I doubt the elder Dermonds had anything to do with illegal activity. The only "law" person I've discussed this case with believes it was a hired hit. We all have our own ideas about why...

Talked to a cop friend today, got on this discussion

I dont' really know what happened to the D's JUST SO YOU KNOW

but wanted to point out what he said about cartel, the beheading of course, and we know Sills has said not professional

But what I got from my friend is, people are hired to hit and get paid hundreds of thousands and so they dont' need to rob, they also aren't professionals so may not appear professional, just dirtbags, they got their money when they got paid for the hit,

i thought was a good point but also a [link removed] may want more too, but no one robbed them that we know so sounds like the intent was to KILL THE D"S and nothing else

There are many people in the middle ga area (dr's lawyers etc) who live in million dollar homes who have been also mixed up with drugs or cartel, people NO ONE would ever suspect

Anyway, not pointing this in that direction, but was interesting info from LE

All I know is someone came there TO KILL THEM, it seems, nothign else

While I respect your friend's opinion, I highly doubt the D's were involved in any type of illegal activity. That being said, I can agree that their murders might have been a 'hit'. I don't know though. For some reason, I am still leaning towards the perp(s) doing this to keep the D's from revealing a dirty little secret. All is jmo and nothing else.

Thanks Bessie for prompting us that many are finding the excessive use of smilies in this thread rude and highly disrespectful to the deceased couple. It takes a little prompting to make us all remember that family and friends and those that are close to heart with this case.... it hurts seeing folks doing such.

I'll take a few days off myself and discontinue what I think may perhaps be most hurtful that you didn't even mention....which is coming up with theories that aren't based on the evidence. I have been doing it much and know for friends and family to read what we have been discussing - it must stab them in the heart.

Whatever happened, the Dermonds never did anything to deserve the cold and heartless way they were treated. We might not agree on theories and ideas, but I believe we can all agree on that. I hope and pray that whomever did this to them is soon caught and brought to justice.

IIRC, Sills did say they were not in this program. I have no idea where to look for it. IMO, the Dermonds had nothing to do with illegal activity.

Hmmm... I was under the impression that some posts were hinting that possibly the Dermonds' son (who was murdered) wasn't actually dead, but rather, that HE was in the witness protection program.

While we're all trying to make sense of some of this here, I thought back to some crimes I've read about in the past. Here's a different theory, based on the minimal facts we've been given, and some sorts of difficult to solve crimes in the past. Just spit-balling here, but the D's had some lovely real estate. Some people in such areas are cash/liquidity hoarders -- they may keep a fair amount of their assets in an in-house safe, or perhaps in something like an off-shore, or old-school Swiss account. (Please note, I'm not saying that they were this way and I've seen nothing to suggest that they were.) But perhaps some professional criminals believed that there was such a house in the neighborhood, and invaded their home -- perhaps making a mistake at the address. Perhaps said perps believed that RD was not likely to give a location of his safe, or its combination, or the secure account number of their account(s). And so, they decided to kill RD dramatically to get SD to divulge the information...but found that it was unsuccessful, perhaps because there was no such information to divulge.

And perhaps this was all based on misinformation -- the perps got bad information, or they got the wrong house, but did not realize it.

Although I have thrown this out, I don't necessarily think it's the case. But crap like this (hitting the wrong house) happens (more often with houses suspected of holding drugs than cash, but still, it happens). If this has been suggested before, please forgive me for wasting your time, but I think we need to consider some improbable motives for such an improbable crimes (though I don't think that all improbable motives are equally improbable -- JMO).

Sheriff Sills is assuming the Dermonds knew them, and with some evidence (maybe the unlocked front door or no signs of struggle or ransom note) is maybe what supports his assumption?
What other evidence could there be to support that?
The article does use the word "assumption."
What if it was really was someone they did not know and they were targeted, and it was the wrong house?
An assumption is just that, assuming.....

Read a few weeks ago about the drug cartel out of ATL I believe, dont' recall all the details, but it's alive and well

The d's previously lived in ATL, I looked it up on google, it was right on the street, a mound as the front yard to privatize the front of house, no protection from anyone really, overlooking the chatahoochee

They likely felt much more protected in RP

Playing bridge, playing golf, walking, never really "knowing" the neighbors? As stated by one neighbor who knew them but not well. Did they have close relationships or were they helpful superficial ones so no one would get close enough? Good disguise anyway.

Why did no one contact them until Tues, and it was the neighbor whom he helped out after surgery or stroke?

they were not rich as son stated, what did son say? BUt how the hell do you do that in a million dollar home? taxes, electric, water, HOA fees, cable, upkeep, who knows what else

Living in a more than "million dollar" home, more expensive than the last, just the two of them, building in their 70's, go figure !

Too much work and expenses, I want a 2 bdrm cabin when I retire

IDK what happened to them or what their life was, but I am not naive enought to believe it can't be so, some try to get out, they are owned.

Someone wanted them dead is all I know or feel very strongly they did
