Gene Hackman dead at 95: Iconic actor and wife, 63, are found dead with their dog at Santa Fe home.

A live dog was found running around. Another live dog was in the bathroom near Betsy's body. The dead dog was found in the bathroom's closet.
If Betsy was disabled or dead and unable to prevent it, it is possible that the dog that was ultimately found dead entered the closet and jumped up in such a way that it closed the door so it was trapped in there (if door swung inward into the closet) or the dog that was found alive jumped up against the closet's door, shutting the other dog in there (if door swung outward into the bathroom). Then, the dog trapped in the closet died of thirst/starvation.

ETA: Never mind, I see news reports that the dog in the closet was locked into a kennel/crate.

And who they belonged too.

I can see Gene's death being a health crisis - heart attack, etc. But Betsy at 64, looked very heathy back in December and is said to be very health concious. For me, that's the mystery.

I don't suspect foul play or M/S, I'll wait for the offical COD.

In that photo (taken when GH was 94, so last year), GH looks thin and somewhat frail, leaning on both a cane and his wife's arm. BA looks fairly healthy, but it is worth noting that she is around the same age (mid-60's) that GH was when he first suffered heart pain and underwent angioplasty. Maybe they BOTH had heart disease and suffered health events resulting in their deaths, one after another and with one attempting to take medication to help but not in time to prevent the event.

I read the whole thread and no one has mentioned this. Why did the 911 caller first say there was two dead bodies, then switch it to one? I know he was nervous but ...

And if he hadn't been in the house, how did he know there were two bodies? He said he could see one through the window. Could he see both from that window? Strange.

I’ve read most of the thread, but not sure I’ve read confirmation that there was no sign of a burglary or robbery. Has it been stated? I realize they said foul play not suspected, but they may have been referring to the state of the victims’ bodies only. I assume there would have been valuables, and possibly cash, in the home. Not that LE would know what those valuables would be, to even know they could be missing.

WHO entered home?

@ekc

Affidavit* does not say "workers" entered home (unless I missed it).

Quote from sheriff** says that one of them, the "security officer," discovered individuals in home. Maybe he meant by looking thru windows, not by entering home.

Net result = IDK if either HOAMCO employee entered home, a bit confusing. May or may not be critical.

Regardless, the SF Co. Deputies went to front door, found it ajar, and entered home.

The quotes from LE:
Affdavit, for searching home, page 3:
"Santa Fe County patrol deputies Javier Barron and Joshua Thomas were then dispatch to location to conduct a death investigation. When Deputy Thomas and Barron arrived, Deputy Thomas indicated he spoke to two individuals(one of which was the reporting party) who found and located the front door of the residence(1425 Old Sunset Trial) to be opened/ajar. Deputy Thomas identified the reporting party (RP) to be a male named Roland Lowe Begay ( /65). Roland advised he works as maintenance work for a company called “Hoam Company.” The other maintenance worker was identified as Jesse Kesler ( /72.)" BBM

Affidavit, page 4:
"Deputy Thomas indicated he asked Roland and Jesse when the last had contact with the homeowners and they both advised it was approximately two (2) weeks prior. Both individuals advised they rarely saw the owners (of the residence) when conducting routine maintenance on the home. Both indicated they maintained contact with the homeowners through text message and phone calls and primarily communicated with the female homeowner identified the deceased female as Betsy Arakawa /61)"

From local news, interview w Santa Fe County Sheriff:**
“From what I understand, there was a gentleman that was doing some pest control work that had gone to the Hackman residence, and he noticed that they weren’t home which was odd, I guess in as far he was concerned. He made contact with the security officer that was there, either patrolling or in the subdivision, and then it was the security officer that went to the house and had discovered the individuals in the home,” Mendoza said." Didn't the 911 caller tell the dispatcher he couldn't get in the house and he looked through a window and saw the two bodies and they needed to get there quickly?

I'm still confused by and of the impression that Gene's body was found near the door that was ajar, yet the 9/11 caller said he couldn't enter the residence because it was locked.

It was a massive house, so perhaps my concept of how things were laid out is wrong.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is very gradual and can primarily show symptoms similar to the flu, but at larger doses, it can cause organ failure and death if fresh air is not introduced quickly. Carbon monoxide attacks the body when you inhale it, and it bonds with hemoglobin much easier than just oxygen, rendering that hemoglobin cell useless as it can no longer transfer oxygen needed for life to the organs.

Gradual oxygen deprivation is very dangerous, as it will cause no pain or severe discomfort, but can make humans and animals doze off to sleep and suffocate while unconscious. Currently, a CO detector is the only safe way to know if your house or attached garage is, for some reason, filling with carbon monoxide and if it is safe for you and your family to reside inside.

I see a whole lot of people speculating about how exactly the two free roaming dogs survived, where they got food, etc. if there wasn't a bag of kibble left accessible or on an autofeeder...

Well, to be blunt, here goes. My mother in law worked for the RSPCA for a few decades, and man's best friend, like cats, loves you to bits, but when they're hungry and you've been gone a few days, you become the kibble.

It isn't disrespectful, it's just nature. And if they did have a bag of kibble accessible, it may not have happened, but it does, with regularity, when there is the unattended death of an owner and time passes.

If the third dog was crated, it likely died of dehydration.

MOO

Yeah, but she had her whole, very long life ahead of her when he did finally pass away, which was getting nearer. I don't think that was it. It was Carbon Monoxide. It will just be a difficult task to prove definitively.
Perhaps she didn’t want a long life ahead of her without Gene. It happens. But, agree, I’m leaning away from suicide and to medical event, or CO.

“A detective noted in the search warrant that deputies did not see any signs of forced entry to the home and nothing appeared “out of place” or missing.”

Did we get clarity on what house the deaths occurred? I thought I read it was in a smaller house than the neighboring mansion.

Great question. I assumed, from pics, that it was the 12 acre property, but they did also own a "more modest" property next door. I don't know which property they were found on.
