Tax records show their garage is attached to the house. Strange though. They have 2 large areas both color coded as garages but the square footage doesn't add up. Still they both are attached to the house at least in the sketch in the records. The strange-shaped 2nd garage space might be a hobby room, shop?

That's true Backwoods. Still I wonder about the Saturday paper not brought in. Mr. Dermond's clothing would be very telling. Pajamas? Dressed for the party? Since her id, purse, etc were still in the house at least she hadn't headed out yet.

Is this true about the Saturday's paper not being brought in? I thought it was only released that Friday's crossword was done but not Saturday's.

I do remember also reading that Saturday's mail was still in the mailbox. I wonder what time the mail carrier comes by their home.

I waited until I read the whole thread and since I didn't see an answer, I'll give you mine.

As I mentioned earlier, I have been to about four houses in Great Waters and ten or so in the original Reynolds Plantation development. Now I have not been to the Dermond's house, but every single place I have been to has had detached garages.

They are usually 3 car or larger and are set at an angle on the driveway catty-corner to the main house. (Remember, this is a lake front property and no one wants a garage visible from the lake)

Since the garage is detached, there is a normal type door on the side which runs on a [usually covered] sidewalk to the mud room entrance. Guests come through the front door.

Most of these garages are large enough that the guy can set up his hobby next to his cars. Most had woodworking stuff. Meaning..."decapitating" tools could very well be right there in the garage. No need to necessarily bring them with you.

My guess is that the poor man was taken in, or just in front, of his garage and the slight movement was to hide him behind the parked cars. Since there is (more than likely) a side door, no reason to have to run under a lowering garage door to get back out.

To touch on a few things I read on the thread along the way:

This is a long, relatively thin, finger shaped peninsula sticking quite a ways into the lake. The subdivision takes up ALL of the land. The only vehicle-capable way onto the peninsula is pass the guard station. No way there are campers anywhere near there.

No way there are drifters.
No way there are gangs.
No way there are meth heads.

As unreal as it may seem, these scenarios are the least likely to have happened in this puzzling case.

BBM

Well you have ruled out drifters, Meth heads and gangs. So, that would mean the perp(s) were known to the Dermonds, correct?
Is that what you're thinking? Just trying to clarify.
Who do you think did this horrible crime?? Please share your thoughts and insights. TIA

I was thinking it was mail that was left and not the newspaper also. I wonder if their Saturday mail delivery runs a little later than m-f, mine is a diff mail carrier on Sat and is always much later than weekdays, not sure if that happens anywhere else.

This is public record so should be ok to post?
Here is the sketch.

http://qpublic7.qpublic.net/cgi-bin/ga_putnam_sketch.cgi?parcel=R&building=8560

It is long and too skinny for a car. Just guessing it was his man cave, tools, lawnmower, and extra storage.
Good thoughts on the paper. It could have been at the mailbox in one of those tube things.

Thanks for the link, it's good to have a better idea of the home. The color coding for a open porch and a garage are almost identical so I don't think that is a second garage but rather an open porch.

From the pics of the back of the house that I have seen the top of the diagram matched it. That would make that long skinny area on the front side of the house. That 8' notched out area at the top of that section would probably be a recessed area for a set of double entry doors. Of course I am just guessing.

Strange mine is just the opposite....LOL! Very, very late afternoon M-F but around noon on Saturday that is if I get any at all. With all the junk mail arriving daily we find it odd that about every other Saturday is the only day we don't have anything in the box.

Why were LE so quick to say they must have entered from the lake? A local resident or someone already inside the boundary of the guarded gate could be the perp. What did they find to rule anyone local out do fast?????

That's a very good question. I agree that someone already in the gated community could be the offender. At this point, I am not sure what to think. I really don't think this was a Mafia hit or gang initiation, though. I am leaning more towards a drug fueled perp(s) or a serial killer in the making. jmo

Thank you! Authorities feel if Mrs. Dermond is in the lake Saturday would be the time at which gases in the body would be bringing her to the surface. That's just awful!

Also, someone who accompanied the vigil with the Dermonds' neighbor made a strange comment:

Dermond family friend *** ****** said he drove to the vigil with the couple’s next door neighbor.

"She's got to get over it, she's just got to get over it security around her home. It’s tough, it’s tough,” ****** said.

I think I would be fine with security around my home if my neighbor had been decapitated and the wife was missing. Maybe I'm misinterpeting the statement. Maybe she's scared and doesn't want to live there any more. Strange case indeed.

I followed another case where a lake was a huge topic of contention. At this point in the case, I would be hesitant to rule out any point of entry to this crime. The picture of the entry with the guard had 3 vehicles entering at once and this was 2 days after the crime. Why not an officer at the gate querying anyone entering or leaving? Any innocent person would not protest such a tactic, right? As of Saturday, the house was still roped off with yellow tape including the pier and boat.

Do we know of any similar (minus a beheading) crimes being committed in the area? Rapes, break-ins, robberies, attempted assaults. . .

*sigh So many people had access to the lake, groundskeepers, housekeepers, etc. Again it seems the perp or perps are a good 2 to 3 days ahead of LE.

Also, thinking of Jessica Ridgeway, this could be a younger perp or perps deciding to kill someone just to see what it felt like and if they could get away with it.

I wholeheartedly agree with your statement "A local resident or someone already inside the boundary of the guarded gate could be the perp." This is why I feel any the people live there are fooling themselves if they believe it had to be an outsider.

I'm so sad that Mrs. Dermond is still missing on this Mother's Day. I hope she will be found soon for everyone's sake.

Wondering if the Dermond's lent money to someone that worked for them or was friendly with them (neighbor). If Mr Dermond was putting on the pressure to finally pay back, the person may have killed them. They may have made it look like a drug killing or removed the head if a bullet was fired so as to not leave evidence. JMO

I am answering my own question regarding attached/detached garage. Putnam County Tax Assessor website has what they call Sketch Building and it shows garage is attached to the home. I should have referred to this site before asking question, sorry you all.

I grew up fishing and camping on Oconee and Sinclair. I now live two hours to the East in very rural GA. My dad is retired in his 70s and still has a house at Sinclair we go to a lot still. This thing is really bugging me and hits close to home.

IMHO this is meth related. if not meth...mob. Meth makes people crazy and meth is an epidemic as we all know in the rural south, but everyone, even good people have skeletons no one knows about....this is a tough one...

Since it's been reported that the Dermonds had "cars" or "vehicles" (plural), I'm kinda assuming that both of them were still driving...? We don't know for sure, though, right? (I know the photos came from driver's licenses, reportedly, but one or the other of them COULD have made a decision not to drive any longer, even if they still had a valid license.)

If both WERE still driving, I wonder if they ever went places separately? Just wondering if this might be a scenario where one, or both, were out -- one was home or came home and encountered the perp/s -- then the other came home.

I'm hoping maybe LE has been able to find out more about the Dermonds' activities in the relevant days -- when they were out and about. I think last we heard Russell had been seen shopping on Thursday and walking on Friday...? Has there been anything about Shirley's activities in the days leading up to the murder/disappearance?

One article I read had quotes from one of Shiley's duplicate bridge players saying she had played bridge on Tuesday. I also read she played bridge twice a week for the last so many years and she was currently the President of their bridge club. Duplicate bridge is serious bridge (not a bunch of ladies playing in friends homes).

I think the larger part of garage is for two cars and the smaller part is for a golf cart.

Good article. Scroll down for pictures. Also see comments fron RMJ.

I wonder what that is on table in picture 3

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/05/08/elderly-man-beheaded-wife-missing/8840037/

Interesting. The video says both the cars were in the driveway, not the garage. That makes me think this might have happened Friday night, before the Dermonds went to bed. I would think most older people would move the cars into the garage at the end of the night. I know my father would, because his cars are much nicer and newer than mine, and he wouldn't want sap to drip on them, which happens in very tree covered areas.

Maybe someone was waiting for Russell in the garage when he went in to open the garage door and put the cars in for the night.

Perhaps it was the cars stationary in the driveway for so many days and nights that led neighbors to think something was very, very off.

I also have a quick question to some of you sleuths out there. Does anyone have any information on the time period between 1970-1990 for the family?

I have researched and turned up almost nothing. I know at some point during that time the family lived in Phoenix, Arizona. And while the papers state Russell worked for General Time Corp, a company that owned Westclox and Paul Thomas clocks, as a director of something similar to IT, my research showed that the division he worked in is considered military defense. If he were with the same company and moved to AZ, he would have then been working for either Talley Systems or Dynamic Science, as they merged with GTC around that time. Both of those deal in military defense but beyond that, it's a little over my head. I do know one of the two of them had a mention of NASA and the Apollo missions. Not saying it's in any way related to the case, it's just that the rest of these people's life is squeaky clean. Something must have happened out there; their eldest came back from the experience a total criminal.

From 1980 to 1999 they owned a house in the Huntcliff Neighborhood in Sandy Springs.

I don't trust all these internet site who place people at certain addresses. For example: my ex-husband never lived at the current house I purchased, but websites have him living here and junk mail in his name comes here.

It is long and too skinny for a car. Just guessing it was his man cave, tools, lawnmower, and extra storage.

The 25 ft rectangles at both the top and bottom of this sketch are outdoor patios. They wouldn't have an enclosed shed or man-cave that blocks the view of the lake or the view of the house from the street side. The purple rectangle at the top also labeled "patio" is the screened-in porch (probably screened-in at a later date from when this sketch was filed with the tax records). You can see this and orient your view of the house from the many aerial photos taken by the news media. The screened porch, (gray-labeled) patio and (red-labeled) decks all face the lake. The garage is on the street side of the house along with a front porch and the front door (see the 8 ft. indent on the open porch - this is either double doors or a front door with side lites. So anyone messing around the garage area would have been well hidden from the lake side and any boat cruisers that might have seen anything, as well as probably being screened from the neighbors by all the trees...

(My own thoughts and opinions from being in real estate and reading these sketches for years)
