FL - Five killed, 8 wounded in shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport, 6 Jan 2017

 • #601
The governor and the local congresswoman talked about how they were trying to help everybody that was getting on cruise ships with her identification and passports and luggage

FBI: Accused shooter came to Florida to carry out attack

Q Was the BAU involved in the Anchorage interactions?
A He walked in and the Agents noticed his erratic behavior and were motivated to call local authorities and to have him taken into custody and evaluated at a medical facility for mental health.

FBI finished interviewing subject

FBI plans to announce charges this afternoon

FBI looking at for accused shooter lived and visited

FBI interviewed 175 Witnesses

FBI not ruling out any possibilities, including terrorism

We have not identified an altercation either on the flight or at the baggage claim. It is very early in the investigation and we have not completed all the interviews of everyone that was on both legs of the aircraft.

FBI - suspect had semi-automatic handgun

FBI interviewed suspect family

FBI reviewing airport videos

6 victims still in the hospital

Preliminary information is he was not put on a no-fly list

As to shooter was acting alone... we are going over quite a bit of information and leads

Per Sherriff responding to "will be there a difference in security Now"
Yes, we will be beefing up security for a period of time. They (le) are carrying long guns and we will evaluate that going forward.

Q from the moment the first shots were fired, how long did it take for a le officer to come in contact with the suspect
A 70-80 seconds

Q what do you think of the general safety of airports
A I think the general of safety of airports is phenomenal. When you have somebody with mental illness or you have a (???) there's not much that law enforcement can do about it. That's why we train to do mitigation - to lessen the loss of life, and we've done a phenomenal job .

He spoke then about our country.. people that have a mental illness.. or people that are on a no-fly list... they flat-out should not be allowed to have handguns or long rifle.

Now lady commisioner answering questions..

She's discussing the procedures for carry on ammo and guns and passenger baggage. I think we need to revisit that. We need to balance the Public's need of freedom to travel and protecting the people that are traveling with them. We need to relook at procedures re carry firearms in their checked baggage but we need to look at security around baggage claim......

End of presser

Per Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz - They have 20,000 items that they are trying to get back to the owners that were left behind after this happened.

As to the bolded part---does that mean that all terrorists that shoot innocents are not mentally competent?

.
Going to the FBI and telling them he heard voices, voluntarily committing himself, and then doing what he did, then lying on the ground after he ran out of bullets. He needed proper mental health care that our vets nor our civilians get. Now if he'd never tried to reach out for help, had no history of schizophrenia and his family had said, oh, we don't know what happened, he seemed just fine all of these years, and he yelled out allahu akbar, along with having visited some sort of web sites, or training camp, then I'd say, this dude is an ISIS inspired terrorist. I've not dug into the news this morning but as of last night he seemed like a vet, with a rather severe mental health problem that went untreated, (two weeks is not enough treatment, imo) until he lost touch w/reality at some point on that plane.

If there was an earlier link for guns lawfully being in carry-on bags, I missed it. Anyone?

(Yes, I realize it's possible a passenger could place firearm in carry-on bag and could take it onboard, if TSA agents do not detect).

I am sure there are LE that get to do that.

I fly a lot. Hubby and I have accidentally left prohibited items in our ouggage. Nothing big. Once a knife for cutting fish.

There is a new card yoj can get which lets you avoid the taking off of shoes and jacket and openong your laptop. It costs $80 and is good for five years. The last couple of times we were chosen to go in the special TSA line and avoid those hassles. We had not applied. We were selected maybe because of our profiles? Not sure. But it convinced us to purchase the special cards next time we are in the US. I have dual citizenship.

Airports are secure only after you go through the security area. Anyone can go into the airport before security. There is zero way to control that. If you had to go through security before you entered the airport, you still would be in an area where there are plenty of people waiting.

Someone mentioned Israel. What do they do?

I think we need to face the reality that we can't even keep up with authentic terrorists.

We do not have the resources to put every mentally ill person on this or that list. We just do not have the money or resources.

The media going nuts that he had a scarf and lifted his finger in a certain way does not make a terrorist.

He saw it on some video on YT i bet, and copied it - kids mimic stuff. This gentlemen IMO is not cognitively capable of grasping the nuances of what has motivated San Bern or Paris folks

He rolled on the ground like a puppy when he ran out of bullets. Terrorists want to die for they cause - there are differences here that clearly point to mental illness.

Do some delusional psychotic folks watch some YT videos about ISIS probably.

Do some deukslinial psychotic folks probably watch some videos on aliens and ufos probably.

Until as a society we look at what some of these incidents are, we can continue to focus on ISIS , while we should be focusing on untreated mental illness, education for the sign symptoms of severe psychopathology.

Its a better story if ISIS - but the reality it is affords us the opportunity to totally blow off looking at our problems.

This is IMO mental illness - therefore we can not blame anyone other than our society for failing to look in the right direction when all fingers are pointing to failed mental health as opposed to terrorism

Continuing to do so only assures that not only will ISIS continue to want us dead and disrupt our society, but neglected to address overt issues on our land.

Everything going on in our country is not about ISIS.

Its so coo coo. Omar was mental. The media focused that he watched some TY videos that were about ISIS - while completely ignoring that he spent an evening (all night) before Pulse relentlessly looking up information about anit psycotic medications.

So looking at some terror videos is the front page while the real issue - his increasingly disturbing behaviors in the days leading up to the attack is ignored.

He was a grown man. That night mommy starting to try and find him clearly knew he was sliding down, and started to look for her child - that tells tons.

Is their mutual exclusivity between a terrorist and mental illness - of course not. One has to look at the flavor and acuity of the illness involved and come to the conclusion that in this and Pulse the core reason for those deaths were profound mental illness.

San bern folks can we say they did not have a mental illness of some sort - no we can't- but we can see that there beleif systems resulted in the events of that day.

Its a case by case basis. I would be stunned if he did not have ISIS stuff on his computer.

I would also bet we would find CIA stuff on there also.

These illnesses result in very obsessive and compulsive behaviors.

The media coming up with this idea that this guy had the mental capacity to think , since I am an ISIS terrorist, maybe, just in case they find out I watched some yt video on ISIS, so I will go in myself , and create this cover story, that the CIA is forcing me to watch ISIS videos, then cause I am a terrorist in the making, when I make my big attack, I will have them all fooled by my "plan".

Then I will be able to , at the hospital, fool a treatment of trained professionals that I am so compromised that I need two weeks in a inpatient psychiatric setting.

We know what mental illness looks like . We live it with our folks. The notion that people can malinger and "fool" folks that are working with the most acutely ill is in my opinion preposterous ..

Then this treatment team is so fooled by this guy, that dozens of mental health professionals (In inpt there are a lot of people involved 24/7 that are trained to observe) have been so fooled that they have no hesitancy in clearly reporting back to the FBI that this is a mentally disturbed person, not a terrorist .......................just use common sense media.

In sum this guy was able to fool the initial FBI agents, who contacted cops, who he fooled into believing he needed mental health illness, and then during the initial assessment at the facility fooled the the person doing the assessment to determine he needed a bed and was admitted.

He was then able for 14 days to fool psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, mental health therapists, psyc nurses, trained support staff who live with the acuity mentally ill, into believing he was mentally ill - when in reality this was his cover up plan to not get caught being a terrorist? That is just dumb.

If this plan was made into a blockbuster motion picture, I think it may bomb at the boxoffice- it has a gaping plausibility hole.

I would assume he was admitted to facility connected to the armed forces. If we add to our horrid screenplay, that in these setting these treatment teams deal directly with profound mental (PTSD) illnesses that directly relate to folks who experience long exposure to the horrors of war.

So, this guy is so good at faking illness- he can even do so to a group of folks who are highly skilled with folks suffering from PTSD psychotic symptomology.

He was so thought out that he figured he better start behaving oddly (so he can get away with being an ISIS terrorist) around his family.

Then he better beat up his girlfriend so she too, believes he is mentally ill. Then he thinks oh I better start some fights with neighbors so they too think I am mental.

All of the abovementioned are clearly associated with mental illness, are also indicative of "explosiveness" which is directly related to post-combat flashback like symptomology.

Deteriorating performance in the workplace is so common with this diagnosis, and he gets discharged for unsatisfactory job performance - that is the progression.

Perhaps most stunning is that his increasingly problematic behaviors and thinking patterns become more acute, after directly serving in a setting where he actual was in a war setting seals the deal! MOO

It just how the illness works-. How would some guy who was a low-level armed person know so much about how to fein being acutely mentally ill?

It defies logic.

Elliot Rogers being able to fool the cops who did a quick welfare check - makes sense. Look at his acuity and what his illness was. There are differences.

One can't address something if they are not looking it in the face.

imo only

FBI: Airport gunman traveled to Fort Lauderdale for massacre; terrorism not ruled out
Associated Press
Saturday, January 7, 2017 12:00pm

[…] Santiago had been discharged from the National Guard last year after being demoted for unsatisfactory performance. His brother, Bryan Santiago, said Saturday that his brother had requested psychological help but received little assistance. Esteban Santiago said in August that he was hearing voices, Bryan Santiago said in Spanish on Saturday as he stood outside his family's home. He said he told his brother then to seek help.
"How is it possible that the federal government knows, they hospitalize him for only four days, and then give him his weapon back?" Bryan Santiago said.
His mother declined to comment as she stood inside the screen door, wiping tears from her eyes. The only thing she said was that Esteban Santiago had been tremendously affected by seeing a bomb explode next to two of his friends when he was around 18 years old while serving in Iraq. […]

LaborDayRN Appreciate your many informative posts in this & other threads.

Likely that some here have seen on MSM vid or pix of ppl 'open-carrying' esp where new statutes allow. When I've visited some open carry jurisdictions, I notice a few. In visiting in Europe multiple times, I've seen military personnel w rifles, in hands or on shoulder holsters/rigs (terminology?) & handguns in a couple countries, in banks, airports, train stns, etc. A bit unnerving to me the first few times.

Re ^bbm, is it possible you have not seen for lack of training/experience in detecting someone w CCW? After a CCW class, reading, & watching youtube vids re detecting CCW, I've been able to identify more CCW'ers than I ever expected.

Some "tells" ---- gun 'printing'/shadowing against clothes (above/below waistband, or pants leg above ankle, certain squirmy gestures in checking/adjusting holster at waistband, etc). It's a skill that LEOs use.

Hi al66pine! Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate all you bring to WS as well! :)

It's absolutely possible (and probable) that people may walk by me with concealed weapons and I don't notice. I really don't look that close to be honest. But as far as open carry, I can't think of one time I've seen that.

I've been in situations in other countries that have unnerved me though. When visiting Costa Rica there were military or LE personnel (not sure which) at banks and other locations with huge automatic weapons. :scared: That made me feel rather uncomfortable.

Not all schizophrenic people have the same tendencies and behavior. They are still individuals.

Off-topic, but I love your picture of baby DeOrr---I hope we find some answers for him soon!

I'm going to back and read the posts since I signed off, but I am still wondering why we check guns at airports. I have flown about 10 times in my life, and on three occasions my luggage was lost. :kickcan:

Airport officials also say they are trying to match more than 20,000 bags and personal items with their owners. Authorities say it is a complex and time-consuming process

http://www.ctvnews.ca/world/florida-attack-updates-fort-lauderdale-airport-reopens-after-shooting-1.3231538

Santiago had lived with a woman and two small children.

arrived for Delta flight more than four hours early, which was unusual

reloaded at least once and fired on horrified passengers, then lay down on the floor in a spread-eagle position and waited for authorities to arrest him.

Jay Cohen was dropped off at the airport for a flight --finding an unusual scene
“The airport was like a ghost town,” Cohen, 51, a consultant, said in a telephone interview. “I didn’t see anyone around.”

It wasn’t until he walked all the way up to the Delta counter without encountering a line or a single soul that he noticed about 20 people huddled together behind a nearby concrete wall.

He said he peeked over the counter and saw the Delta employees on the ground trying to cover their heads with their hands.

“Hurry up. Get behind here,” someone whispered to him, he said. “Active shooter. Active shooter.”

police cars began screeching up to the curb.
“It went from eerie quiet from when I walked in to pure mayhem in just minutes,” he said. “It was chaos.”

I just figured out why this sooo freaks me out

I think some of it I love my airplanes.

TSAs entire premise is we have to keep bad things off our beautiful machines that soar in wild blue yonder

Poof gone, first visual I got of a bunch of people running in all directions at will with no one haveing a clue where anyone is going or doing.

I see hundreds of people all aound the planes.

All someone has to do is do this , this exact way, with unknow accomplices, when it happens again same thing people are gonna run.

Now we got bad guys that have complete freedom to place some stuff in or on aircraft.

I think the reason why this was so scary in terms of bad people watching it constantly the last 24 hours is none of us knew that they were gonna go in the direction to go past totally checked places -- the damn gates.

The ones with bombs just go out the gates like 100's did yesterday.

When I saw that little group going on a runway - I thought, this is so out of control , so not OK, If they wanted to they could just blow a totally fueled plane..

It is not the location of what happened yesterday that is so concerning -- it is what happened after that is so troubling.

Imagine a huge airport (Lauderdale is 21 or 22 IIRC -you guys have taught me so many cool internet jive translations !)) and the ones that do the placeing can get away - they have nothing on them - its in some plane or planes.

Then we are going to have consider the true likelihood (did not happen yesterday) that they cannont take off all the baggage that was in the planes (It is a high pressure airport - there were planes being loaded with bags.

Never thought of people escaping in that direction and baggage claim (just for baggage security only is a total farce as it iis

The whole game just changed - access to aircraft gone-- it ends up helping them - some cargo hold doors are already open for them

Can you imagine have to go through security to get to the baggage claim?

The reality of that impossible - there is not space in airports to set up another whole ordeal.

If they tried that airline traffic would plummet - are you gonna put up with all that nonsense again .

Half of the destinations you could drive to quicker if they try that .

They could blow up the fuel barns - there running all over the place - it reminded me on wide shots of a ant hill!I

I remember when I was a child everyone dressed up to fly! It was such a big event!

And food and smoking and cabin crew were not like nurse Ratched in One FLew Over the Coocoos nest, empty planes, the seat in front of you was not up your nose!!

When someone put their seat back you did not end up with a stranger in your lap!!!

Taking off on time!! You could show up 45 minutes and not end running a marathon to make it !!

Hey could be a joy for some people, (strippers I suppose) but you did not need to strip !! I just find getting dressed twice somewhat redundant!!

I suppose an inappropriate pat down could be fun depending on your orientation!

Cabin crew would let you run all over the plane!!

They did not sell 187 tickets for planes that have the capacity for 138!!

Ahhhh the good old says

Bing bing big Bonus :: You did not end up in intensive care with your life not a certainty.

Yup. Saw that in Costa Rica as well. The area around Limon is not safe and cruise ships are highly monitored to make sure passengers are safe.

Someone mentioned Israel. What do they do?

The Israeli flag carrier is routinely named the most secure airline in the world thanks to its exceedingly thorough passenger interviews, use of armed air marshals on every flight and obsessive attention to screening (check-in times for El Al flights are much longer than for other carriers). Those measures have resulted in no hijackings in the airline's history except for one in 1968. And since its founding in 1948, no El Al passenger jet has ever crashed.

Wondering if he chose Florida because of the death penalty?
Something about going from cold Alaska to hot Florida to commit murder..hmm. Are the jails better? Hatred for the type of travelers that are likely to be there at this time of year?
