DId everyone but me know you could pack guns in your suitcases?? That just blow my mind- you now have a gun inside any airport ??

How could this exact thing not have happened over and over already???

Because most people are good, honest and kind. :)

Considering only what we know at this point, I think that you've summed it up pretty good. It's nothing to take lightly when folks start hearing voices, and seeing things. I'm leaning toward he finally just snapped. If it hadn't happened at the airport, it would have happened somewhere else, in the near future.

With ya

him having connections with Naples fits in the chaotic mind, he evidently was pretty sick

Does anyone know what the altercation with a passenger was about - it would be interesting to see how out of touch with reality he was earlier?

I'm awaiting word from the news detailing the wonderful people that are now gone and hope that the focus will turn to just what we've lost today. Not that I'm masochistic, but I just ache for the victims and their families.

I not sure if this is going off topic or not, but last night my husband and I decided to go visit friends in Denmark this spring because we can get a nonstop, round trip ticket for about $350. I couldn't believe how cheap the tickets were! We can't fly back East to see our families for that cheap. My husband commented it's probably because of all the terrorist attacks and people are afraid to go. I said well we could also be killed in a mass shooting right here at home and I personally want to see the world and visit our friends. If I'm going to die in a terror attack might as well see a beautiful spring in Denmark before I die! He reluctantly agreed and we contacted our friends to let them know we were coming.

Then today this shooting happens as if to prove my point. SMH.

People are freaking out about checked luggage with firearms. But I don't really think that is the issue here at all. I mean, for one thing...anyone on the street can walk into baggage claim with a firearm if they wanted to. So whether or not it can be in a checked bag doesn't make much difference to me. Though I do worry about psychos going "hey...I never thought about an airport baggage claim before. Great idea!"

I'd like to hear more about what happened after he went into the FBI last year and went into a mental health facility. Were they aware that he had guns? Why was he released? Etc.

I think I am the only one that is freaking out!!

FBI agent George Piro, who is in charge of the Miami field office, confirmed that Santiago had come into the Anchorage office and clearly indicated at the time that he was not intent on hurting anyone.

Authorities said the motive for the attack was under investigation. Shortly after the shooting, and before details of Santiago's mental health became public, Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida said that it remained to be seen whether it was terrorism or the work of "someone who is mentally deranged."
Piro said authorities are looking at leads in several states and have not ruled out terrorism. "We're looking at every angle, including the terrorism angle," he said
Santiago, who is in federal custody, will face federal charges and is expected to appear in court Monday, Piro said.

The comment was in reference to me, and I was speculating (I had said "if it turns out..." etc), it was based on the MSM reports of him having gone to the FBI claiming to have heard voices and been admitted to a psych facility. Hope that helps!

Does anyone know if he went to the FBI claiming to hear voices before or after the honorable discharge?

Add me to the list of not knowing guns could be legally packed in checked luggage.

Another reason to NOT check luggage. Avoid the fees, the lines, the wait, and the packed guns!

TY I was feeling both lonely and stupid!!

I just (now) dont get the logic of TSA then. All this money to keep people from getting into secure areas of airports when all you had to do was throw in a bag and your off.

Its like they think dangerjoues people care if they are shooting up people who departing instead of arriving- it seems half a##

Ha! I traveled to Italy for 10 days with a carry on last summer! Just packed light weight clothes (middle of summer). It was fantastic not to have to move heavy suitcases from city to city!

To be perfectly honest, in my opinion, this is why it's so hard to identify, diagnose, treat, and prevent some of these incidents. It's easier to say it was terrorism because then there's a bad guy, a boogeyman, to blame.

According to his brother, he was getting mental health treatment in Alaska the past 2 years.

Just because someone has mental health issues, that does not mean they cannot ALSO be a terrorist.

On CNN it was reported that witnesses said he yelled out one thing right before he began shooting : " I am NOT Jewish!"

He may very well have been mentally ill. But he may have also been inspired by the Jihadis. JMO :cow:

Well, yeah, not at that moment. He went in there to prevent people from being hurt I would assume, but why wouldn't you take his guns? They took that guy Tarek from HGTV's Flip or Flop guns after he ran off into the woods after seeming suicidal. I mean it was voluntary but they held them for 30 days and this guy seems like he would have gladly done anything at that time to prevent something bad happening. You'd think he'd at least be on some sort of TSA list of people to watch out for. Has there been a single mass shooter or bomber of late who hasn't been in contact with the FBI?! How many people have to tell the FBI someone is dangerous before they care? I mean this guy told them himself and still didn't get their attention. It's getting weird!

Oh Lord, I grew up in the South. If people weren't openly carrying them on their body, they had their rifles and shotguns on the racks in the back window of their truck.

Born in Mass, moved to Cali when I was 2. :summer: Not too much in the way of open carrying going on. Now concealed? I'm sure that's another story.

He told the FBI voices were telling him to fight for ISIS. He wasn't hiding it from anyone. It was the manifestation of his mental illness. His mental illness and his connection to ISIS seem to be intertwined.

It was November of 2016. I posted a link earlier. Not sure when the discharge was.

I was just curious. I know this may not be the case, but it wouldn't be the first time someone claimed to be hearing voices to get out of the military. Again, I'm not saying this is the case here but in my experience as a registered nurse, I know it's been done.

Oh my gosh, you didn't know? I guess this must be especially shocking for you then. It doesn't happen because most people who pack guns in their suitcases are law abiding citizens.
Exactly.

Oh, very interesting! I didn't know that.
