Gun Control Debate #4

The autos vs. guns argument never works for me although I know the guns rights advocates often fall back on it. But the thing is people use cars all day every day and no one dies. People don't buy cars with the intent to do someone harm. Cars are regulated and safety is legislated.

I totally agree. It's a lazy comparison.

Surprisingly, other countries have freedom of speech and constitutions. They just have better written ones which are not so vague that they can be taken to court to make a judgement to sway it to the politics of the day.

What is going on in Venezuela now? Is the Venezuelan government confiscating guns & bullets? What is happening to the citizens—starvation?

I’m not sure.....I’ve only heard rumors....

Victim identified.

Police have not identified the student but issued this statement Thursday morning: "Detectives of the Birmingham Police Department have been working through the night reviewing evidence, video and statements on the tragic incident that took place at Huffman High School yesterday. Due to their diligent work a person of interest has been taken into custody. Charges are pending a review of the case by the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. Because the charges are pending we will not be releasing any information on the individual in custody. Further information will be released as it becomes available."

Do you think that that would happen in the US if there was gun control?

RSBM.

I read it. I also knew about long before the article was published.

Your concern is very kind, but I like to cover my bases. We have protections in place.

Could you advise what those are? I posted this info on the crimes forum here so it would be absolutley wonderful to know what people can do to protect themselves form this horror.

If you would be so kind to let people know? This is utterly terrifying.

I love my country , and where I live. However many in my state struggle with poverty , I too, struggled, with poverty, when I left home at 18, but there were others who were worse off than me, so I didnt complain. Our elected officials are destroying our education system and teachers are prepared to strike. So I know we have our faults. I also know that other countries do as well. Finally, if it were today, rather than 10 years ago, I'd not allowed my child to travel overseas, even with companions. That is how I feel about some countries today, that I didnt feel that way, 10 years ago. So, it goes both ways.

That is what is so funny because many people here are terrified of the US. I feel there are plenty of safe areas in the US,

I was trying to get a program for high school students here to go to Minnesota for a year abroad, There is no way that I am going to continue with this process. I am thankful it did not get too far. I think I know why now that I felt I was getting too many roadblocks. I think they were too polite to tell me that there is no way they would send a child to an Anerican high school.

Of course not. No prudent person would reveal that to utter strangers on the internet. If you know someone who is vulnerable, help them consult an attorney.

Oh I didn't think she meant revealing all your personal secrets, just to offer some advice? Yikes!

And of course, you know Minnesota has Lake Superior, the largest fresh water lake in the world. Although I don’t think Minnesota has a Superior. That one is in Wisconsin,

Seriously......

What? What are the steps that you advise for people to take to prevent this from happening?

Why would anyone think this is personal?

Agree. Apples =/= oranges.

Autos are also insured, many with liability, and use includes training/certification, licensing, and there are laws against using a car recklessly, while drunk, etc.

Is it illegal to carry or use a firearm while intoxicated? Serious question.

Maybe the point is at least America is better than Venezuela?

Anyone have a current link as to what is really going on in Venezuela with their citizens as it pertains to guns/bullets? It may (or may not) be relevant to gun control, perhaps?

According to the article I posted, everyone is vulnerable and there is nothing you can do about it once they go to court . Not even your family can save you. College professors. People living perfectly fine on their own. The court lets them take you

That’s why estate planning is so important. You need to be proactive, not reactive. My husband and I also have measures in place to make sure we are each protected if life throws us a curveball.

Consult an attorney.

Can we get back on track please?

I think if one reads the article I posted, one will see that this is a whole new ballgame by professionals that get courts to make themselves your guardian. You have no say in it. Your children cannot stop them. They drain your bank account for fees to take care of you. They get doctors to prescribe medication .

It is a whole new legal thing out there.
