Wow, just found out some info about this. Nothing much more other than what is posted. Would like to hear what the presser was.

A person that I deal with on a business level has an employee that is very close kin to the victims in this case. ( not sure if I can say the relationship)

Not sure what more I can say till I hear what was said at the presser. Only know of 2 things that I haven't read here but may have already been posted. I will have to read back, I'm at work right now and want be able to till after 6pm.

I couldn't hear all the questions during press conference, but I think someone ask him if Mr. D was decapitated before or after dead and the sheriff replied he thought post mortem. Did any of you hear that?

How absolutely horrific.

I can't wait until there is an arrest. I definitely agree with the consensus that this is a personal attack of sorts. Sounds like someone w/ extreme rage, possible drug addicted, or specific hate for the victim (and wife.) I was wondering what statement the perp. was trying to make with a decapitation - especially after reading this:

Preliminary autopsy results are expected Thursday in the death of a Putnam County man whose decapitated body was found Tuesday morning in his garage on Lake Oconee.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said there was no blood splatter pattern found, which means severing the head was not likely the cause of death of 88-year-old Russell Dermond, whose 87-year-old wife, Shirley, disappeared without a trace

Definitely sounds like a trophy or "proof" that a crime was committed (possible hit.)

I am definitely interested in the family dynamics at this point. Also curious about the neighborhood and any potential guests, staff or employees of the couple (housekeepers, maintenance, lawn, etc.) Just so rule out everything.

Rumors running through the community that the woman’s headless body was found and Sill is withholding information are complicating the investigation, he said.

I am in awe.

I heard the words post mortem, so maybe this is what he was referring to?

Just to add:

The Dermonds did not own a debit card and only had a few credit cards, he said.

There has been no sign of activity on their account and no ransom note, so there is no apparent motive for the killing and likely abduction.

Investigators and crime scene technicians from Putnam and Jones counties spent Wednesday processing evidence in the garage of 3,200 sq. ft., $1 million house at 147 Carolyn Drive, on a cul-de-sac near the Reynolds Plantation Great Waters community.

Thursday, they’ll focus inside the house.

“I think it’s fruitless,” said Sills because absolutely nothing is out of place.

Those who knew the Dermonds say they had no outside cleaning help.

“I don’t know how that woman kept that house so clean,” Sills said.

So no debit card and minimal credit cards? Did they keep a lot of cash on hand? And did anyone know?

Do you ever wonder if some of the news is just made up out of whole cloth?

Jane Jetson (cool name btw)----maybe its just bad writing or sloppy writing---Lord knows we have seen it articles and various statements by LE and other connected to MP cases--MOO of course!!!

Yes, I think he did say that but autopsy would have to confirm.

I know this is an awful thought but one that has to be explored: how do we know there wasn't some issue and the wife is the one who killed him? In any crime you work from the inside OUT. What was their relationship really like...where are her friends...why the silence in this case? Did they drive do they hv a car, is her car missing? I have so many questions do to the lack of info in this case. Esp as to who saw them last. Was anyone working on their home? Questions like this.

Cherry----totally valid thought-and yes, work from inside out---I think the sticking point is that he was beheaded and the head is missing-and an 87 year old woman would not have the strength to perform such an act

The sheriff's statement was weird. DUH what is significant with a house being "immaculate". All he had to say was the house was not ransacked and nothing was out of place. I would guess that most people in their late 80s cannot keep a big house spotless unless they have lots of helpers. Had the cleaning help been there that day?
just occurred to me---to make the killer relax? no evidence to be found b/c the killer/s destroyed it?

and God help me but--what sort of implement was used to do this??????

I totally agree. Wonder if either M/M Dermond said something to someone that ticked them off. IMO this is a retaliation crime, showing power over these two individuals.

I have a theory -- just a theory, and kind of a crazy one at this point, but: What if the perp/s were looking for someone else and thought this couple would be key to finding that person ... could be why the one death/grizzly mutilation and the other half of the couple taken away ...because they are hoping to use having her to get information/be led to someone else.

This is all really horrible.

If Mr. D was beheaded postmortem there would have been less blood.
(The heart wouldn't be beating, therefore no blood beating out of the body. sorry)
BUT there would still be blood.

coming from water?? A boat someone would hear-so maybe (and creeping myself out) came scuba diving?

But there are many boats about on the lake, probably wouldn't be paid much attention at the time.

Wonder if there are any mentally unstable residents in their neighborhood, or mentally unstable people they knew. This brings back memories of Dr & Dr. Sutton (elderly UGA profs) being killed in Athens, GA back in the late 1980s. The murderer killed 3 other people in Athens before they caught him.

omg----wth????

Yes, in August 2000, if we researched correctly. If you go back in the thread to last night's postings, you'll find where someone linked a 2006 document where the son's killer was trying to get a new trial or something similar ... and some discussion surrounding that.
