If by the right thing you mean allowing him to keep his guns, including assault weapons, then I guess they did.

From the linked article, http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/b...amily-helped-nikolas-cruz-20180217-story.html

They made Cruz buy a locking gun safe to put in his room the day he moved in. Cruz had a handful of guns, including the AR-15 and two other rifles that Snead said would be considered assault rifles. Cruz, a hunter, also had knives, BB guns and pellet guns.

Snead thought he had the only key to the cabinet but has figured out Cruz must have kept a key for himself. The family kept their own rifles, bought after a burglary a couple of years ago, in a separate locked cabinet.

They told Cruz he needed to ask permission to take out the guns. He had asked only twice since November. They said “yes” once and “no” once.

Yes, they let him keep the guns in his own room in a safe. NC is the one who bought the safe. Not sure what they expected to accomplish by doing that. Father now says he thought he had the only key (which is not exactly the same thing family lawyer was saying earlier). But regardless, if NC was the one who bought the safe, it would be reasonable to assume that NC had kept the key.

And remember this family lawyered up immediately after shooting. they have been told what and how to discuss.
I would take this family's word with a huge grain of salt. I still believe there was some financial incentive for these
outside people to take in these boys. They were obviously collecting a monthly stipend to have them in their home.

They also say they knew almost nothing about his issues. Which, if true, means they let someone they knew almost nothing about to move into their house with a bunch of assault weapons.

Sounds like his mom was lacking a support system herself:

“'He was ostracized his whole life,' said Gold, who said he was one of only four people, including Nikolas, and his younger brother, Zachary, who attended the funeral of his mother, Lynda Cruz, in November."

(From the link above)

:(

jmo

This breaks my heart.

I think we should consider that her presence in his life may be what kept this event from happening any sooner than it did.

Also, I highly recommend people watch the movie "We Need To Talk About Kevin." It was on Netflix, not sure if it still is or not. It's slow and kind of boring for a lot of it, but leaves you thinking about it afterwards.

And exposing their own children to a virtual stranger. But I’m hopeful they did this with the best of intentions.

Like I said above, I'm sure the Snead's were scared witless about being legally responsible for Cruz, if they were.
When I heard their atty. the day after murders, I first thought of damage control for this family. And rightfully so.
I'd be scared to death I would get blamed. Huge lapse in good judgement on their part for allowing the numerous
guns and knives to be brought into their home. MOO.

Very sad and odd that there wasn’t anyone who was close enough to her to be there? No friends or acquaintances from work, church, school Moms, siblings on either side, nieces or nephews? At 68 years of age there is typically some of these. Insightful that she too had no support structure to turn too.

It is possible that the profound problems and chaotic lifestyle due to the seriously deranged children forced the adoptive mother to close in and alienate herself due to fears and judgements. No one knows for sure what she went through but by the sounds of it (39 calls to LE) this placed an enormous strain on her. The outbursts and violence had to be a living hell for her to endure. NC went out of his way to attend his adoptive mother’s funeral but by accounts, he didn’t shed a tear.

And did I read on here yesterday that the involuntary commitment wouldn’t have kept him from purchasing a gun in Florida? I don’t understand that at all. I thought the one thing everyone agreed on was not allowing people with serious mental health issues access to guns.

Only answering a question as it relates to mental illness

Feb. 28, 2017, -- H.J. Res. 40, passed effectively ending the Social SecurityAdministration's requirement to enter the names of people who receive mental health benefits into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. This is the database used by the FBI to determine who is able to purchase firearms.

Yup, and since the Sneads said they keep their own guns in a locked safe, they would have known there were 2 keys.
Again, this was 'lawyer speak'.

Or Spaghetti!

Do not ask me where that came ~ from

lol! no worries. I needed a laugh. But, he had to have other interests one that allowed expressing rage, and emotions productively.

I am still concerned for the safety of the students and staff there. I did what I felt was necessary to end my son's exposure to him, as the kid is clearly escalating. My son was nervous everyday.
Of course, I wasn't given any information about what was being done to mitigate the risk of further violence due to privacy policy.
I just hope I don't see him on the news one day...

I had to do similiar when an older child of 12 was still in the third grade molesting other girls in the bathroom. The school refused to do anything so I took my daughter out of that school. Many other girls were molested and were told by the school to not talk about and to have pity for the older violent, distubed girl. They were terrorized by her. LE refused to get involved.

I agree with your insightful comments. this is what I surmised also. Who would want to visit her and tolerate her
out of control, chaotic household. People do distance themselves from others who have problem family members.

Not all gun safes have keys.

Yes.....with the Parkland case, it has been posted here that N.C. played violent video games for hours per day. All of them with the theme of kill, kill, kill.
One of the incidences where N.C.’ mom called the authorities is when she tried taking his X-Box away from him and he started throwing things & smashing up the house.
It was posted up thread.

I must be very strict because I would have taken his XBox to the thrift store and refuse to buy or allow him to have one after that violent outburst. I absolutely refuse to be bullied or terrorized!

From your link, specifically regarding juveniles not charged with a felony http://www.myflfamilies.com/service-programs/mental-health/cmh-residential-treatment this seeks to first work with the child at home through community based options, in the least restrictive setting

Separate program to restore competency in juveniles http://www.myflfamilies.com/service-programs/mental-health/juvenile-incompetent-proceed-program

The Juveniles We Serve:
Competency restoration services are provided to juveniles who have been charged with a felony prior to their 18th birthday and do not have the ability to participate in legal proceedings due to their mental illness, intellectual disability, or autism. Diagnostic categories include all major DSM mental disorder classifications that are noted as mental illness under Chapter 394 & Chapter 916, Florida Statutes, or an intellectual disability or Autism diagnosis as defined in Chapter 393, Florida Statutes.

Community Restoration Services:
Community services are provided to juveniles in their home, detention or at their school by Twin Oaks Forensic Outpatient Services (TOFOS). Case management and competency training are the focus of the program. Mental health services are not provided, but are coordinated by the juvenile's case manager. Services provided under the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) are provided by that agency’s support coordinators.

Secure Residential Services:
Juveniles determined by the court to require treatment/training in a secure residential setting are served at Apalachicola Forest Youth Camp (AFYC) located in Liberty County, Florida. AFYC is a 39 bed facility operated by Twin Oaks Juvenile Development, Inc. under contract with the Department of Children and Families. It is located on a 78 acre site located in a wilderness area. Security measures include cameras and a 14 foot high fence. The buildings are constructed as log homes. The facility consists of six 7 -8 - person cabins with individual bedrooms, an education building with six classrooms, a professional building with 24-hour nursing coverage and an administrative building.

For more details about TOFOS or AFYC, please see their website at http://www.twinoaksfl.org

How is it obvious they were collecting a monthly stipend? From who? NC is an adult.

I get it. I do. But... I also must admit, I loved playing GTA! That was a hilarious game! ( Not intended to taken seriously).

Much like the movie Pretty Women staring Julia Roberts and Richard Grere. Yup there was prostitution in that very popular comady, but oddly, I never turned a trick, nor a proved of actual prostitution from watching that movie, or playing Grand Theft Auto.

You, unlike these others are emotionally/mentally stable. That's a difference. Huge difference.
