From the article

Gold said Lynda Cruz was strict with her sons, and was not averse to striking them when they misbehaved. At least one time, DCF investigated her for possibly abusing the boys and inadequately supervising them. The case was closed. Nikolas Cruz was getting treatment at Henderson Mental Health, the DCF report said. Still, they concluded he was not enough of a threat to be hospitalized or committed to a facility

——————There are many many many studies that show the negative impacts of spanking. And no, people are not OK when they say spanking did not hurt them. It is obvious to anyone who knows people that say that they were not affected. Depression, anxiety, and many many other issues as adults.

I am going to look for some articles that identify the negative things about spanking

I‘ve never understood discipline by abuse. Just a very simple two letter word, said gently and softly, “no” starting when your sweet perfect baby is just months old. You know, when you are holding them and they reach for that necklace, earrings or your hair, just take their tiny little hands and hold gently and say “no”. They learn early the meaning of “no”. It’s just so simple to me. I just hate abuse of any kind towards humans or animals. Does anyone remember the T-shirts back in the 60’s and 70’s that had “my name is no no” printed on them? LOL all four of my kids had them. There is no excuse for abuse. I do believe spanking is abuse.

I wonder if LC did a short sale to rid herself of a house of shattered dreams as her health was also declining—a short sale as an immediate method to remove the bad memories in that home, the presumed bad condition it was in (walls punched in, furniture bashed, etc), and in some ways thinking it would rid herself of NC if she moved into a small apartment once NC turned 18?

Maybe she tried her best time and again to devote all her energies, time, Love, money to what she dreamed to be a perfect home and family just to see her dream crumble time and time again?

Maybe she gave up? Maybe she **needed** it all to be gone quickly as she had one too many last straws? It is possible that she felt all alone in her “prison” of a house with a very sick and disturbed son? Maybe she just gave up in every literal sense of the word? Cutting her losses.....
A person can't just decide to do a short sale. The mortgage holder has to agree and approve the sale. It takes a long time, destroys your credit, and after the short sale you still owe the bank the difference between the mortgage amount and the sales proceeds. Sometimes the bank will forgive that outstanding balance, and in that case the amount the bank forgives is considered income and you have to pay tax on it. (There are a couple of states that are nonrecourse, meaning you don't owe the bank the difference after a short sale; Florida is not one of them).

I just can't see how there's any money here.

Roger Cruz, who worked in advertising and sales, died in August 2004 of heart failure at age 67. The following year, Lynda Cruz valued his estate as worth more than $1 million, according to probate records.
https://www.google.com/amp/amp.miamiherald.com/news/local/crime/article201203404.html

Did RC's children from his first marriage share in that inheritance? How many ways was the money split? Lynda didn't work, so she was presumably living off of her share of RC's estate, and yet she had to repeatedly refinance the house.

I think whatever money there once was has long since been spent. I think NC was exaggerating, at a minimum, and the Sneads and Deschamps are seeing dollar signs.

If there is a trust out there, someone was administering it. There would be tax returns, financial reports, other records like the trust document itself, and the attorney who drafted it would certainly have a copy. The information wouldn't be as nebulous as it is.

It will be interesting to see what the court investigation finds.

My best friend was adopted when she was a few months old, and unfortunately was a “crack baby”. She had to go throyfh withdrawals in the hospital as an infant. This was obviously told to her parents - I refuse to refer to them as her “adoptive parents- they are her parents. Sorry but I’ve seen Lynda referred to as “adoptive mom” far too many times on this thread and it drives me nuts. Anyway, my best friend knows her mom was a druggie for that reason. Her parents never, ever, badmouthed her biological mom. So NC could be aware his biological mom was a drug addict without his parents badmouthing her. JMO and just giving another perspective.

I used adoptive mother so not to confuse biological birth mother.
Unless, we lived in that house we'll never know.
My friend's mother was well respected member of her community but was also an alcoholic, sexually, emotionally abusive to her adoptive children.
This is not a statement about all adoptive parents but some are abusive.

Sorry I'm just getting back here! I saw some people answer. You know.... for some weird reason, there is a big connection between food issues and disabilities. I did have 1 with Prader Willi, so of course his stuff was locked. But others just had really odd hoarding behaviors (one of my girls would hide sleeves of crackers everywhere in her room! I asked one to carry a bag in and when she put her arm down, it was like a trick or treat bag pouring out her sweatshirt sleeve lol). Sometimes, it would cause them to be up all night prowling for food. I had one that would literally beat people up if she thought you had food on you, so she could have it. Out of my eh, probably 200 clients, she was the only one I was probably legitimately scared of. Food has extreme power and causes extreme behavioral issues. I had 1 that would try to go to the store and sell sex for a Coke and a honey bun. And trust me, they were all well fed, healthy, but had treats- not deprived. Food just seemed to be a big issue for many!

I can 100% guarantee our food was never locked to punish. Loving parents (by every account she was) don't lock food for control issues. They lock it for the safety of the child.

Here is an article that talks about some of the issues:
https://www.ambitiousaboutautism.org.uk/understanding-autism/health/eating-issues

These common issues are difficult enough; their knock-on effects can cause further problems. For instance, it’s common for people with autism to eat either too much or too little. This tends to cause problems with general health and wellbeing, and trying to get your son or daughter to eat more or less than they want can lead to conflicts and behaviour problems. Refusing certain food groups also means missing important nutrients: even if the quantities are right, the quality may be lacking.

thank you. I had no idea about the extreme food hoarding, and food issues before.

Not only his defense, but he is being charged a per diem for care in the jail as per BCSO website. At this point there
are numerous people/organizations looking to see if he has liquid assets. I hope the assets have been divided up
to protect his brother's share.

Family friend Rocxanne Deschamps is also seeking to become administrator of the estate for Cruz and his younger brother. Cruz lived with Deschamps briefly after his mother died.

something not feeling right about this to me?

Agree, and she filed the day after the shooting. If anyone has doubts about this look up her LE record in Palm Beach Co., Fl.
and Broward Co., Fl.

The day after the shooting, the day after the reports of 800k were reported, and just a couple days before the brother turned 18.

I know the $175K medical lawsuit settlement was a reported amount, and the award was specified to go to a trust for the boys. Assuming the entire $175K went into the settlement (since that amount may be before or after attorney fees), how much would a well-managed trust have earned since then? I think it was 2008? Could it have grown to $800K?

After Cruz’s father, Roger, died in 2004, his mother sued the doctors who treated him. The case was settled in 2008 for $175,000. He and his brother were each given a $46,750 annuity, and the remaining $81,500 was split between his mother, her lawyers and other fees.

Bringing forward kdg's post with more detail on the settlement.

Could it have gotten to 800k? Not unless it was invested in Bitcoin. And if NC said that *he* was going to get 800k, presumably that would mean his brother would have an equal amount coming his way. JMO, but not a snowball's chance.

ETA. Just ran a quick and dirty calc, 50k at 6% from 2008 to 2018 would be a bit under 100k. 6% is probably optimistic, given near zero interest rates over most of that time. If it were all in stock, the average annual return over that period was 7.3.%. My numbers are probably a bit off, lol, but not off enough to get anywhere near 800k.

ETA Again... At 10%, it would be a bit under 150k, just for comparison.

Another, not very thorough, mapping of NC's journey through schools near his home area. The details about his schooling
have been pretty vague since the beginning. And the dates and confirmation of suspensions and expulsions has
been muddy also. I have all along suspected the school board is concerned about their culpability here and went into
CYA mode early on. Just my skeptical opinion.

He was a special needs students. When I was a teacher, IEPs were kept inder lock and key. Only authorized personnel were allowed to look at them.

As far as I can tell, they followed approrpiate steps by having him in alternative schools and then having him work back to the least restrictive environment. . Laws for special education are federal. There are all kinds of time limits that must be met with evaluations, etc.

Ugh, can’t ditch the multiple postings. And can’t correct my spelling. Sorry!

I'm going to hope the courts are smart enough to designate a neutral party to oversee the boys estates. His can be used for his defense and his brother can have a court appointed curator- like an advocacy program type. This is an oddly vulnerable situation.

This is a video of a boy who has autism from Parkland. To me, he is more like Cruz would be.

I do not mean the violent part of Cruz, but not the kid that is head banging and screaming all of the time.

Excellent info in this video

I know, and I am sickened over it. This is an unusual set of circumstances. His brother deserves a fresh start regardless of Niks imprisonment. I would love to see him turn things around in a big way.
