I was just thinking about this very same thing. If I was the store owner and after looking over this kid, I strongly felt that he shouldn't have a gun, what could I do?

I doubt very much that I would have sold him a gun, but on what legal basis could I deny him making that purchase?

My thought was, hey it's my store I don't think he should have a gun and I'm not selling him one.

Reserve the right to sell?

And I would add, what services are they getting while they are there and what follow up is provided?

I know these things cost money, but so do all these funerals, trials, etc. after the fact.

It seems that a relatively small percentage of people with serious mental illness are dangerous. We have a lot of case studies now. Why can’t we determine and agree on red flags and then provide intensive support (whatever that looks like) with long term follow up to that small percentage?

Just jumping off your post, Taste of Honey. And MOO.

There isn't any such thing anymore. After all of these similar stories that has to become credible to others who were not in the
trenches.

Respectfully , the consistent theme that he ought to have gotten care indicates many are not aware that that no longer exists.

Which in some fashion explains why govt is not attempting to address it. Things they are elected to do they don't do so it makes sense that nothing is being done cause it sounds like some believe there is somewhere to put people to keep others safe.

It.does.not.exist.

The bewilderment as to why that does happen is because it cant happen. You have to have buildings and staff to do this .

It.does.not.exist.

So, as a society we need to decide if we want money to go to addressing that or keep getting shot at .

If we go one by one , in everyone actually it is similar histories

with the same questions

the answer is here

no money and being cut again

Cruz wasn’t expelled, but rather he was transferred to a school for students with behavioral issues.

Cruz escaped his misery by playing video games for eight, 12, even 15 hours a day. Gold, who owns a film and video production company, sometimes would play a game or two with them.
“It was kill, kill, kill, blow up something, and kill some more, all day,

But what’s the alternative? Kicking them out on the streets? I don’t think that would solve anything for anyone.

All the politicians who are saying this is a mental health problem and not a gun access problem should meet in emergency session to fund new mental health initiatives across the country so that people have access to resources to at least try to prevent this. Moo

I have no idea. But, I couldn't live in fear of my life everyday.

How is it obvious they were collecting a monthly stipend? From who? NC is an adult.

Upthread, there was an article which quoted the Sneads discussing NC believing the previous 'temporary' home had
stolen $2900. from his account. So from that I concluded that he did had some accessible funds or whoever was
in charge of him had funds accessible to them.

Reserve the right to sell?

I recall reading, after another violent rampage, that some gun shop owners DO deny questionable people the right to buy a gun. A gun shop owner said sometimes you just know that the person in front of you should not own a gun.

Reserve the right to sell?

If it were me and I owned the gun store—Call LE about his bizarre behavior and they would have to arrive at a gun store. In front of them, ask the kid why the need for assault weapons at such a young age. Find out where his head is in front of LE. Make LE be a witness of his behaviors during this attempted transaction. Make a report. Trust your instincts.

Don’t sell.

Sure he could always go to another gun store but I think with LE presence and reporting (& possible intervention based on how it all played out) it could’ve given N.C. pause or even more than that.

I find it sad (and maybe insightful) that no one went to her funeral, except the 2 kids and the neighbors who were asked for a ride! Who planned the funeral?

Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

NC was so unruly she may have lost all friends and support and left her isolated. Who took care of her when she got the flu?

I would imagine his brother gets half. I would imagine that his share is either used for defense until indigent or left in a trust/account for the civl suits that will be filed and won.

I hope his brother gets the PTSD help he needs. I cannot even imagine.

I don't think age of the adoptive parents had anything to do with this. All the mental conditions he reportedly had, presumably he was born that way. If younger people adopted him, I doubt it would have made a difference. Also, some reports say he claims that voices told him to do it. If that's true (and he isn't lying to go for not guilty by reason of insanity), then he developed even more serious mental issues (schizophrenia?), again, genetic predisposition which wouldn't change even if adoptive parents were 20 at the time of adoption.

However, advanced age would make it much harder to try to control his outbursts! Not sure I could even at my healhiest. Sounds like he terrorized his entire family until he killed his adoptive dad then his adoptive mother. Shocked he's brother is still alive. :(

If the article above in Sun Sentinel is accurate, NC's mother tried to give both boys away to her neighbor's sister who
lived up north. NC was only 6 yrs. old. So younger 1/2 brother was 4 or so. Her husband had just died.
Don't flame me but this is just my thoughts:

I would gather from that fact, that the parents had never really bonded with these boys. Who would even discuss
giving away your children.?? Could it be that Mrs. Cruz was not a bona fide "loving" parent in the sense that she
had any emotional attachment to the boys? I find that hard to reconcile. Yes, they provided a roof over their heads and
food and clothing, but maybe not real emotional bonds.
I've seen this in other families, where parents considered their child a Pain In A$$ and child grew up unloved and
treated like an annoying problem instead of a valued member of the family. Consequently these children did not
develop healthy self-esteem or self worth. They were rejected souls. Unwanted. Problems. Nothing but trouble.
They grew up as rogues. Not well adjusted in their adult lives. Trouble with the law and fellow humans.
I just wonder if this is part of problems w/ Cruz boys.

Or NC behavior was already so out-of-control she wanted far away. Psychopathy starts young. I witnessed it first hand and it's horrifying.

If by the right thing you mean allowing him to keep his guns, including assault weapons, then I guess they did.

While I’m pretty anti gun myself, I can see where a family who had guns and didn’t know his background would think that making him buy a safe for the guns and keeping what they thought was the only key was enough.

But this is also a woman who has been described as extremely frugal and, according to the neighbor, refused to go to the doctor when she had the flu. I’m not sure if she would spend money on estate planning.

That's a bit more than frugal that's self-neglect. Did the children have doctor appts annually?

There was a link upthread that stated N.C. stood to inherit $800,000 when he turned 22 yrs old. The story went on to say that it appeared via documents that this was confirmed. Can you imagine what that kind of money in the hands of a nefarious, evil person could do?

If he is deemed mentally ill and released he will have access to that money still.

And exposing their own children to a virtual stranger. But I’m hopeful they did this with the best of intentions.

I have a feeling that the mother hid as much as she could from the public. Seems that the stories we read about his behavior come from the outside. Reading about the 30 plus phone calls to the home i can only imagine all the times she didn’t call. Iirc she was 51? when she adopted, dad was 63? The reletive in ny that met the boys once for funeral ( probably the dad’s) said the boys had issues/problems. I watched/read about a 3 year old on a plane about a week ago, passengers said it was a trip from hell.
I can’t imagine.

The mother of the child was overheard telling flight attendants that her son has “behavioral problems,” according to passengers.

What will he be like as a teen?

This is one of the best overviews of the sad life NC was living. His mother had pretty much given up on the boys and
allowed them to roam their neighborhood causing havoc for the neighbors. NC spent many, many hours playing
video games of killing, bombs, etc. His mother was frail and in poor health. No extended family support to help.
Only 4 people attended her funeral. What a sad life.

It seems to she was in poor health, exhausted and bullied/terrorized by the oldest son NC. Not sure what she could do if no one would offer any help. Not LE/FBI. Did she try military school?

Anti-Gun News Outlets Push False Claim That Florida Shooter Was ‘Trained’ By The NRA

http://dailycaller.com/2018/02/17/nikolas-cruz-nra-training/

Sorry, but the Chicago Tribune article is accurate and the information is at your link.

The school's JROTC program did have a marksmanship training program

NC was a member of and participated in that marksmanship training program

The school's JROTC program did receive a $10,000 grant from the NRA in support of that marksmanship training program

Those are the facts.

I am not sure what going backwards is going to accomplish? He was 19, not 8. One expects someone to be able to do more at 19 than at 8.

If he could learn to shoot a gun, then doing laundry, using a microwave boiling water should have been a no-brainer. My guess he refused and forced his mom to be the maid.

From the link

Cruz thought the family friend in Lantana was stealing money from him but the Sneads suspect she was innocent and he was just a victim of common identity theft. They reported about $2,900 in fraudulent charges on his debit or credit card.

Did anyone catch the info upthread that LE/DCF once investigated the mother for abusing the boys? Physical abuse,
I guess. Wonder how that happened and who called in that complaint??
