Betsy Arakawa stands in front of Gene Hackman. He is dressed in a suit; she has her hair down and is wearing a blazer with shoulder pads.

Betsy Arakawa met Gene Hackman in the 1980s when she was working part-time at a fitness center in Los Angeles and trying to make it as a classical musician.

Betsy Arakawa, a classical musician and small-business owner who was married to Gene Hackman and helped edit his novels, died on Wednesday with him at their home in Santa Fe, N.M., the local authorities said on Thursday. She was 65. RIP Ms. Betsy :(

sorry, dogs don't eat human pills
Yes, some dogs will eat anything and everything off the floor. Some dogs are so quick they'll grab it as soon as you drop it and others just sniff it out and pick it up when you haven't realized you dropped it. I've had dogs all of my life and they most certainly will eat anything, including non food items.

Is there a link for this ?
My .02 is that it can't be totally ruled out, but ...
Tia.
FWIW: Ive read no foul play but b/c there were no signs of a gas leak, it was suspicious enough to warrant an investigation.
maybe meaning they're just trying to figure out what happened, I'm sure early autopsy findings will shed more light.

Gene Hackman is seen from the side in a dark shirt and white collar.

Mr. Hackman saved one of his most memorable roles for his final years of acting, bringing an irreverence to “The Royal Tenenbaums” in 2001. Mr. Hackman’s antics with his grandsons showed a playful side that was sometimes missing from his earlier films. He also delivered showstopping lines like: “Hell of a damn grave. Wish it were mine.”

"There were no obvious signs of (cause of) death. Their deaths were "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation" due to all of the "circumstances surrounding" the scene, according to the search warrant affidavit."

IMO, that means it's not clear what happened, so it will be investigated thoroughly by police, with an open mind, to determine exactly what did happen.

sorry, dogs don't eat human pills
Sorry, but the best training tip I have ever received is to teach your dogs the words "LEAVE IT!" for that very reason. If you drop medication, dogs WILL go for it. Leave it! is absolutely necessary so that dogs will not scoop up a pill. Now, they might sure spit it out after gobbling it up off the floor, but then again, they might not.

My feeling is that Betsy may have had a medical event and tried to mitigate with taking medications. It was also stated in some articles that her body was more decomposed than Gene's, which MAY have been due to heat from the heater, if it was on. It is not stated what the pills were for, that may offer some clue if she was feeling unwell.
Gene being found with sunglasses and cane in the mud room, and open door, may indicate he was trying to leave the house to go for help but succumbed.

I do not believe in a suicide situation.
So very sad.....

So strange! They said no marks of violence, I guess we have to wait for the medical examiner's report.
He's been in poor health. If it wasn't CO2 poisoning, I was thinking maybe it was a suicide: he didn't want to live anymore, and maybe she agreed to die with him. As for the poor dog, they probably didn't want him to be left alone with their 2 dead bodies, since we know what can happen....
that's just my sense of what may have happened. It's a viable scenario given his age and condition. You never really know what goes on in people's private lives.

Gene Hackman’s wife was found mummified and bloated when the two were discovered dead with their dog in their multimillion-dollar New Mexico home by maintenance workers who hadn’t seen the couple in about two weeks, police wrote in an affidavit.

Authorities said the deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation” after finding the door to the couple’s home was “unsecured and opened” and an open orange prescription pill bottle and pills scattered around the room where Hackman’s wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, and one of their German shepherd dogs were discovered.

Not trying to be ick or anything. Do we know if he was facing outward or inward in the sunroom? To me, that would make a statement as to where he was going. He could have suffered a heart attack if he found his wife deceased and then tried to get help but was too overcome with emotion.
