Does anyone know how much experience, Sheriff Sills has had investigating homicides?

I honestly don't know. I remember one only because it was near our lake home but that was in the late 90's. Bank manager shot during a robbery and died later. That perp was caught within hours, IIRC.

Note USA Today box out front.

Sorry....This is a mute point. I just called USA Today subscription department and the Dermonds got their paper delivered by carrier. Easy...I asked if they delivered to 145 Carolyn Dr (vacant lot next door), would I get it in the mail or by carrier. The woman looked it up and said "by carrier, because the residents at 147 Carolyn Dr had it delivered by carrier but they no longer get the paper."

My bad, Mr. D didn't buy the newspaper outside the Huddle House.

BBM

He may be basing this assumption on the fact that Mrs. Dermond had begun work on her crossword puzzle from Friday's newspaper, as her son Keith Dermond has said she was so talented at doing, but which may or may not prove to have been done by the victim on the last day of her life. That's because the sheriff now believes that the victims knew their killer, so he or she may be attempting to throw off the investigation timeline by having completed that daily newspaper puzzle.

This is really a “way out of the box” idea and it comes from the fact that someone was interested in footage from the Huddle House.

Did the perp did do some of Friday’s crossword puzzle to throw off the timeline. How could this be accomplished? If even doable, would it even be something worthwhile enough to make a difference as far as who LE would look at? What would be gained verses the risk?

…..You have a crossword puzzle that according to the article above, SD had begun work on in Friday’s paper. You also have someone supposedly asking about security footage at the Huddle House on Lake Oconee Parkway on Greensboro which is close to the Old Salem Boat Ramp. Huddle House has a USA Today newspaper box [Scroll down]

LE is placing the crime time-line between Friday May 2 after the paper was delivered and before Saturday May 3 before the next paper delivery or at least the Derby party. This is based on the fact that SD would have had time to do some of Friday’s puzzle, and the fact that she was recovered in “everyday” clothes and not dressed for a party and that Saturday’s paper was not brought into the house.

We know the D’s received their paper by carrier(s) each day. What we don’t know is what the delivery time is. We know the papers are also placed in the sales boxes outside businesses. What we don’t know is what time. We also know that the answers to Fridays puzzle would be in Saturdays paper. There is also an on-line version of the same puzzle that is in the paper. When is that available? When and can you view the completed puzzle on-line?

How early could someone get a print copy or even digital copy of Saturday’s paper to fill out Fridays puzzle with to be able to alter the crime time-line? The D’s are killed Friday morning, the bodies are moved and then disposed of Friday night, and Friday’s puzzle is done with the answers in Saturday’s paper.

Go ahead  and :poke:. I can take it.

A few days ago in thread #4, I posted that when there is a Black Bear sighted or suspected in a neighborhood, a 'Beware of the Bear Alert' is immediately issued by public safety authorities. Yet, when there is a violent predator/s preying on the elderly in a neighborhood. There is only denial, silence, & misinfo, imo...

Thanx Lakeoconee and Carolinapeach for sharing this eyeopening msm article;

'Sheriff Howard Sills Accustomed to Spotlight'.. by Christian Boone - AJC

As most are aware, I am very cynical when it comes to GA Good Ole Boy Sheriff's heading up high profile homicide cases...

But, Wow, I'm very impressed.. Guess, we now know now why Sheriff (T rex) Sills refused to request the additional resources of the Georgia Bureau of Investigators in the Dermond investigation, imo... When Sheriff Sills needed the GBI's resources during the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors investigation. The GBI's leadership, which is very political, hung him out to dry, imo...

If this is indeed the reason for this decision by the honorable Sheriff Sills.. I sure wish that he would reconsider utilizing their very valuable investigative resources; the highly trained and experienced GBI Special Agents..

USA Today is not published on Saturday

I would assume the previous days' was in the recycle bin to compare handwriting

I would assume if different handwriting, they would process for fingerprints

Video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2Y-6UFV_jI

Of note is the sheriff's answer to the question at 6'45" in the video about the possibility of the corpse floating to the point of discovery. He replied that he didn't think so, instead of saying it was not possible.

Is that reply a contradiction to his declaration that the body was "placed" specifically there at Riley Shoals? And his statement at one point using the phrase, "..., or in the vicinity."?
???

BBM, do we think maybe he should have said and maybe MEANT to say, TRANSPORTED there?

I read another recent article that said the body had gotten tangled in the trees in the lake or something

Tomkat, I think we have all compared the Dermond abduction/murder/decapitation case with many other cases past. The abduction/murder/decapitation of John & Irene Bryant(10/2007-NC) is the only case that comes to my mind..
Found Deceased NC - John Bryant, 79, & Irene Bryant - NC
http://www.thenewsobserver.com/articles/2007/12/25/news/news02.txt

If the perp/s had taken both S & R Dermond and disposed both of their bodies in the lake w/o leaving any signs of a crime. They would have been considered as only missing persons/adults. Other than a Silver Alert being initiated, the investigation would have had much less; urgency, investigative resources dedicated, and would have simply been a mystery...
Adults have the right to go missing..

The decapitation of RD and his missing head, combined with the torso being left in the garage changed not only the urgency of the investigation, but the horrific nature and magnitude of the crime.. Seems, the perp/s would have had to know that this would be the case.

The brazen perp/s were making a statement, while challenging authorities, imo.. Why?

YES, and WHO? would leave such a statement, what kind of predator/perpetrator?

Thanks! Just pondering!

I think your friend is indeed right.

I am an 'out of the box' thinker myself and that is the way I have always looked at cases. It has served me very well over the years. I don't ever automatically assume that the murderer will be the one the majority normally suspects. I especially don't do that if I have seen no evidence supporting that theory.

Imo, the suspect in this case will be far from being the 'usual suspect' just like it wasn't in many other cases.

FoxFire, can painfully tell us all from their own experiences from searches they have been on in high profile cases where much valuable time and effort was wasted on what police perceived to be the 'typical' suspects.

In some of those tragic cases some of the victims may have been able to have been saved. LE too can get tunnel vision and sometimes it has even cost victims their lives.:(

The perfect example of that was when LE was convinced that the Lunsford family was involved and spent countless hours/days grilling them day after day trying to get them to confess to something they were never guilty of in the first place. Meantime for three long agonizing torturous days Jessica was right across the street right up under LEs nose being tortured, and raped repeatedly by Couey. At that time the majority of the internet was also certain a family member was involved. And it has happened in countless other cases as well.

If this person is ever caught and brought to justice he will turnout to be anything other than typical or the usual suspect.

IMO

and yet it seems everyone is still thinking INSIDE the box??

This has been in the news prominently, and was on the news very quickly to alert the community IMHO. Is your issue that the police are stating that the Dermonds were targets vs. a serial killer is perhaps on the loose, and that they (FBI/local authorities) should state that is a possibility when they don't believe that to be true at this point?

I think if the motive was money both would have been killed and left in the home.

I also think nothing was taken from the home so I am thinking that means both had their wallet and purse undisturbed.

This one is certainly strange especially with all the movement involved in the killings and where the bodies were moved and left.

This killer (s) took quite a few risks in everything that was done.

A person that takes chances is dumb and lucky or very smart!

I agree HB!

ATL, imo, at this point I truly do not believe they know for sure that the Dermond's murder/s wasn't a predator..JMO, due to the indicators.
ATL, an aware informed citizenry is a much safer citizenry, imo..

Thanks CPeach and Lakeoconee

interesting article, a great guy and smart and honest, but can he do it??

I PRAY TO GOD he can!!

also noted this in the article

Believing that the cult was dividing Putnam County on racial lines, with his office in their crosshairs, Sills turned to state and federal officials. The FBI responded, but the state did not.

2 THINGS,

the CULT was mentioned by RD son as a possible suspect

and, interesting SILLS called on the state THEN, but couldn't GET ANY HELP from them
