September 24, 2007, Monday-Missing 20 months- Family Letter
It’s so hard to comprehend that 20 months have gone by since we last spoke with Jenn. Last heard her voice, heard her laugh, the last time we told her we loved her. Surreal…..continues to be the word that so often comes to mind. Time has stopped in so many aspects, yet flies by at an alarming pace. How could this have happened? The massive efforts of so many who are giving of yourselves, your time and commitment to helping our family and the Orlando Police Department keep the AWARENESS regarding her abduction will in the end work. Awareness is critical in keeping the phones ringing with tips, we need answers and they are out there. We need the people who know something, think they know something or overheard something to please break their silence, help our child be found. No one deserves to be taken against their will!

Humbled? You bet, at the goodness of so many who continue to help in so many ways. The prayers, strength and positive energy that are sent to us on a daily basis is in part what keeps us moving forward. We are as determined as ever to find Jenn and bring her home, FAITH…HOPE…BELIEF….MIRACLES…..

We were asked to do a segment for The Montel Williams Show on Missing Children along with America’s Most Wanted. His entire staff was a pleasure to work with, as was Montel. He is a passionate and compassionate man and we feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to be part of his show and again keep Awareness high for Jenn’s case. It will air Tuesday, October 9,2007. Check www.montelshow.com for stations and times in your area.

To all of our family, friends, colleagues, neighbors and to Jenn’s friends, coworkers and “sisters”, a huge hug of appreciation and thanks to you all. We know how difficult this has been and continues to be as time passes, we all miss Jenn so terribly. Living is hard, but we must for ourselves, friends and families as Jenn would want us to. If we do not, and we allow evil to take over and cripple us, evil will have won twice. Together and united, we will take a stand against evil and not allow it to win. Evil stole Jenn from our lives, but not our memories, never our memories.

Please continue to pass her website on to everyone you know here and abroad, ask businesses to consider placing a Missing Person Alert on their home page and then linking it to this website. By sheer numbers, we will continue to increase the awareness, thus hopefully reaching out to all groups of people from all walks of life. If everyone was aware, then perhaps we would be successful in reaching those individuals involved. We can only hope and pray that sooner, rather than later we will have found our beloved Jenn.

There is HOPE!!! Johnia Berry's killer has just been found! I'm sure some of have heard of this case as it is somewhat similar to Jen's except they had Johnia's body but not the killer. It took 2 years 9 months. You can see Johnia's section in this forum or go to www.johniaberry.org.

Of course they had the killer's DNA in Johnia's case so is there any DNA in the Jen's case?

Even if there isn't this is still a sign of hope. It may not give us something to talk about every day but it could take another year or 2 or 5 but Jen's case still could be solved.

Thank you for the words of HOPE! That's what it is all about. I hope every day for Jenn and answers.

There have been obscure reports of DNA from her car.

However, how would anyone know if it's the perpetrators DNA?

It is extremely difficult to solve a crime if the victim cannot be located.
Where could Jennifer be?

I finally gave up trying to figure out the case when I realized the family wasn't going to question any information LE has or does not have. The Kesse's have taken a passive role and, in turn, LE ran roughshod over them...giving them only tidbits and a lot of "we are working on it" doubletalk. LE should be investigated by the AG's office of their effectiveness in handling Jenn's case from the beginning.

  • #168
I do believe there are many that share your sentiments SS.

  • #169
We all know there are incompetent LE in various communities, or, maybe it's just that they haven't had a lot of higher profile cases.

Is the answer in dealings with LE that of Jennifer's parents or Beth Holloway? Neither approach has been effective. Does a person trust LE, or do they hire a private investigator? No one should be faced with making such a decision after losing a loved one.

For the Montel Show, it appears that it might be on Thursday 10/11 versus Tuesday 10/9. Visit www.montelshow.com to find out where you can watch it. Please don't give up on Jenn. I don't think that any of us, unless we have been through what the Kesse's are going thru, can say what we would and would not do.

While I am certain there is no right or wrong way to handle having a daughter or son go missing...to simply ignore the fact that LE did nothing to preserve evidence in the apartment and the various other things they failed to take to task, imo, was an enormous mistake. They wanted to believe she was alive so badly, they would not take an active role in overseeing that LE was properly handling the case.

I think it is wonderful they are proactive now in going on talk shows, making speeches, and the other ways they are bringing to light the horrors of having a missing child. However, I feel this knot in the pit of my stomach when I think of the opportunities missed to actually find Jennifer and bring her abductor to justice.

I just think that no one knows truly how they will react in a situation until they are placed in one. For example, I can say that if someone holds a gun to me, that I will try to run away zig zag etc as it is hard to get a shot if im not going straight. Also, if I'm forced ino my car and made to drive, then i cant say that i would intentionally get into an accident.

I think its the same when someone goes missing. You dont necessarily know what the proper procedure is. Before Jenn went missing, I didn't lock my car doors unless I thought I was in an unsafe area. After she went missing, I lock my doors the second I get into the car. I've discusse with my boss and coworkers when to get concerned if I havent called or showed up to work, set up a check in plan with friends and family.

I think that when they were told that Jenn didnt show up to work they didnt think she had been abducted but rather was hurt in her own apartment (i.e. fell in the shower, etc) so when they found out her door was locked and car was gone, it appeared that she had just gone to work.

I truly think that there are things that LE should have done (i.e. release the full video of the suspect the second they had it!!!) but I definitely do not feel the Kesse's did anything wrong in their search for Jennifer other then have faith in LE which is what ordinary prudent people have unless they have either been a victim of a crime or know someone who has.

Yes, and I apologize for my outburst against the Kesses. You are right, of course. I am just frustrated because LE did drop the ball and there isn't anything I would like more than if they had done their job. This certainly was not the Kesse's fault.

If it has brought an awareness to you and your friends, it has served a purpose. Life is too fragile to ignore the most simple gestures of safety. : )

I've followed Jennifer's case since she first went missing, even though I haven't posted here lately. I agree with you that we may say we'd react one way but when a situation (like what must have befallen Jennifer)actually happens, may not be able to act or react that way. Anyone who's followed the case of Kelsey Smith can say that an abduction can take mere seconds, leaving the victim no time at all to do anything.

I don't fault Jennifer's family at all for them trusting LE to do their jobs, but I do think the procedure could be changed that when a responsible adult doesn't report to work and is missing that LE can immediately treat the situation as a potential crime rather than the person has voluntarily run away. So much valuable time, and leads, are lost the way it is now.

Panthera- that is exactly what the Kesse's want for everyone in the state of Florida and elsewhere moving forward. There was bill proposed in the last Legislative session, but unfortunately, it didnt have a sponsor in the House, so the bill died in committee stages. The next session begins in 2008, and there is already sponsorship for the Bill from the Senate and working on getting sponsors in the House. The intention is to get missing people, regardless of age, treated as priorities in getting information out there and working with other agencies to hope that the 48 hrs that were lost when Jenn went missing and her car was missing dont happen again.

It is worth remembering that in this case there are video images of the suspect both parking the car and then walking away.

And yet 20 months later nobody is any the wiser on who the suspect is or what happened to Jennifer.

Why?

To this writer it seems the disappearance of Jennifer wasn't taken seriously enough right at the beginning and the two days lost before her car was found were crucial.

It is said that desperate situations call for desperate measures. I believe it would have been prudent to instigate private lines of enquiry to try and find out just what happened. It is quite possible that nothing would have been found but I think it would have been worth trying.

There are thousands of unsolved abductions and you can see quite a few of them on this site.

It is just about impossible to imagine the pain this ongoing nightmare has caused Jennifer's family and friends.
It is just so unfair.

What do you mean by "instigate private lines of enquiry"???

(BTW, it's inquiry not enquiry)

Not to be the grammar police, but enquiry is correct...

enquiry - a systematic investigation of a matter of public interest

Part of the promotional material for the Montel show says this:

'You won't believe what her parents, Drew and Joyce, found on an apartment surveillance tape the night she went missing.'

It will be interesting to see if there is anything new in this sad and frustrating case.
