Gun Control Debate #2

Another question if someone can answer. If the age is upped to 21, could an 18, 19 or 20 year old borrow and possess the gun legally without owning it? Say a 19 year old mother of a newborn is being threatened by baby daddy, could she borrow dad's gun and keep it at her house/apartment?
I doubt it..I would imagine licensee would be legally bound to keep his weapon at his own place in a locked gun-safe.. That's just a guess

That's a lot to unpack, bears.

Of course I don't speak for anyone but myself and my perspective, but mentally stable, law-abiding citizens are the least affected by common-sense gun reform, imho.

We all agree we want to keep guns out of the hands of baddies, yeah? Isn't that our common goal?

I feel like anyone in this thread who supports mentally stable citizens owning guns is met with a lot of aggression. I’m going to unsubscribe. For the record, I don’t own a gun, and never even shot a gun. I don’t think teachers being armed is the best solution. But since I do realize that the problem is not the law abiding citizens (who have a right to bear arms), my perspective is not going to be tolerated. Law abiding citizens have no problem with stricter gun laws, because they aren’t the people we have to worry about.

Good luck going door to door collecting 300 million guns from civilians, considering probably more than 99% of them are law abiding and have the right to own their guns.

I hope I didn't come off as rude or aggressive to you!

I know I get frustrated as I support stricter gun regulations and I also support gun ownership, and for some reason some folks don't see how that is possible or something.

I've owned and shot guns, live in a hunting state which relies on tourism including our hunting, I grew up with rifles in the house, I've had deer bleeding out in the garage, etc.

I've been a classroom teacher and don't want teachers to be armed. I'm okay with extra security, but concerned about the cost and wary of the politics of it all.

I'm concerned about stigmatizing mental illnesses further, worried that people will avoid seeking it out even more so...

I know there's common ground somewhere in this conversation. It will take compromise from many angles.

Ideally, imo, more states could also close the "boyfriend loophole" in our federal law.

OREGON PASSES FIRST GUN LAW SINCE FLORIDA SHOOTING, AND IT'S A BIG DEAL FOR SINGLE WOMEN http://www.newsweek.com/oregons-new-gun-law-big-step-single-women-818799

"In passing the bill, Oregon joins a slew of other states—Washington, Louisiana, North Dakota, Utah, New Jersey, Tennessee and Maryland—that have closed or narrowed the loophole. Advocates and researchers are now hoping that other states will follow suit."

ETA: added working link (long day)

Of course. But I am not going to continue further bc I am getting a bad vibe. It IS a lot to unpack. People who don’t live in my country criticizing us, is not something I am okay with. I don’t actively pursue threads or forums other country’s issues, because I know there’s way more to the issue than I can understand as an outsider.

No it was not any of your comments at all. I appreciate your thoughtful and educated comments. Trust me, I DO understand everyone’s perspectives, that’s why it’s so frustrating for me. Because I feel like not everyone here is being considerate of the other side. I completely understand how you understand both sides, because I do as well.

Your concern about mental illness and stigmatizing is my same exact concern.

I appreciate what you and all teachers do. I don’t think armed teachers is the solution. But I do appreciate the intentions of teachers who want to carry to protect their students.

There is common ground. But this is a touchy subject and it’s hard to find that common ground. I see a lot of posts with just links to other people’s thoughts. That’s not what I’m here for. I can google myself. I don’t need 10 posts in a row of links that may or may not be biased. And that goes for both sides of the debate.

Personally, I read a lot of the links and appreciate them. I can read more and engage more with people. Personally, I prefer more depth, factual support, and information, and happen to be a link poster. Sometimes I visit threads here just to get the latest news on certain cases/discussions.

But then again, I'm not most people, either. To each his own and I do understand your point.

I do like to read links as well. But when they are posted with no description or backstory, I probably won’t click them. That goes for any thread or forum. But on this particular thread I’ve seen a lot of links posted with no brief description.

But surely there are studies about how people who live in foreign countries wish their gun laws were more like America's gun laws.

I looked and I couldn't find a single one!

Even more shockingly, there also seems to be no studies about Americans who wish to live in countries without constitutional rights!

Curious and curiouser...

I welcome the perspective of everyone. Including from other countries or the 'other side'
I don't think anyone is less patriotic or bashing to see room for improvement. IMO

The way I like to do MSM links is to take the headline and then select a portion of the article that I find most relevant and copy/paste that so that members have an idea what I'm seeing in the article.

Sometimes I comment on the article, sometimes I'm just posting the link for facts alone.

There's a lot of celebrity's that threaten to leave the United States if they don't get their way politically but for some reason they never leave as promised.

I’ve made it clear I welcome all perspectives as well, since I am not a gun owner and can see both sides of the debate. I have no dog in the fight so to speak, bc I don’t have guns and don’t think I will end up owning any. That being said, the tone of this thread seems to immediately disagree with anyone who posts in favor of our second amendment right. But regarding other countries, if their domestic issues don’t directly effect me, why am I going to go hard?

Right? I had so much hope right before this election that at least some of them would keep their word and leave!

But no one did. Some people just live to complain I guess.

They don't really want solutions, so much as platform to vent...

I don't think anyone has any plans to take 299 million guns. Not a bad idea but our govt is not organized to manage that big a task at this time !!!!!!!!!

They cant figure out to start repairing roads -

according to CNN he is already fading on
the raising the age.

Nothing will happen

I think that’s effective JMO. I don’t like blindly clicking links.. a synopsis or snip is helpful.

The whole point of discussion though is to express your thoughts or opinion. Really these threads seem tame compared to some regarding gun control and second amendment.
I have read some posters from other countries express concern and caring for our many deaths from guns.
They follow our news and can inform us how things work in their countries. I appreciate that they care enough to pop in and post. IMO

Yes I appreciate the concern they have for others in a different country. Thanks to all who are looking out for the US and concerned. I’ll leave it at that bc every time I reply it keeps re-subscribing me ha.
