THIS DAY IN WEIRD HISTORY.
This Day in WEIRD History — January 9
1493 – Christopher Columbus claims to see
mermaids. They are, unfortunately, manatees. History’s first documented case of “expectations vs. reality.”
1838 – Samuel Morse demonstrates the telegraph… which people immediately fear will cause mass confusion, moral decay, and possibly the end of society. (Spoiler: it didn’t. Mostly.)
1918 – The first
recorded jazz concert in England horrifies polite society. Critics describe the music as “dangerous” and “chaotic.” Parents everywhere nod in agreement.
1923 – During Prohibition, doctors prescribe
alcohol as medicine. Nothing suspicious here. Absolutely no one exploited this system.
1961 – A chimpanzee named
Ham is launched into space and safely returned before any human American astronaut. Ham survives and is rewarded with… an apple and half an orange. Hero.
1977 – The U.S. Postal Service issues warnings reminding people they may
not ship live children through the mail. (Yes, this reminder was needed.)
1992 – A man in England attempts to fake his own death by leaving clothes at the seaside—only to be found later watching his own “search” from a nearby pub.
Bonus Weirdness – January has more reported ghost sightings, hoaxes, and fake disappearances than almost any other month. Cabin fever + long nights = questionable decisions.
