GA GA - John Dax Dunn, 40, Coweta Co, 13 Feb 2020

The remains found in Citrus County on April 4th have been identified, and they are not John's:

Sheriff's Office ID's skeletal remains found in early April

"The skeletal human remains recovered April 4 in a wooded area near West Dunnellon Road between U.S. 19 and North Citrus Avenue, in Crystal River by the Citrus County Sheriff's Office have been identified as 29-year-old, Kyle Clifford Corriveau, according to a news release issued late Friday by the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office."
Good find! Been wondering about those bones. Glad one family will get closure.

If John’s still alive, I hope he comes forward for his kids. No idea what kind of assets would be split or how bad the financial impacts of his looming divorce would be, but child support shouldn’t be too bad. One kid’s grown, one turns 18 in a few months, another in less than 3 years. The youngest only 10. If he did voluntarily go missing, I’m guessing either depression or financial revenge? Hard to enforce an alimony or child support order on someone who’s not working or missing. I wonder if any bank accounts were emptied out?

I was looking up Georgia divorce law. I am not in the legal profession, but I just wanted to get some idea of the intricacies of Georgia divorce laws dealing with a divorce from a missing spouse. I welcome any help from anyone who has experience with divorce laws in Georgia, as I am not an expert! I found this for Georgia at findlaw.com:

"'No Fault' Grounds for Divorce - Irretrievable breakdown

Defenses to a Divorce Filing - For adultery, desertion, cruelty, or intoxication: collusion, both parties guilty, subsequent voluntary condonation and cohabitation, consent

Other Grounds for Divorce - Adultery; cruelty or violence; willful and continued desertion for at least 1 yr.; drug/alcohol addiction; impotency; mental incapacity or insanity; pregnant at the time of marriage by a man other than husband; conviction of a crime for which the sentence is 2 yrs. or more; force, duress, or fraud in obtaining marriage; irreconcilable differences; intermarriage within prohibited degrees of consanguinity or affinity." BBM

From Georgia Legal Aid, I found this information. The last 4 pages of this document deal with a divorcing a spouse that can't be found. If the requirements are met for searching for a missing spouse, an Order of Publication is issued. More requirements need to be met, but a divorce can be granted with a missing spouse and lots of documentation, and published notices. This only addresses the divorce, as I did not check about laws dealing with child custody or division of assets.

The original “complaint for divorce” filed Jan 24 would state the reason. Since it was filed prior to JDD’s disappearance, should be a very different reason. I think the disappearance will only alter the legal process from here on out- such as the requirement for notice via publication. One thing’s for sure- someone seems very determined to proceed with the plan for divorce asap- wasting no time going to “plan b” in the wake of the disappearance.

According to this summary, JDD had 20 days from Jan 24 to respond to the original petition- which would have been Feb 13, the day he told his daughter he was going fishing. Idk if he filed his response prior to taking off?

Very interesting timing -- John's leaving for Florida the day after the last day to respond to the original divorce petition.

Oh my! Isn’t this the second or so set of remains discovered in this area within a short time? How sad! It could very well be John. Whether it is him or not, I pray for swift answers for whatever family members it may involve so they may have closure..

It is the 2nd set, and there are 246 comments so far about this second set of remains. No clues yet if the remains are male or female.

Edited to correct number of comments.

It’s the 2nd set. First ID’d already. I don’t think this JDD though- quite a ways away from where he rented his kayak- and upstream. Even farther upstream from where his truck found. Currents are pretty strong through there. Jmo

What about the currents in the Cross Florida Canal? Are you talking about the currents in the Withlacoochee River?

The 1st set of remains this month were identified as Kyle Correveau, of Homosassa, FL, who disappeared in January 2020.

Idk what I was talking about- lol. I was just looking at that map you posted where body #2 was found & thinking how far it was- in the wrong direction/flow of any river or canal. Paddles kayak rental is near King’s Bay/ Crystal River & the truck was out near Yankeetown. The flow heads toward the gulf. When I’ve kayaked in Crystal River, Weeki Watchee, & Juniper Springs, the currents have been pretty strong. Just thinking it’s not JDD- unless someone put him there. He didn’t get there by kayak imo.

Like @TatianaBarbie, I am not an expert in the legal field but after doing a little research and reading over what @TatianaBarbie and @JudgeJoe shared this is what I gathered with the divorce aspect in relation to him missing:
THIS IS MERELY MY INTERPRETATION based on info gathered from links. I could be totally off on some of it.
Wife originally filed for divorce or papers served Jan 24.
JD had 20 days to respond (Feb 13) which is about the time he left for his trip.
I assume during that 20 day period JD didn’t respond. In effect, the wife moved for a default judgement (divorce by publication).
During that time the wife had to show very detailed evidence of a diligent search for JD before the court will issue an order of publication.
Assuming she was granted that (April 10), the publication must be published in a local newspaper 4 times within 60 days (June 2). JD will have 1 week after the last publication to respond (latest June 9). A link was shared of one of those publications.
Failure to respond= classify divorce under “uncontested”.
As far as property division, support, etc it states that divorcing in this manner does not include decisions on those matters.

It's possible John had someone pick him up by boat after he paddled out.

It's possible, but what would the point be? He's not wanted by the law, so far as we know, and the truck is awfully valuable to leave behind...

  • #136
Truck would go to his daughter if declared dead?
Wife would get it anyway in divorce?
A bright green kayak is still missing. I'm thinking walkaway.

  • #137
At this point, I’m not thinking walkaway. Avoiding divorce proceedings would not help JDD get a fair division of assets if/when he returns. And what man, with a good, stable job at Delta would hand over all home equity, investments, vehicles, bank accounts, etc.? Unless you’re not planning on ever needing the money again- as in suicide. I still think foul play. Just because he went fishing alone, doesn’t mean he didn’t have a visitor- perhaps unexpected.

I keep getting a Mike Williams/ Denise Williams/ Brian Winchester vibe with this case. Who has the most to gain? Jmo & speculation.

  • #138
@JudgeJoe
I’m not familiar with Williams/ Winchester case. I’ll have to look that up.
I have to admit, this case has thrown me for a loop! I think he went on a fishing trip, something he regularly does, just happened to be alone this time. Maybe he needed some time alone to get his thoughts together with the divorce.
Annnnndddd....then, that’s where I start having no clue what to think!

I understand everyone is different; we all have our opinions. But if it were me and I had filed for divorce soon before my husband went missing, making sure I finalized it would be the least of my worries. I’d sit aside whatever differences to help find him. In the middle of his disappearance I sure wouldn’t make sure I “gathered” enough evidence of a diligent search & to give the courts in order to get a divorce by publication...but again, that’s just me.

Yes but if you had filed for divorce & then you killed him, or had him killed, or your lover killed him or had him killed, you might go about things differently. Not saying that’s what happened here, but has happened before- Mike Williams. Took 17 years to find his body & 19 years before his wife & best friend were sentenced to life in prison (well Denise was, different terms for BFF). Mike’s mom wrote a letter to the FL governor DAILY for 9 years begging to keep the case active in pursuit of justice. Just me getting a fishy vibe here straight from the start.
