Ellen Degeneres under fire for giving away dog

 • #261
The rescue group emailed Ellen and Portia for a follow up. They called the rescue and said we've been meaning to call you, but this is what and why we did this. After being promised that the new family could submit and application online, which they immediately did. The group said they wanted to do a home check. That's how Mutts and Moms got the address. When they arrived the two dogs were playing. There was no issue with the dogs getting along. The rescue group had no intention of doing a home check. They immediately took the collar and tags off the dog and said, we are taking the dog back.

Is there a link or citation for the source on this. I've heard two different things. There's a note above that states they were offered an application and refused to file it. I'm not doubting you. I just see a conflict in information.

The story is still available from link on the homepage. At least it is at this moment! Guess they change the page pretty quickly.

I still don't see anything but links to Access Hollywood articles. I didn't see it on the State of California home page either.

I'm still very wary of anything the Hollywood media writes. That is an entertainment show and there is an awful lot of bias in those type articles and usually some errors, sometimes gross errors.

I am just throwing this out there.....
Why did the hairdresser give her the dog back?

I would not have.. She would need to take me to court.
The hairdresser signed no contract with this loony tune. I would simply have told her to get the hell off of my property.

If I remember correctly, this witch even had the police with her when she went to retrieve the dog. You can fight and end up in jail or you can give the dog over and take care of your kids... I don't think the Mom had a choice...

The tricky part .... did the cops have a warrant??

HOLY CRAP!!! Did you all read that contract?? That is the most insane, insulting, most messed up piece of trash I have ever read. ....

I'd like to see a copy of the contract Portia and/or Ellen actually signed. We really don't know if that is the same type contract used for Iggy. While I agree the blank contract sounds silly and unreasonable in some places, Ellen and/or Portia shouldn't have chosen to do business with her and they shouldn't have signed a contract they didn't agree with. To me, it's 50-50: anyone offering a contract like that isn't being reasonable and anyone who would sign a contract with the clauses you quoted isn't reasonable either. By the way, the items you list were "optional." It said they were valid only if "checked."

Access Hollywood is in the entertainment business. Hollywood and television stars thrive on publicity and there is a saying, "There is no such thing as bad publicity." These people love having their faces in the limelight. After hearing the recording of Ellen's PR person talking to the rescue lady, if that is a legitimate recording, I think Ellen also needs a new PR person. There are two sides to this story and this is the second time, according to Access Hollywood, that Ellen has adopted a dog then given it away shortly thereafter.

OH-- and another one (from the contract)!!:

"dog must NOT be allowed to run free at any time...." Yeah, well, isn't that what leash-free dog parks are for.......????????

It amazes me that anyone in their right mind would sign such a contract.

Did you really mean to say that. :)

LOL reb...I first misread about the following requirements!! I thought those WERE her requirements...and by the time I got to #4 I thought WTH, let me go back read this again!!

Yes..her application is BS and I've never filled one out like that that had those restrictions. How does a rescue ban a dog being adopted to homes with kids??? Some great dogs will miss out on some great families with kids. No other pets...I couldn't live without 2 Danes. They keep each other so entertained. No head out the window? My dogs would never go for a ride again if I didn't let them do that!!! That rescue is looney for sure!!!

Please re-read the contract. Most of the things everyone is flipping out about were optional and not in force unless checked. How many, if any, were checked on the Ellen-Portia contract?

I'm Ellen Cancels Tapings; Could Agency Suspension Affect Iggy Situation?
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (October 18, 2007) — As the controversy over Ellen’s dog adoption gone awry continues, Access Hollywood has learned that Mutts & Moms may have other business issues to contend with that could affect their position in the Iggy dispute.

According to the California Secretary of State’s Web site, the Mutts & Moms corporation has been suspended since December 2006 when they failed to file a “statement of information.”

Access Hollywood has verified the corporation is still suspended as of today.

The “statement of information” is a document that lists who their officers are. However, as soon as the form is submitted, the agency can revive their corporation.
As a result of the suspension, enforcing the contract with Ellen and Portia may be impossible for the agency, as both the original adoption of Iggy and the date the agency reclaimed possession of the pet happened after the suspension began.

Access Hollywood has placed a call to Mutts & Moms, as well as their attorney, for comment. No response was received at the time of publication.

Lol, if you want a smoking gun, then by all means go looking for it.

I am so way past the contract thing here. To me the contract is NOT the point. The point is how these agencies (not including the good ones here) operate, and they sometimes operate illegally and fraudulently represent their true intentions. They are scam artist and bully's. They prey on a persons heart and good intentions. This agency happened to pick on someone who has the ability and the money to fight back. How many people don't have the resources to do that? The public needs to be made aware of agencies like Mutts and Moms aka Rentadog.

Sounds to me like Ellen has issues with living up to promises, both written and implied. I bet a lot of tired people would like to just call in sick and not show up for work.

I would think many of those people who waited a long time to attend her show and maybe traveled a great distance are very disappointed that she didn't feel like doing her job that day.

LOL - Thank you for giving permission and for moderating this board. I'm sure it is a hard and thankless job, much like animal rescue.

The way I understood it, it was the hairdresser who called the police after this woman showed up trying to take the dog away. I'm sure she thought the police would be able to stop her from doing it but the microchip was checked and because it still had this dog sellers info the police had to let her leave with it. I call her a dog seller because I don't think she is involved at all with dog rescue, it's a business to her and she was not interested in the dogs well being or she would have done what was in the dogs best interest.

I agree!! Way too much is being made of this whole situation. I'm sure the rescue organization wants to protect the dogs they place from ending up homeless once again. If a dog doesn't like children, the rescue folks check that box to protect both dogs and children. The contract is probably written in a way that covers all potential situations. If you don't want to do business with them, DON'T SIGN THE CONTRACT. That's pretty simple. But once it's signed, it should be honored.

Suzi's not a mod. :)

I'd be interested in knowing whether M&M collected an additional fee from adopting family #2.

Yeah, sometimes it is a thankless job.

Not according to the videos, or the owners. The owners called the police after she picked up the dog and said she was taking it. In the video at least, the Moms & Mutts rep was holding the dog and walking with it away from the rest of the group. The dog did not appear to be trying to get away or in distress at any time. The police came and checked the chip, which had the rescue person's name on it, which indicated she was still the owner, so she was allowed to leave with HER (legally) dog.

They didn't need one. The owners called the police and let them on their property.

Also, there are so many special needs dogs that do require special handling that most rescue groups use a contract that is easily modified, one that can be easily modified by check-marking those special requirements.

In my opinion, I see a lot more sqawking and ranting coming from Ellen and her publicity machine than what I see coming from the lady running the rescue. It can't be much fun to be spanked in public for not honoring a contract.
