Emergency meeting called at Buckingham Palace in London

I don't really see that the palace would have to call staff to a meeting the day of the death of a major royal? They'd want them there for the funeral, I expect, but surely they could arrive in dribs and drabs and have meetings during the week prior to the funeral?

Regarding earlier comments , the wife of a King is a Queen, but the queens don't get regnal numbers if they are not monarchs in their own right. So Queen Elizabeth I was queen outright, but Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (the latter words only added after her husband's death) who was mother of our current queen did not have the regnal number II, that went to Queen Elizabeth II who was Queen outright. The rank of King outranks the rank of Queen, therefore Philip was made a Duke and Prince, not a King.

Camilla, therefore, could be Queen Camilla on the ascension of Charles to the throne. However, when Charles and Camilla married there was an agreement that Camilla would not be known as Queen Camilla (I think this was mostly out of a sense that the country wouldn't accept this due to the love for Diana).

The BBC haven't made an announcement, but they do now have a small piece up to say that there is a meeting and it has nothing to do with the health of either the Queen or Prince Philip.

I could be a queen if I chose to !!

I am not being rude

When I woke up went to SKY new and my first thought was who cares.

Why on earth , in this day and age (terror cyber murder) did it need to be handled this way.

I do not understand?

Can someone connect this in terms of protocol for something like this

I am glad I chose to crash

<modsnip>

I thought maybe the staff got chastised for letting their crabgrass germinate.

When I first woke up, turn the tv to cnn..saw nothing about this..could not believe Trump "trumped" the Royal family (sorry, could not help myself), because I was sure someone had died when I went to bed..came here...and first thought "you're kidding me". If this is a rehearsal, I hope they only have one because like the boy who cried wolf, no-one will take much notice again. And I don't mean any disrespect to the royal family or our British members, but they are 91 and 96 and "good health" at that age can mean they are awake and alert and up moving.

Considering Philip has always been known to be her rock, her constant companion, the man whose support that she could rely on above all others...why would he now step away from her and leave her to forge ahead on her own? No, I think the plan is for the queen to step down [abdicate in favor of Charles]...or...Philip knows the only way the Queen will agree to step down is if HE makes this move. After all these years I simply cannot imagine him leaving her side willingly to have her continue on alone. Before the year is out there may be a King.

"His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year. In taking this decision, the duke has the full support of the queen," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Philip, 95, has maintained an active schedule. As recently as Wednesday, he appeared in public at a London cricket club.

The household staff needs a raise.

You're not kidding the servants get slave wages especially considering accommodation is expensive in London.

Enjoy your retirement Prince Philip thank you for your service!

I was already :offtobed: when you folks heard the news from Buckingham Palace. When DH's alarm went off just before 6:00 this morning, we both heard the teaser about Prince Philip and thought he might have passed away. Eventually reported on CBS news that Queen Elizabeth's husband was retiring from official royal duties. Maybe QEII will step down, too, and let someone younger (William) ascend the throne.

I still don't get it ! he is close a century old

People near a century old retire

how it works no matter who u are!

Geez, 95! God bless him.

How old is Queen Elizabeth? Would they pass King down to Charles or bypass Charles and pass down to William?

I, too, wish that she would have William take over as King. I know that Charles is next in line however it would be more beneficial for England's tourism because William and his lovely family are so popular.

When Charles took Camilla as his mistress it hurt his sons immeasurably and was so distasteful. Not a good trait for a Monarch.

I can't imagine the disappointment of the people there if Charles takes over even though they know he is next in line and expects this to happen.

Anything on the Internet concerning Charles is hardly looked at. But when there is anything about Will, Kate or their children then thousands view it, including me.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 91st birthday on April 21 (1926). I'm not certain about the line of succession, but I believe the Queen can decide to pass the scepter to William instead of Charles. I wouldn't be happy with a Queen Camilla, and I doubt many Brits would, either. Even though Camilla would have no power, she would still be known as Queen. :moo:

I'm gonna sound so cold and I'm not, I just don't really care too much for the Royal family....

I honestly don't care... If Charles was to become King, Camilla would not be called Queen anyway
