A mother facing neglect charges in connection with the deaths of her newborn twins told West Melbourne detectives she did not know she was pregnant until she gave birth as she sat on the toilet.

Thomas told officers her newborn boy wasn't crying or breathing and that the baby was blue and cold to the touch. Her other newborn, whom she did not initially report, was found in a trash can under the carport, wrapped in a plastic bag. The umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck and underneath her arm, police said.
