which is the male and which is the female?
It is hard to tell the difference unless they are both on the nest. The female is larger than the male. This female has a ridge above her eyes that goes further back than on the male, and her eyes are surrounded by a greyish shadow; the male has a line around his eyes that makes them look “beadier.” Some think that the male’s head is “sleeker” than the female’s.

The bolded part is what I look at.

I finally saw a horse

don't know why the camera is focusing on barn windows?

maybe one of the eagles is over there hunting?

If you look on Youtube they have a short video, taken at ground level, showing the nest from below. It is rather close to the house. They also show video of egg hatching. Just search for Decorah Eagles. :)

Thanks much, LaWanda. I have no idea why I hadn't read that before. Now I want them together for a few minutes so I can compare and figure out which one is which! It looks like maybe mom is there now but I haven't looked at the other one yet after learning the stuff from that link.

Where's Sassy?

eta: never mind, I see all three now. :)

he was standing on #3, lol

My husband just called me all worried and said he only saw 2 babies. We are officially addicted. :giggle:

Of course Sassy would be standing on Finally.

Here is a good tutorial on our eagles... helped me learn how to tell mama and dad apart.

Me too. There is a noticeable difference in the grey around her eyes.

For being less the 24 hours old, lil Finally is pretty spunky!! He/She got right in their at the end of that feeding.

Does anyone know what dinner dad just brought? That thing is huge!

I'm glad that they have a calm night. Felt sorry for them when it was blustery. After watching the tutorial on mum and dad, I can definitely see the difference. Thanks for that.

When there are no eggs or chicks in the nest, I wonder if both eagles sleep in the nest together at night. Seems that during cold weather they would want the others body heat. I just looked at Mom with her head buried and can tell the wind is blowing.

Chasing Halos, thank you SO much for posting that tutorial on how to tell them apart! That was a big help!!

Looks like it was raining because now I can't see much as there is rain on the lens. I hope that goes away soon!

I was just going to ask about this. I've never watched them late at night or early-early morning, so I don't know if they sleep together or not. If not, where does the other one sleep?

they do not sleep together the other roosts nearby

Bob needs to climb the tree and wipe off the raindrops from the cam!!!

Who does the panning, tilting, and zooming, and when does that happen?
Bob Anderson, Executive Director of RRP, switches to the PTZ cam when time and weather permit,
