BERLIN (AP) — A car drove into a group of people at a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg on Friday, German news agency dpa reported.

The driver of the car was arrested, the agency said, citing unidentified government officials in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

There was no immediate information on whether people were killed or injured.

Magdeburg, which is west of Berlin, is the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt and has about 240,000 inhabitants.

This is god awful!
 


Local government spokesperson Matthias Schuppe said several people had been injured and several may have been killed, Reuters reported, citing public broadcaster MDR.

He was also quoted as saying it was an attack.
I’d be very surprised if the number of dead didn’t settle at 20 or more.
 
Too many of these attacks, they seem to happen on an almost annual basis, surely it is time authorities put up concrete bollards in areas where markets are taking place with not enough gaps to fit a car through or hold them in sports stadiums/arenas etc where a car could not make a difference

It’s a really simple solution. It doesn’t make sense at all that they didn’t do that here.
