Planned Parenthood? So his story about "just finding out" about the baby is a lie.
That visit was quite a revelation. It might be part lie that he "found out" later that the baby was becoming viable soon. I mean, he may have assumed Charli did have the abortion, and what he just found out about was her decision to keep Joshua, that a baby shower was planned, that she'd had a sonogram, all sorts of things happening while here he thought she had an abortion. I can imagine she might have been reluctant to tell him she didn't go through with it, as long as she was not showing.

What was the point of the prosecution with the trees and the maps? I'm 31 minutes in and its still just going over establishing where trees are.

That is where things were found. What things? I don't know. Maybe the jawbone?

An hour in and no information. Just pointing out places on maps with no relevance attached. If I'm a juror you've lost me. I'd be waiting for some smoking gun for all the time spent pointing at a map. If that smoking gun with this witness doesn't come, I'm disappointed of lack of actual evidence. If I'm pretending I'm a juror. I do deem the witness credible, well spoken and on point.

I'll buy that. Would explain his fury. I always go back to the question of why is he so angry and why wait until 5 months?

About where things were found, I heard differently (on the Court Chatter video), and Maui News seems to have it the same way. It was confusing when presented, and I had to listen twice. So here's an extract snippet on that from today's Maui News:
http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/611381/Capobianco-murder-trial-begins.html?nav=5161
The prosecution displayed a photo of the path to Nuaailua Bay, known as "Paraquats" beach, in East Maui, where searchers found Scott's fleshless jawbone, split into two pieces about 6 feet apart, Rivera said. He said clumps of Scott's red hair, her fingertips and nails of her right hand and a body piercing with flesh also were found there.
"Down this path is horror," Rivera told jurors.
He said the clothing Scott had been wearing was recovered there, including her mangled black bra with cuts and punctures, her long black skirt with at least 20 puncture wounds concentrated below the waistband and her maternity blouse with bloodlike stains down the front. Her favorite blanket also was found there, Rivera said.
"And lastly, down this path is the end of Charli's dream of becoming a mother," he said.
Missing from the news article is the part about the maggots. Rivera said the piercing flesh had maggots, and I can't remember what else if any of the clothing, but he said the blanket was just covered with maggots and had a strong stench of death.

I actually found the metaphor of "down this path" coupled with the photo of the actual path/road to be quite powerful and even poetic, chicken-skin when he mentioned her red hair.
The five miles away was the jeans, and the fingertips were at Paraquats with the other bodily parts and her clothing and blanket. PS also found the empty duct tape rolls, jeans, and a jacket, but those were not mentioned, also her shoes haven't been mentioned.

The police searched Paraquats the day after the searchers found the clothes. They didn't release the info about the bone until March, is why we don't know the exact date but more assume it.

Today's thread reads like a Who's on First act. Just saying.

If Rivera would use the microphone provided, there would be no confusion! I was present in the courtroom yesterday and would swear he he said towards the end of his opening statement that the pants were found "along with her fingertips". I think I'm the one that needs to review the Youtube channel. Sorry for the added monkey wrenches.

hey, nothing but thanks from me. You don't have instant replay in the courtroom. I was plenty confused the first time through. Reading the Maui News version was helpful, though as we know they get things wrong too. We all do.

Another interesting factoid in the opening was that two cell phones went out to Keanae and one returned. I am dying to hear if his and her phones pinged in semi-unison up to a certain point.

ETA I also had audio problems today, complete audio shutdown on the app (phone), and low volume audio on the desktop. Then complete streaming lockout until the end of the day.

Oh, and no one has brought up Apo's statement that Steven told a "big lie." And that will be a huge part of his defense, and the lie was to avoid implicating Charli as well as himself. What the heck?

I saw that too! But one of the articles said he told the lie to protect Charli. Protect her from what? Was he going to say they were intimate that night? They smoked some pot? WHAT STEVEN?? What could he possibly be protecting a doting mom from besides himself? I can't stand being in the same room as him.

Over and over in my head is "blunt force trauma", "she HAD a mouth on her" and "bruised hands". My husband says no way Jose changing out a window would give you bruising like Steven had. Engaging in a fight might f--k up your hands and savagely beating a woman that is fiercely trying to protect her unborn baby might cause some bruising too. But a changing out a window? Just stop it Steven.

OMG, when you put all those together, Nikki. WS here talked about the "had a mouth" comment and the jaw. Some speculated she was shot in the mouth. Violence by fists makes sense. What a monster. Clearly he hated her mouth (I think it's clear). Hated it so much he couldn't shut up about it in the media interview. So if this is the answer, arson-commiting scorch is not the explanation. They need to put forth the right theory instead of swimming upstream trying to make the wounds into burns, no?

It must be tough, Nikki. He's coming across on camera as ice cold. No concern for missing Charli and his baby, only for his own predicament; that should stick with the jurors.

What indeed could it be about? Drug deal ran through my mind. Sex, maybe ... but he's already talked about hookups and barslut ... hasn't spared her much.
I wonder if the lie has to do with her following him back, or not. Just because that was the weakest part of his story, losing her lights. That would be a good part of his story to revise, that and his truck repair too. The only reason to confess to a big lie I can think of is to change something vital about his narrative that is damning him. Also Nalu could be part of it, or being seen out there.

I just watched Rivera's opening statement on the youtube channel and it's still misleading. He says "where the fingertips were found at that site" but his entire sentence is referring to both the site where her clothes were and where the jeans found 5 miles away. Agh, so confusing. Giving him benefit of the doubt, I'll go with her fingertips were found near the clothing and jawbone.

So the body piercing is her tongue ring? Did he cut her tongue out? Please say no. :(

It's all horror, and yet I'm with you hoping he did not. Sounds like the dismemberment was paying attention to anything identifying including a piercing. How for the love of all did he manage to lose the items that were culled out to avoid an identification, such that the exact opposite of his intent came to pass?
Agree that the statement is confusing. I'll listen to it again too.
The original news article way back when did place the fingernails with the jawbone and a tooth. I think that was the July 2014 release just when he was indicted, but not 100%.

For replaying Apo's show card of "Steven's big lie" -- go to the 26 minute mark of this video:

Not to excuse the confusion, but Rivera probably thought it was clear from his initial list. Starting at the 7:38 minute mark, Rivera makes the itemized list of what's at Paraquats. The split fleshless jawbone, the strewn clumps of red hair, the fingertips and nails of her right hand lying by a body piercing with flesh still attached, the pool of maggots, the slashed bra, the stabbed black skirt, the bloodstained maternity blouse, her favorite green blanket covered with maggots, the blanket the source of the stench.

The later statement about the jeans (20 minute mark of video) is confusing if you expect "that scene" to relate to the site where they found the jeans.
Quote from Rivera:
"What they did find was Charli's blood on a pair of blue jeans, that was recovered five miles away, practically five miles away, from where Charli's jawbone was located. They also confirmed that the fingertips recovered from that scene belonged to Charli Scott."

The last location he mentioned before "that scene" (where the fingertips were recovered) was where Charli's jawbone was located.
I'm no grammarian, but it's something like a vague referrent that is the culprit. ;-)

The perils of explaining orally to listeners, instead of to readers who can easily go back to the beginning where he lays out what was found at Paraquats. (the end, lol)

Back to SC's big lie, how is Apo going to present this exonerating lie that SC told MPD without putting SC on the stand? Apo cannot testify for Steven.

Thanks Pua. I've been a little harsh on the colloquialism that is Maui, drives me nuts.

I looked up the weather (weatherunderground) and moon phase (moonpage.com) for February 9, 2014 at 9:30pm, for the Keanae Penisula. Steven had very few scattered clouds, a high ceiling of visibility and a moon at 81%. In other words, he had a lot of light. It was dry too, only 61% humidity for the area around Charli's Bridge.
