It isnt working. People get killed, then cops are blamed, then comes retribution. The cycle repeats.
You forgot the rest. Then after a few weeks, things get back to normal, and overall this country is civil.

  • #382
In Mr. Brooks case, it would have been better if he didn't resist arrest.
We can Monday morning quarterback all night. What if he flipped out when he got his ticket and grabbed the tazor then?
Again, do you really want to shoot somebody because of what they might do? Lets say he got away and did not turn and tazer the officer, take his gun from his retention holster and murder Both officers and then go on a rampage in Downtown. Does this happen all that often by suspects running full stride away from the police?

I have seen posts referring to Mr. Brooks having recently been in jail or having past domestic violence arrests - is there an article stating this ? TIA

Go lookup his record. He has been in trouble with the law since 2008.

Yes, thats been the way its gone, but Atlanta mayor issued executive orders as far as use of force goes. Do you really enjoy the burning or looting of any part of this nation?

  • #385
I did not say leave them alone, i said handle it differently. If in this case his car was impounded and he went home to family this would not have happened. If you want to tell me how police can be trained in a few weeks to subdue someone like Mr. Brooks efficiently after a few months of training, i am all ears.
Once again, we can Monday quarterback all night. If Brooks didn't drink and drive, this would not have happened.
I think Mr. Brooks was subdued very efficiently. Why the need to change anything?

  • #386
It will be an interesting trial. I am not a police officer, so I don't know if the officer's actions were wrong or not.

That is when jurors rely on expert witnesses. And if both sides have qualified experts, how does a layman make an informed decision?

I am having a hard time finding his record.

Maybe the mayor issued executive orders, but the legislature gives police the tools to protect themselves, and the law says that if a cop feels his life is threatened, he can use excessive force. I wish the mayor luck.
Do I really like the burning and looting of any part of this nation? Well, one thing it does show me first hand is we need tougher laws to combat criminals that burn and loot.
If you think for one second that those looters and arsonists are going to somehow take over our nation and force change please elaborate and tell me how.

Its expensive and causes mistrust.

I believe anyone facing imminent harm is entitled to protect themselves. Its already changing and nobody is taking over the country.

I found his record:

Go to claytoncounty.gov and go to the corrections department and on the left hand side are three bars, click those and in the upper left corner are court records.

Nypd just announced major changes. I am not the only one doing any “monday morning quarterbacking.”

I don’t like seeing ANY of this rioting and looting that some are calling protesting. I think it needs to be stopped. I do NOT however think the solution is to pander to a crowd of less than law abiding rioters and thieves. Giving in to a tantrum only causes more, and bigger tantrums.

I am asking if there was any alternative to the guy asleep in his car because he was too drunk after celebrating his daughter’s 8th b-day to end up dead. And mind you, I am not thinking about BLM, but just as anything else who ended up drunk publicly.

My husband said, “could they just shoot him in the leg?” I said, no. I understand that when police shoots, they shoot to kill.

But before? As I have said, I bet that any policeman has friends who have issues with alcohol, some drink themselves because alcohol is legal, are we to shoot all of our alcoholics and addicts?

Are they allowed to register high blood alcohol level, call a relative, ask to drive the guy home, let him or them pick up the car in AM, and later, yes, slap him with a fine and mandatory AA visits? Make him pay, make a year of AA visits miserable for him, but not dead.

I am not blaming the officer. I am thinking that deescalation is not taught well, probably, because too often people respond with violence to show of force. It is human nature.

And then the city pays to all the victims. Because drunk driving is a mistake. Sleeping in the driveway...I’d expect the guy to be in the ER, not in morgue.

Again, not blaming this concrete officer. I think that there are ways out before it turns deadly. They always need to be explored. Because the guy...mom died a year ago, daughter turned 8, so he drank too much. Human factor.

He was over the legal limit and was driving his car. That is a DUI.

Besides, who gets drunk by celebrating their 8 yr olds birthday? That doesn't even make any sense.

Why is the officer being criticised for politely and respectfully doing his job and arresting a drunk driver? . He has to protect all the drivers on the road. So if he finds a drunk behind the wheel of his car, he is lawfully allowed to arrest the driver, and the driver can go to court and figure it out.

ALL of us are subject to arrest for drunk driving.

I am sad that Mr Brooks died. That is a terrible outcome. I just cannot put the blame on the officers for this tragic ending. They are people. They spent 27 minutes with this man, who was acting cooperatively, pleasantly and the officers had no reason to believe there was going to be any violence.

Suddenly, when he was told he failed the sobriety test, he became combative and took the cops by surprise. At that point, the cops are in overdrive, because he is grabbing at their holsters, trying to get their weapons, etc.

The cops are not in de-escalation mode at this point. They are in self defense mode. They shouldn't have to defend themselves in a physical fight, just for making a lawful arrest of a drunk driver.

We are now saying that a suspect who is being arrested, can punch and kick and grab the officer's holstered weapons and point them at the cops, and it is still the cop's fault if the suspect dies as a result.

What if he was in church that night? None of this would have happened. I mean, we can go on and on, and that's fine with me but, the facts are...
He did turn and tazer the officer. The cop had no clue what he would have done. He's not a mind reader, he's a cop. And as a cop it's his job to protect himself and the public The guy was a loose cannon at that point and there's no telling what he may have done, nor does it matter. He didn't get that chance.
It doesn't matter how often suspects run full stride downtown, going on a rampage. What matters is it does happen.

Its expensive and causes mistrust.
What causes mistrust is when people don't follow lawful orders. The more people that don't follow, the more mistrust there is.
Expensive I agree. Expensive to the reputation of law breaking citizens, because all this is going to do in the end is to create stiffer penalties for those that break the law.
If you think that America is going to somehow cave to a bunch of law breaking thugs, again, tell me exactly how.

Justin Timberlake Pays Tribute to Rayshard Brooks With Heartbreaking Picture

"As a dad, this photo hurts. #RayshardBrooks was a father of three girls...1, 2, and 8 years old. He should not be dead," the performer wrote. "Neither should #RiahMilton, #DominiqueFells, and #RobertFuller. This week, these four innocent people became victims of racism, violence, and intolerance. And we're still waiting for Justice for #BreonnaTaylor. I'm heartbroken for their families and for this country."

Timberlake continued, "The system needs to change... it has repeatedly shown us that Black people in America are not safe. I'll follow up with more resources and ways to help. Continue to SAY THEIR NAMES. #BlackLivesMatter."

Jamie Foxx responded in a comment, "God bless you JT. This hurts my heart. I appreciate and commend you for speaking out Over this. It means the world."

Billie Eilish also spoke out about Brooks' killing, writing on her Instagram account, "Man F--K. watching this video made me so f--king angry. F--K THIS S--T. JUSTICE FOR RAYSHARD BROOKS. F--K THIS S---------T. #justiceforrayshard !!!! WHY ISNT EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT THIS??"
I wonder if Justin Timberlake knows about Rayshards arrest and conviction for Child cruelty, and domestic violence and kidnapping?

It really bothers me the way everyone is playing up his fatherhood and his being a dad to an 8 yr old. As if the officers he was assaulting aren't fathers, and didnt want to go home to their families either.

Here is what I think. Had Wendy workers woken him up and fed him, they’d still have their diner.

Seriously, how did he end up near Wendy’s? I think that he got too drunk and did not eat enough so he got hungry. So he drove to Wendy’s and fell asleep in that driveway.

(Another option - that he already ate there - but that means, he’s a client. It is usually easier to deal with clients, send out the same server to talk to him).

Feeding him would have served several purposes, but I bet all of them would still have jobs today.
I totally agree with you. He got too drunk, became hungry, drove there alone, and got in line at the drive through. He passed out (not fell asleep) before he even got to the speaker to put his order in. The story he gave the police about his car being parked there, his girlfriend dropping him off was all one lie after another meant to persuade the police he hadn't been drunk driving.

soon there will be martial law if Mayors, etc stop backing the blue.
"(Brooks) did not seem to present any kind of threat to anyone, and so the fact that it would escalate to his death just seems unreasonable," DA Paul Howard said today.''

He attacked a cop, took his taser, and then pointed it at him. And that's not any kind of a threat?

Cops are expected to stand there like dummies and let people spit on them, scream profanities at them, and throw bottles filled with concrete at them. And now they're expected to stand there like a dummy and let a criminal shoot them with a taser.

Or else.

The district attorney needs to take off his 3 piece suit and get out there on the streets and do what these cops do for a week and let us know how that goes.

This reminds me of Baltimore....anyone else? Thank God my son and his wife will be out of Atlanta soon...hopefully before the city burns and the Army is brought in. He moved from on campus to off campus housing- Concealed carry application is in.

The cops here are paid less than I am ( and I make little)- I sit at a desk and can hang up on rude people. They can't spit on me, injure, or kill me. Glad we have little crime. Our criminals aren't stupid- 98% of people have firearms in their home
