During that time, Santiago was described as a traditional soldier working as a combat engineer stationed in Anchorage. According to Olmstead, less than two years after enlisting, Santiago received a general discharge from the Alaska Army National Guard in Aug. 2016 for unsatisfactory performance. Officials wouldn't confirm the details behind the discharge. He left service in Alaska as a private first class.

Looks like it was a general discharge

here it is

[h=1]served in Alaska Army National Guard[/h]

and somewhere else.

WOW it is storming here like heck!

decade-long history of military service dating back to 2007.
Lt. Col. Candis A. Olmstead said, Santiago joined the Puerto Rico National Guard when he was 17 years old. In April of 2010, he was deployed overseas, serving in Iraq for about 10 months. After his tour, Santiago joined the Army Reserves, before joining the Alaska Army National Guard in Nov. of 2014.

Is private good class indicate like high up ranking??

his mind was being controlled by the CIA and was being forced to watch videos for ISIS in Nov. 2016. He was allegedly transported to a mental health facility following the incident.

receiving psychological treatment while living in Alaska. Bryan Santiago said his family got a call in recent months from Esteban Santiago’s girlfriend alerting them to the situation.

I don't think one could get their sister to pretend like he is sick so he can use that cover up for something else. Much is slowly coming out that we are dealing with a person with serious mental problems, who has lost contact with reality in the past..

Many with PTSD can become psycotic if a certain flashback starts . Just moo

I will bet his unsatisfactory performance is going to be related at some level to peculiar behaviors or thoughts etc just speculating, but an image of a person who is having more and more issues related to state of mind. just mo

No, it's only E-2. Not the lowest but certainly not high ranking.

He told the FBI voices were telling him to fight for ISIS. He wasn't hiding it from anyone. It was the manifestation of his mental illness. His mental illness and his connection to ISIS seem to be intertwined.

We don't really know much about his motives for going to the FBI. Maybe he had been downloading Jihadist info and was scared the FBI was going to come after him? We don't know what he told them about.

My brother is a schizophrenic. It is very hard for me to imagine him going to the FBI about the voices in his head. It does not ring true to me, that[s all. JMO

Hmmm, so he did get a general under honorable conditions which is why people are getting confused about it being an honorable or not. I'd LOVE to know the details of his "unsatisfactory performance".

He said he didn't want to hurt anyone. That was his motive for going to the FBI.

Like really? It was some elaborate scheme to avoid prosecution. Waltz into the FBI and tell them you hear voices to cover up your internet searches of Jihadist propaganda? Kind of dumb to get on the FBI's radar if your intent is to eventually carry out a terroristic attack.

Reports say he told the FBI he was afraid ISIS was controlling his mind according to the FBI and we know for sure the FBI was convinced he had seriously mental health issues and needed to be hospitalized.

I thought it was because he didnt always show up for duty.

His superior can say it was for unsatisfactory performance but he still could have officially gotten an honorable discharge. I wonder if "unsatisfactory performance" is code for "started acting batshit crazy"?

that is what i thought

I would tend to think terrorists would hesitate to walk into a united states FBI office to discuss ISIS related matters.

Not a good idea in this climate!!

Aunt is describing mental concerns - it is coming forward

Blurting out I am not Jewish does have some looseness in thought process implications.

They do that a lot , blurt something out that has no connection to what is going on around them.

What they blurt out makes no sense to us. But it does make sense to what is going on in their own heads and their current thought process.

Right before he shot he was thinking about not being Jewish. Makes me think that maybe this was an anti-Jewish assault.

I was thinking it might have to do with the argument he had on the plane. ? jmo

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume the "altercation" on the plane had to do with someone saying he was Jewish or something.

It sounds like someone called him one before he decided to load his weapon.

I think I'll go with the FBI on this one.

The FBI declared that the brothers in Boston were free of terrorist ties. And they declared that the couple in San Bernadino were free and clear to marry and stay in the US, no problems. I think they also investigated and cleared the Pulse shooter, IIRC.

we have someone with 13 years in "war" stuff who ends up discharged for unsat performance - sounds like a decline , which is typically how these particular disorders progress generally

Yes, I'm seeing the decline too. He wasn't showing up for work so got discharged. He was evicted because he didn't pay rent. He seemed overwhelmed with the responsibilities of being a father. He's hearing voices and goes to the FBI to tell them.

I'm wondering if he figured - what the hell, I'll shoot up people, give myself up peacefully when LE arrives, and spend the rest of my life in jail where I don't have to deal with adult life.

IDK.

Then he would have faced court martial. You don't get to not show up for work in the military. It's not like a civilian job where you get a warning and then the next time get fired. I mean you go to work or you risk going to military prison. However, if they knew he was nuts, they might give him a general under honorable conditions just to get him out of their hair.

i wouldnt get carried away assuming someone accused him of being jewish prior to this either, this is a person that self-reported himself to the FBI for having delusional thoughts...

edit - if that report is even true

I don't think it was his intent at the time. I think he was torn about it. He didn't want to follow his urges so he tried to turn himself in. But that doesn't mean that he edit eventually end up a Jihadist.

I don't understand the desperation to connect this to ISIS instead of investigating the possibility that it's fueled by a mental health disorder as evidenced by his stay in a psychiatric facility and statements to the FBI that he doesn't want to hurt anyone.

Please show me just ONE other example of a terrorist who begged the FBI for help. I'll wait.
