I think this young man is in serious trouble, the authorities are going to be looking to blame something other than the rough seas and hedonistic atmosphere they created so families keep coming and spending their money.
No chance that US Spring Break tourists arrive in the Dominican Republic with hedonistic attitudes that are entirely home grown?

My guess is that Dominican culture is not orgy based and that not all Dominicans support the no limits hedonism that some Americans engage in while visiting their country. Rather, as a society, and as a government, they tolerate it in select venues because it brings in needed dollars.

Getting on a soapbox, the following accusations made in this thread amaze me:

- Dominicans seduce well scrubbed, wholesome Americans with the lure of no limits hedonism on Dominican beaches.

- Dominicans failed to go room to room informing innocent Americans what Red Flags on beaches mean.

- Dominicans failed to have sufficient guards on beaches to protect drunken Americans from themselves.

- Corrupt Dominicans failed to let an obviously innocent American fly off into the rising sun. Instead..... they dared subject him to a legal process and a police investigation.

Getting off my soap box.......

It might be an in exact translation of another concept.
Strangely, I also found it in a document from the French government (maladresse). The second link is a glossary of French legal terms, in which maladresse is defined as "ineptitude." It seems to me to be more a lack of ordinary care rather than clumsiness IMO.

The point of my post was not to impugn the entire culture of the DR, if that even needs to be clarified. Nor do I think I implied they lure innocent Americans there and convert them.

The DR does more than tolerate tourism, they actively promote and market it all over the world, including to spring breakers. For families the pitch is very different than for young adults and both are very important to the economy of the DR. Of course people come for what appealed to them so yes whatever that was is homegrown; safety and fun for families and safety and hedonism for spring breakers. Part of the appeal to both groups is that the DR is a safe place, which is true so long as you exercise good judgement. I have been to the DR many times and it a very safe place to travel to with your children, I highly recommend it.

The DR is also entitled to apply their laws, do an investigation, and detain and prevent suspects and witnesses from leaving until they are satisfied. People on this board are entitled to disagree when the threshold has been met and that does not make them provincial in any way.

Back to the point I tried to make... Applying the law allows some discretion. Where the cause is ambiguous and perhaps unknowable, and let's face it, we will never know what happened to this girl, a prosecutor can exercise judgement and discretion to charge or not to charge. The extent of my original post was that this young man may get less of a benefit of any doubt if that benefit makes the beaches or resorts appear less safe.

As a side note, I think the idea of "lacking ordinary care" being a criminal offense in France fits with what little I know about Napoleonic Code concepts.

The Napoleonic code seems to have the concept that one has the responsibility to contribute to a stable society, maybe by taking ordinary care. So..... if your ineptitide gets somebody hurt, its criminal?

For example, a Navy Shore Patrol Senior Petty Officer explained to me that he had to take creature comforts and do health and welfare checks on a Marine imprisoned in Tijuana. His offense was:

- Goes to a, well, illegal, but tolerated brothel. - Gets into a fight with a local. - Marine leaves.
- Mexican police come, local tries to stab one of the police. They shoot and kill the local.

The Mexican police then track down the Marine. He is put in jail for two years under the idea of:

- You needed to contribute to society by conducting yourself better (eptitude?) If you had not gotten into a fight, we would not of been called. The local would not of tried to stab one of us. We would not have need to shoot him- in this case, fatally. So, you are going to jail even though you were not even there.

With that logic, take it back further...the taxi driver drove him there, the bartender served them, his mom birthed him...how many layers back do we go?

And spring break in the U.S. has a long history of problematic behavior. MTV aired it live starting in the mid 1980s.

did he even have Suki's phone number or room number? did he even remember her last name? I don't know if he had a super bad sunburn got totally drunk and nearly died..I'm thinking he's just recovering..thinking he will sleep some more and find her at the club later in the day or evening..

I don't know but still I want to know the currents specifically for the timeframe. and if something did come in, which way would it have pushed her in the water? was she wearing jewelry? would the tiger sharks totally zero in on her and drag her somewhere or devour her? how long would it take them to do this? are there dive teams accessing the reef?

they need to focus on retrieving her...and following up on leads because supposedly there have been some leads called in. could be nothing , could be something.

on this supposedly quiet night on the water ( even though the day was bad)...supposedly quiet...so how was it later on? in the early morning before they started to search? could later riptides and currents have pulled her further out?

I'm sad about this story, mOO
He didn’t even know her first name correctly. He referred to her as ‘Sadicka’ in the interrogation notes.

If I was a DR investigator, I might explore why JR & SK were captured on barroom video throwing up at almost the same time.

Start by asking their friends and/or other patrons if J & S had ordered the same drink.

If the answer is an unqualified "YES" who knows where that could lead. Who is covering up what and/or protecting the resort from 'contributory' accusations?

JMHO fueled by discussions on Nancy Grace's show yesterday.

Would you please link the video that shows them both vomiting? I see people discussing it but no one has linked the video. It without a link its only a rumor.

Man seen with missing Pittsburgh student trying to obtain new passport, lawyers say

Joshua Riibe, the 22-year-old Minnesota college student who was with University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki the night she went missing on a spring break trip to the Dominican Republic, is trying to get a new passport to return back to the United States, according to his lawyers.

Riibe’s legal team confirmed to ABC News they are trying to get a new U.S. passport for Riibe from the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic.

“The U.S. Embassy is in communication with Mr. Riibe, his family, and his lawyer and is providing all appropriate consular assistance,” the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic told ABC News.

It exists up-thread. Again the vid is super grainy. (????) If they were throwing up it could have had something to do with what they ate.

Hi Trebor, it's not a rumor. There are many links upthread. So many have discussed it extensively. 😔

This might be dumb but are there possibly any satellite/google earth-type images that might be obtained from that early morning when the disappearance transpired?

After all the many theories that have come out, and with the information we now have, I feel the most likely thing that happened was that JR either:

-Truly thought SK had just left when he woke up and thought nothing of it.
OR
-Was able to save himself from that large wave but not SK and after he woke up did not report it but should have.

And my initial reaction to the "saving" her part of his story is that it doesn't sound right and didn't happen that way.

I think we can never know though. I hope she is found.
Prayers to her family, so tragic.
