GA - Active Shooter on Emory College campus - Atlanta - Aug 8, 2025

One distinguishing aspect of the CDC is that they can attract crazies from both sides of the political spectrum:

- Right wing opposition to COVID policies (past news, but to extremists, its likely still current).

- Left wing and Right wing opposition to vaccine policies. One place where religious fundamentalists and trendy crunchies can meet and greet each as friends is opposition to school vaccination policies. CDC does not set these policies. But.... extremists don't care.

Yes. It will never not fascinate and depress me that the continuum of political beliefs is, eventually, a circle (or at least, a horseshoe-shape). The crazies on either end eventually go so far over the bend that they end up way over in the same extremist boat and ultimately behaving the exact same way as each other.

I am so very sad for the officer's family. What an absolutely pointless thing to die for. I hope they can take some comfort knowing that he protected others and likely saved lives in sacrificing his own.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the accused shooter as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White of Kennesaw, Georgia. Investigators say White fired toward multiple CDC buildings before entering the CVS store at Emory Point, where a gunfight took place on the second floor. It remains unclear whether White died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.

Just down the street, the CVS remains closed “until further notice,” its glass doors shattered by bullets.

Just five months ago, DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose stood on stage as the leader of his academy class, speaking about duty, sacrifice and the courage to run toward danger.

On Friday, the 33-year-old officer died doing exactly what he promised — responding to an active shooter outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
Rose was chosen as class leader of DeKalb County Police Academy Class 138. Standing before his peers on March 31, he spoke words that now echo with heartbreaking resonance.

“Policing isn’t just about enforcing the law,” Rose said. “It’s about protecting the vulnerable, standing for justice and being the person who runs toward danger when others run away.”

Statement from RFK, Jr, Secretary of Health and Human Services:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic shooting at CDC’s Atlanta campus that took the life of officer David Rose. We stand with his wife and three children and the entire CDC family,” it read. “We know how shaken our public health colleagues feel today. No one should face violence while working to protect the health of others.”

"White’s father had called law enforcement before the shooting to tell them he believed his son was suicidal, the outlet reported, citing sources.

The timeline between that phone call and White’s blow up was not immediately clear."

"Many [at the CDC] are now demanding answers from their health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has long vilified the CDC and contributed to a culture of misinformation that they say makes them targets...

In response to the shooting and reports of White’s [the shooter's] motivations, newly appointed CDC Director Susan Monarez convened an online all-hands meeting of the agency division that focuses on vaccines — the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases...

As the leaders spoke, dozens of staffers posted messages in the meeting chat, many naming Kennedy, who oversees the CDC at the Department of Health and Human Services, citing his years of spreading misinformation about vaccines and vilifying the health agencies he now leads...

For years, Kennedy attacked the CDC...During the pandemic, Kennedy repeatedly framed the CDC and other HHS agencies as 'corrupt,' falsely suggested Covid-19 was a 'bioweapon,' and lied about the dangers of Covid vaccines, calling them 'the deadliest vaccine ever made.'"

“He was very unsettled and he very deeply believed that vaccines hurt him and were hurting other people,” said neighbor Nancy Hoalst, who also told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that White on several occasions brought up his distrust for vaccines while they were in the middle of unrelated conversations.

“He emphatically believed that,” she said, adding, “I had no idea he thought he would take it out on the CDC.”

Absolutely, they have a legitimate complaint. The leadership at HHS and in the WH are putting innocent people’s lives at risk with the spreading of false information. It’s completely unnecessary and unacceptable. All for the purpose of scoring points on social media.

Kennedy and Trump should face legal action for the false accusations they’ve made. JMO

Has anyone seen a photo of the killer or learned anything about the weapons he used? Apparently LE retrieved 5 weapons from the crime scene.

Did he have a job? Was he forced to get the shot or series of shots?

I didn’t get the shot & lot’s of people i know didn’t either & didn’t get the covid.
If his parents forced him to get it he should have blamed them.

Just for the record: The shooter was a 30yo man. He was a full-grown adult when the vaccines were made available.

I’m aware of that. There has been no pic/photo of him. Appears he lived at home, he did yard work for neighbors. Possible he was forced by parents to live at home.

I have friends in Wyoming that did not get the shot, her parents refuse to see them since. Sister in law had to get it to have contact with grandson. Some ppl took it to extremes.

It will be tempting to get distracted from the topic of the thread, which is crimes committed by a man who armed himself and used his weapons against strangers because of his personal beliefs.

Leaders told staffers, many of whom work in the agency’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, the attack was carried out by a shooter who had been reaching out for mental health assistance for weeks before the incident but had not made any threats ahead of time, according to two sources who spoke on the condition they not be named.

It’s unclear who the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White, was reaching out to. The investigation into what led to the shooting is ongoing.

It is clear CDC leaders fear employees could continue to be targeted. In a Saturday email obtained by the AP, CDC's security office asked employees to scrape old CDC parking decals off their vehicles. The office said decals haven’t been required for some time.

According to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, the alleged shooter “is a known person that may have some interest in certain things that I can’t reiterate right now with any confidence until the investigation is fully conducted.”
The alleged shooter’s father called law enforcement before the shooting to report he believed his son was suicidal. It was not immediately clear how much time had elapsed between the call and the shooting.

The suspect’s father contacted police and identified his son as the possible shooter, the law enforcement official told AP. The father said his son had been upset over the death of the son’s dog, and he had also become fixated on the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the official. The family lives in Kennesaw, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of CDC headquarters.

A neighbor of White told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that White spoke with her multiple times about his distrust of COVID-19 vaccines.

Nancy Hoalst, who lives on the same street as White’s family, said he seemed like a “good guy” while doing yard work and walking dogs for neighbors, but he would bring up vaccines even in unrelated conversations.

“He was very unsettled, and he very deeply believed that vaccines hurt him and were hurting other people.” Hoalst told the Atlanta newspaper. “He emphatically believed that.”
