''The pair were last pictured together on March 28, 2024, as Hackman was seen holding on to his wife's arm as they grabbed lunch together at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the actor had lived since the 1980s.

Hackman held onto a walking stick while wearing casual attire next to Arakawa, whom he married in 1991, as they made their way to the eatery.

The private couple was rarely seen out in public together, and the last time they attended an event was thought to be at the 2003 Golden Globes, where Hackman was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment."

''Aside from appearances at awards shows, he was rarely seen in the Hollywood social circuit and retired about 20 years ago. His was the rare Hollywood retirement that actually lasted.

In his later years, he wrote novels.

Hackman had three children from a previous marriage, but he and Arakawa had no children together. In 1999 they had adopted three German shepherds, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Hackman told the film magazine Empire in 2020 that he and Arakawa liked to watch DVDs she rented.

“We like simple stories that some of the little low-budget films manage to produce,” he said''.

Gene Hackman was a great actor and appeared in many popular movies. One of my favorite movie scenes was from "Young Frankenstein", where the Monster (Peter Boyle) visits the cottage of the Blind Monk (Gene Hackman).

I usually do not tear up about a celebrity's death, I mean I feel bad about them but Gene Hackman is one actor I've admired for years. I never fail to stop when one of his movies comes up while surfing Netflix. RIP :(
He was a truly great actor! I didn't know his wife was so much younger: I was thinking a suicide pact but why kill the dog? it is a mystery - I hope we get information soon.

The weather in Santa Fe for the past week has had lows in the 30's, so I would imagine a furnace was used to heat the house. I'm suspecting Carbon Monoxide will be the cause.

If this is a murder/suicide I don't think it would be announced that authorities think no foul play was involved.

Another possibility would be Gene passed from natural causes and his wife committed suicide. I guess that would fall under the category of no foul play, but until an autopsy is preformed I doubt LE would jump to that conclusion.

The dog could have perished from lack of food and water depending on how long Gene and his wife were deceased prior to being found. It sounds like they lived a very secluded life and it may have been some time since someone checked on them.

I believe this is Gene’s home in Santa Fe.

At first link click i got the ever so common .... buy the magazine restrictive screen.
Then I tried again, and so glad I did!!!
This house style is just so special...

So how do we connect possible CO poisoning in the open style space and relatively moderate temperatures in Albuquerque....

Same, why the dog? But now I'm thinking about the older guy across the street from me who suicided and the last thing he did was leaving a message for someone to feed his dog. We love our animals and never want them to suffer, especially starve.

Just listening to BBC news and the reporter said it isn't currently thought to be foul play.

Santa Fe County police discovered the body of the two-time Oscar winner, 95, and 63-year-old Arakawa — his wife of 34 years and their dog — on Wednesday afternoon.

No foul play is suspected and no cause of death has been announced.

My first thought was carbon monoxide.

They lived in Santa Fe. About an hour from Albuquerque and higher elevation.

Temps at night can get below freezing, so my speculation is that the heat turned on, something was wrong with the furnace, and CO was released in the house.

CO is lighter than air so it will tend to rise, so if they were upstairs in a bedroom they may have been affected rather quickly. That type of poisoning can happen in only an hour or two but sometimes takes only minutes. (Source: any medical website or CO-alarm website)

A welfare check was conducted at the couple's home after a concerned neighbour called the police, the sheriff's office reportedly told NBC affiliate KOB of Albuquerque.
Concerned that they hadn't seen them for a while or smoke or smell of carbon monoxide? I wonder

Carbon monoxide is odourless.

I'd assume they were concerned they'd not seen them for a while.

If they police were called to do a welfare check, presumably whoever called them told them who it was. So why did it take several hours to identify them? They may have been dead for quite a while.

The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found dead alongside their dog after a neighbor called police to perform a welfare check on them. Police have said that no foul play is suspected and that two dogs survived the triple tragedy.

Sounds like whatever happened, happened suddenly and more than a few days since imo. Likely the dog that passed did so due to starvation or dehydration. Hope the other doggos make a full recovery of that's the case.

Bizarre and baffling and so, so tragic.

At his age a simple case of the flu could be deadly.
But his wife and the dog as well ?
If it was a suicide pact I'd think they would've rehomed their pet first ?
So like some others here I'm guessing carbon monoxide poisoning.. and if they had a detector maybe the batteries expired or it malfunctioned ?
People if you haven't bought one yet -- please get yourself a Co2 detector.
Imo.

Rest in peace Gene, Betsy, and their dog. 😢
