And exposing their own children to a virtual stranger. But I’m hopeful they did this with the best of intentions.

They are lucky to be alive and not his first victims of that day.

The mother of the child was overheard telling flight attendants that her son has “behavioral problems,” according to passengers.

What will he be like as a teen?

You have to wonder why the pilot didn't refuse to take off with the child aboard. While the kid personally would not have been able to directly endanger the aircraft, the disruption he caused could have done so indirectly by making the other passengers irritable and frustrated.

The JROTC marksmanship program used air rifles special-made for target shooting, typically on indoor ranges at targets the size of a coin.

The more than 1,700 high school JROTC programs nationally also receive financial support from the U.S. military and are typically supervised by retired officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. The military collaborates with school systems on the training curriculum, which includes marching drills, athletic competitions and shooting teams.

I recall reading, after another violent rampage, that some gun shop owners DO deny questionable people the right to buy a gun. A gun shop owner said sometimes you just know that the person in front of you should not own a gun.

If it was me, I'd follow my gut.

Did anyone catch the info upthread that LE/DCF once investigated the mother for abusing the boys? Physical abuse,
I guess. Wonder how that happened and who called in that complaint??

No, I missed that! Was it self-defense? Or is this case much darker than we know?

I wonder if NC stayed in the ROTC program the whole time he was a student at MKD High School. This group is
highly structured with rules and discipline. These boys are sort of preparing to go into the real military after graduation.
My own son was in Civil Air Patrol in HS and had to wear a uniform, very short haircut, etc. and were looked upon
as sort of straight laced students. Doesn't seem like NC would have fit in very well with his demeanor.

Not all gun safes have keys.

True, Gardenista. But in this particular instance, the family specifically mentioned a “key” so this was not a fingerprint-sensor type of gun safe.

Every type of keyed safe always comes with two keys. Always and with reason.

It was in the great overview article by Sun Sentinel, neighbor Mr. Gold was quoted I believe. Couple pages back.

Sorry, but the Chicago Tribune article is accurate and the information is at your link.

The school's JROTC program did have a marksmanship training program

NC was a member of and participated in that marksmanship training program

The school's JROTC program did receive a $10,000 grant from the NRA in support of that marksmanship training program

Those are the facts.

The Tribune article is from the AP. And according to people who were there, the non-cash grant saved lives.

Those are the facts.

FYI, young women are also in the ROTC on school campuses.

My gun safe has a combination lock, but my only point is we can't say for a fact he was aware there are always 2 keys.

If he is deemed mentally ill and released he will have access to that money still.

....but at least now he has that access while imprisoned or on death row.....

Nikolas Cruz, 19, was wearing a maroon shirt with the logo from the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when he was arrested Wednesday shortly after the shooting. Former JROTC cadets told The Associated Press that Cruz was a member of the small varsity marksmanship team that trained together after class and traveled to other area schools to compete........

Records show that the Stoneman Douglas JROTC program received $10,827 in non-cash assistance from the NRA's fundraising and charitable arm in 2016, when Cruz was on the squad. The school's program publicly thanked the NRA Foundation on its Twitter feed.

A spokeswoman for the NRA declined to comment on Friday. The top officers of the foundation are all current or former executives of the NRA.

Right. He may not have been aware of it but most people who have ever had a locking filing cabinet, safe, safety deposit box, locked desk, rented apartment, etc. knows there are always two keys. There is always a spare key at the time of inception or purchase.

If the article above in Sun Sentinel is accurate, NC's mother tried to give both boys away to her neighbor's sister who
lived up north. NC was only 6 yrs. old. So younger 1/2 brother was 4 or so. Her husband had just died.
Don't flame me but this is just my thoughts:

I would gather from that fact, that the parents had never really bonded with these boys. Who would even discuss
giving away your children.?? Could it be that Mrs. Cruz was not a bona fide "loving" parent in the sense that she
had any emotional attachment to the boys? I find that hard to reconcile. Yes, they provided a roof over their heads and
food and clothing, but maybe not real emotional bonds.
I've seen this in other families, where parents considered their child a Pain In A$$ and child grew up unloved and
treated like an annoying problem instead of a valued member of the family. Consequently these children did not
develop healthy self-esteem or self worth. They were rejected souls. Unwanted. Problems. Nothing but trouble.
They grew up as rogues. Not well adjusted in their adult lives. Trouble with the law and fellow humans.
I just wonder if this is part of problems w/ Cruz boys.
It could very well be that the boys already had such severe behavioral issues that she didn't think she could raise them as a single mother.

Yes, that's the same training program that NC participated in. His school also received a grant from the NRA to help fund it.

These gun marksmanship training programs need some serious review. They're apparently not screening people properly before accepting them. Not sure taxpayers need to fund this anyhow, especially for high school students. Let JROTC do other instruction and education, drilling, etc. but no target shooting/training.

It is actually the other way around. He could not bond with anyone or anything

Agree, you'd think he would know. I did just read an article on Fox which said they had both keys and think he must have made a copy, but I didn't post it because they didn't source that info.
