People who do these shootings are angry and anger is a secondary emotion. I am guessing in this instance, it is hurt and pain that is the primary emotion, so what can we do to help these people before they escalate to harming others? We can offer phychiatric care, but they have to want the help. Would more education for parents on warning signs in their children help? I really do not know but I sure wish I did.

I think we need stuff public service messages like tobacco seat belts if were not gonna have the money for mental stuff

to educate actually the young people who live on social media

as we are finding today, again , a lot of these folks do very similar stuff online

IMO that one student who called cops earlier probably helped a lot in getting them to where he might be

Obviously he was known to be dangerous, by social media knives etc

I think his group therapy comment indicates he probably had a long history with mental health contacts moo

When shooting at a target, you want to try to hit the same area. That is called 'grouping'.

I hope that we can stop posting and reposting pics of the shooter and can soon post pics of the victims and then we can get angry and move forward with the discussion that can't be had here.

Believe it or not, but mass school shootings really aren’t on the rise. (they are however more deadly) They are just a disgusting part of american culture, and its been that way since the country was founded. A culture that has also glorified guns and allowed the country to be flooded with them. The fact that guns have become more powerful and more deadly is reflected by the increase in deaths.

MSNBC just showed the shooter being driven to the booking center via police car; when they arrived, he got out of the police car wearing a hospital gown, and walked into the booking center. Will post a lonk when I see one available

I just heard the same thing, Wolf Blitzer said it on CNN. Don't have a link, it was TV.

Confirmed former student

They don't go to alternative placement without some serious issues

feeling more bully retaliation --very troubled youth portrait is kinda emerging

moo

wide aerial what a mess

they sure had a lot of info on him very fast might be somewhat telling moo

Not all Alternative Schools/Alternative Students have serious issues. All school districts in my state must have an Alternative program, but it is up to each individual district as to how they want to set it up. Some schools set their programs up for students who are behind academically and need more one-on-one instruction or more project based instruction, etc.

Some alternative programs are for troubled students, but not all are. I I agree that the shooter is definitely troubled!

Public schools need better security. :(

Whatever happened to the push to have metal detectors and school IDs necessary to enter. I think some inner city schools already have metal detectors. Maybe its about time all schools have them. Its a one time cost and then it should stop some of these shootings I would think.

I started the thread because it's Breaking News that has been featured continuously on major news stations for the past 3.5 hours

We need a discussion thread. I was just expressing my disgust that this keeps happening and all anyone ever does is send thoughts and prayers.

As I’ve said before, if Sandy Hook didn’t change things, nothing will.

I agree - it's a preventative measure that maybe sadly must be taken... but absolutely not a solution.

Just terrific this our second one today -- it pathetiic

never seen that before they are having them put their back packs in a pile

maybe they could back to our day carrying your books or these day laptops

think how much that might help

no backpacks peroid kinda simple

white male maroon shirt a lot of blood inside cnn

20 number flowing around

school board just confirm multiple injuries

shotter pulled alarm

one dead confirmed cnn

lots of numbers are now starting to line up

20 1 fatiality

shooter has fled scene

quote from text "there are bodies all around" dont think they are referring to fatal tho thank goodness

Students are routinely told to put backpacks down before exiting a building to be searched later by LE. They don't know who all is involved in the shooting and who all could have a weapon in their backpack. This is routinely done during bomb threats at schools too. I work at a school, and this year during training, they told us that the students would be asked to line up their backpacks instead of a big pile to make it easier for them to search.
