Welll, if SS or anyone involved can't solve it and there becomes strong suspcicion or something leading to the NC, but they can't prove it or get a conviction, what better glory, with no accountability, there's the satisfaction

then again, if they didnt' and they happen to be reading this..........what satisfaction

The only thing that could get Sills to speak is if his "constituents" rattle his cage about lack of info. I'd like to think of it were my neighborhood or county, I'd be camping out on his doorstep. And Boots, what good is a trophy if you can't share it? And FF, what does the NC get out of this? They can't or aren't sharing either. Is it enough to do this and then keep quiet about it? I'd want Sills to know that I (the NC) had a part in making him unable to solve this. If I had been hired to do this, and it is my job, I'm getting rid of all the evidence, collect my pay and be on my way.

I really think people are getting more demented....

  • #963
Maybe Russell was trying to sell something on Craig's list and.....that is why I'd love to know what was on his computer.(and it appears he logged in at the same time everyday). But I'm sure that's all been researched. (Could the perp(s) erase those discussions on the computer and also on his phone? Would forensics be able to recover that?

  • #964
Then wouldn't you want to place it in SS's bed so he could be sure and find it? It could be in LO. From tomkat's description maybe it is trapped where Mrs. Dermond was found. This is like one of those shell games - except it's where's the head? I kept thinking Search and Rescue would find Mr. Dermond's head when they were searching for the .22 used in a murder case thrown from the bridge into LO.
Thrown off what bridge? Was it near where Shirley was found? Could Shirley have been thrown from the bridge?!

  • #965
Hmmmmm..... I don't know... Sills said she had been placed where she was found so my assumption was that was by boat as LO said - just not from the Dermond's dock. It was Greene county.

Random crime data
The last murder reported in Putnam County was June 10, 2011.
David Brett, 64, was convicted Feb. 23, 2012, of felony murder in the shooting death of Jose Garcia-Castro; Brett blamed the man for the death of a dog left in Garcia-Castro’s care.
Brett was sentenced to life plus five years for the murder and various weapons charges. His conviction was upheld on appeal.

How do they know they were killed with different weapons? What kind of weapon was Mr. D killed with? The beheading is not what killed him, is it? I was under the impression that happened sometime after he was killed.

"The autopsy of Shirley Dermond determined the 87-year-old woman died from “blunt force trauma.” Sills said he still does not have 88-year-old Russell Dermond’s head, but added “I’ve said all along that the only reason to take that head was to conceal something.”
He said forensic evidence backs his belief in the theory, but he would not discuss what that evidence is."

We have speculated the forensic evidence would be gun powder residue found on Mr. Dermond's body. Mr. Dermond was dead it was determined before his head was removed. I'll find a link if you would like?

Dang! I am still looking for the article regarding the search for the .22. Ocean and I discussed it. Said her husband used to do Search and Recovery and would often bump into the people's bodies they were searching for.......

My internet keeps cutting out........

  • #971
Thanks so much, Boots. Since his body was dragged to the garage, I'm assuming if he was shot, it was out in the yard somewhere? And I'm sure they searched the grounds for the bullet. This case just boggles the mind. Why did they take Mrs. D? Why not shoot her, too? I think about this sweet couple every day at some point.

Sheriff: ‘Brutal savage’ probably targeted elderly Lake Oconee couple
By LIZ FABIAN and JOE KOVAC JR., Telegraph staff
May 22, 2014

Sills said he has been working such long hours that at times he has lost track of days.

A hometown boy, he likened the probe’s plodding nature to “plowing hard ground at Rockville with a dull point and a slow mule.”

Even so, he said, “there are things that we’ve found out that I can’t elaborate on.”

[...]

Sills has narrowed the timeline to a 24-hour window between that Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon. Russell Dermond, his head severed, was found dead in his Carolyn Drive garage on the morning of May 6 when concerned neighbors went to his house. The 88-year-old’s head has not been found. His manner of death is unknown.

[...]

The decapitation also factors in to make Sills think at least two assailants took part.

“That takes a little effort to do that. Even if the (dead) person’s not alive. And then we have Mrs. Dermond’s body in the lake five miles away,” the sheriff said.

[...]

Sills would not discuss specifics of what investigators have learned as they have combed the Dermonds’ financial records and background to sniff out potential motives.

But, he added, “it’s nothing random” as best he can tell for now.

Asked what kind of person or people may be responsible for the killings, Sills said, “I would say it was a particularly brutal savage that did this. Whether he did it as a result of self-preservation or he did it as a result of just pure meanness, it takes a certain level of depravity to throw an 87-year-old woman in the lake and cut off the head of an 88-year-old man.”

Everyone is up late tonight! So, contributing more money to the reward fund will help find the perps??? Let's hope and pray this is what it will take.

There is so much information that has been withheld from us, it's getting difficult to speculate...:banghead:

IMHO

Aha! Thanks, FF - so they don't know how Mr. D was actually killed. So the reason for leaning towards his head being taken is because of the bullet, because that could be traced to the owner? Why not shoot her, too? That makes me think she was still alive when they took her to the boat. LO never said why he thinks they didn't arrive by boat? They obviously left by boat, so why wouldn't they come by boat?

Wow, seems like Macon has so much more info than others. I didn't realize that city was close to Eatonton? Foxfire, you must be a computer whiz! I don't think I've ever heard of a case quite like this. I don't give killers enough credit, I guess. SS seems to think she was taken to throw off them off - which did work for 2 weeks. I really think SS should put out more information about the phone records. I do remember he said there were like 760k pings off of one cell tower and that's a lot for a town that size, I would think. If SS could just share something with us, so we know it's being worked on. And I don't get why the GBI isn't involved (egos, leaks..?). I agree with Foxfire on that. Do we have any comments from the GBI about why they are not being utilized?
And yes, I'm up late tonight. My hubby has been out of town for 3 weeks now and I'm lonesome....thanks you guys, for keeping me company! I talk to my cats about it all the time but I don't think they really care very much, haha.

Thanx for the kind words, Happyshoes.. Not a computer whiz, a google whiz.. 'Never, ever misunderestimate an experienced sadistic, malignant psychopath'. They are very creative, calculating, manipulative, and deflective; extremely cagey.. 'They will fool even the most experienced and competent homicide investigators'..jmo

Macon is much closer than you think, happyshoes. Macon is where the MPD & MFD NC members quit the day Dwight Malachi York was indicted. York/NC had book stores in Macon & Athens, and owned a mansion in Athens. They were hired by the Athens Correction Dept. Athens, GA is about the same distance away(50 miles aprox). Seems the NC/York gave the Athens Corrections Dept Commander a $2,000.00 campaign donation. (scroll down @ NC link below)

The GBI refused to comment as to why the Special Agents were not being utilized by SS. "Can't connect the dots, if you don't collect the dots"..

Happyshoes, imo the cell phone pings are likely a dead end. As well planned as the Dermond murders seems to be, and the perp/s being investigative/forensically aware.. The perp/s likely went dark; no cell phone activity, cash, stolen or rented vehicle, boat, etc., imo..

Happyshoes, I luv cats & dogs. K9s rely on their instincts and will communicate with those who will listen. I truly believe this..

Yes, FF - you're probably right about that. So what's next, didn't he say there didn't find anything going back thru financials. Maybe they should get a warrant for all family members financials, too. Maybe some relation has a gambling problem? SS, please give us something!

I love dogs, too, Foxfire, esp German Shepherds. My DIL has 2 gorgeous ones. When we get our next house, if it has room for dogs, I hope to get a couple. They are great at their jobs! Glad there weren't any animals hurt at the Dermonds. I would be twice as mad as I am. Ok, going to hope for news tomorrow.
