XVI. Nicholas Kassotis Trial — SIGNAL AND MOVING
Nick and Mindy mostly communicated via Signal text messages; only one phone call occurred after Mindy’s death. They moved their belongings by packing and using a vehicle, possibly an SUV. Only a few baby items were present, some given by the witness. A break was requested and granted.
XVII. Nicholas Kassotis Trial — VANISHING ACT
Mindy’s dad, Frank Mebane III, testified that Nick claimed to need security due to secret Microsoft work but never showed proof. Frank had to leave the house daily during Nick’s “work hours” and text via Signal to return. Nick and Mindy said they were changing names to “Stark” for safety; Frank saw packages and a briefcase with that name.Frank never met coworkers, security, or saw surveillance footage after a visit from Nick’s father. He had hip surgery Nov 30, 2022. Last saw Mindy just before Thanksgiving (Nov 23), looking very unwell. When he returned from Hilton Head that Sunday, Nick said she was hospitalized for blood pressure. No hospital name was given. Mindy was never seen again.
XVIII. Nicholas Kassotis Trial — CROSS & CLOSE
Defense highlighted Frank Mebane’s financial expertise and intelligence, arguing he still believed Nick and Mindy's claims despite being skeptical. Frank admitted Mindy, a bright woman, introduced him to the Signal app, and both told him to stay out of the house noon–3 p.m. daily — leaving a window where he couldn’t confirm who entered or if Mindy received medical visits. He never saw death paperwork or questioned why Nick didn’t sue the hospital. Frank confirmed Mindy said the name change to “Stark” was for security but couldn’t recall exact reasons. Final testimony ended with court adjourned until 8:45 a.m. tomorrow.
