If the family was involved, I imagine the purpose of the ransom note was throw the police off and buy time. Police would assume she was taken from the house, unlike a typical missing child case where you'd immediately search all areas of the house.

Calling the cops would've been a way to portray themselves as innocent, because innocent parents would call the cops right away.

Why then, did John do the search and find the body while the police were still there? I imagine he would've avoided that room until the police were gone, then figured out what to do. He opened the door to that room, right? Not the friend who was searching with him?

Unless they expected the police to find the body, hence going to the trouble to stage the scene.

But then, why the ransom note? Ughh. To sow confusion? Muddy the waters?

Some more thoughts:

If it was an intruder seeking ransom, surely the ransom note would be more organized. Pre-typed, not in their own handwriting. It seems the intent was never about ransom, because JBR was never taken. Perhaps the perp wrote the note to confuse/stall the investigation.

IF it was about ransom, perhaps the perp ran out of time to get her out of the house or got spooked for some reason. The only part that fits about the ransom theory is that JR would be a likely target for ransom.

Who ever it was that killed sweet little jonbenet ,wanted John Ramey`s christmas bonus money.$118,000.00 John Ramey went to the bank that morning to get that money, why didn't the suspects never called ? because
the suspects killed her and could nt return her alive? why did the suspects killed her ? I am guessing jonbene was screaming to much and they shut her up ?

The ransom letter

that morning You will withdraw $118,000.00 from your account. $100,000 will be in $100 bills and the remaining $18,000 in $20 bills. Make sure that you bring an adequate size attache to the bank. When you get home you will put the money in a brown paper bag. I will call you between 8 and 10 am tomorrow to instruct you on delivery. The delivery will be exhausting so I advise you to be rested. If we monitor you getting the money early, we might call you early to arrange an earlier delivery of the money and hence a earlier pick-up of your daughter

I can’t believe there is still people that genuinely believe the family did it. Do you really think the mom or dad would choke out their kid with a rope and sexually assault her with a paintbrush?
I think that hasn't been emphasized enough. Maybe people are too nice to want to dwell on it. This bore the signs an extremely violent, sexual, sadistic torture killing. Not just oops, a little bang on the head, by a family member or intruder.

ETA: "JonBenet Ramsey was the apparent victim of a forceful sexual attack in the minutes before she was strangled to death - an attack that left her body scraped and bruised" Jon Benet Ramsey Investigation: The Denver Post Online

I haven't seen the letter for some time now, maybe 15 years ago. But what you posted sounds like a 15- 17 year old wrote that. Not an educated man or woman. Is there a link to the note?

For an intruder to have written it, they would have had to either write it whilst hiding (presumably in darkness) and waiting for the family to return, or after committing the crime (in darkness) - at which point their priority would have been to get the heck out of there. Why take a while writing a note, to buy themselves time? That makes zero sense.
I don't know all the evidence about lights seen on in the home, but it was 5000 sq feet, the Ramsey bedroom was up on the 3rd floor and there were apparently multiple passages and hallways, so that the way down from the Ramsey bedroom was not via a main hallway.

I'm intrigued that they'd hosted an open house. I just wonder whether someone had been in and out of the home a few times during that busy Christmas week and become comfortable there, especially in the basement.

ETA Besides, any intruder theory would have to recognize the intruder knew the layout of the house, to find JBRs bedroom, plus the most hidden room in the basement.

It was said JonBenét was hit in the head with a large flashlight, that they used to get around and wrote the letter?

thank you, now that I have read it, it sounds even more like a young person, kid, wrote this note. He also sounds like there is a "problem" of sorts mentally. He actually tells Joh how to take care of himself and lets him know he needs a big enough case to the bank and a use a paper bag for delivery. I think this kid was in the house for sometime, and he wrote that note, waited in the basement for them to go to sleep and went up and got her, and did the rest. I will think about it some, but it sounds so unlike an adult to write this. Jon was educated, so was Patsy, this is not a note they wrote. JMO

Nothing in the ransom note can be taken too seriously. It's clearly meant as a diversion and that shows a functioning mind. If the writer seems crazy, then it's to play a character.

I think the author is female and has an over the top dramatic streak. It was meant as a diversion to point away from the family.

I always thought that something to do with JonBenet's beauty pageant participation motivated this crime. I remember one FBI expert commenting on this case. He said someone like JonBenet would be a pedophile's dream come true because she was a six-year-old beauty queen. Sometimes I wondered if there was a lot of jealousy toward the family because of JonBenet's success in the beauty pageants. I felt like the murderer would not be a family member but someone who attended the pageants. Then that brings in the $118,000 ransom request. Someone somehow knew of this bonus amount Mr Ramsey received and interjected it into the fake ransom note. From this perspective, the top perspective would be someone who knew of the bonus and who attended the beauty pageants.

Well, the handwriting analysis concluded that Mr. Ramsey did not write it and that there is a low chance that Patsy Ramsey did write it. I don't think family members can't have done this but I feel like it is one of the fringe possibilities.

I think the whole pageant thing is overblown. pedophiles are pedophiles.
IMO There’s nothing sexually provocative about a child playing dress up and wearing make up. Anyone inappropriately stimulated, was a pedophile to begin with.

I agree. I think the Ramsey's are innocent.
Why would John participate in all the investigations all these years if he was guilty or knew who was? That alone makes no sense to me.

I took a course called "Introduction to Forensic Science" from Coursera during the pandemic (the screenshot is from that course). The professor who taught the course was very knowledgeable. His name was Roderick Bates. He used the JonBenet Ramsey case as a case study in the course. One major point he made was that the police took ages to secure the crime scene. He also went through the entire ransom note, but I didn't find his analysis there too important. He felt the ransom note was a divergence from the fact that the body was in the house. But his opinion was that the Boulder police made major mistakes at the start.
Imo so much seemed like all but the kitchen sink all around
