Horrible Christmas card? You judge

I think that if they think it is funny than who cares? I don't, but everyone has a right to think what they like. No one died. No one was maimed.

Why does everyone have to decide for everyone else what they should think or what is funny??? Some people enjoy laughing at themselves.

Maybe not physically. But I guarantee you that if this picture is in any way evocative of the dynamics in that family, those little girls' senses of esteem and self-worth are already maimed for life.

I saw this weeks ago and it was disturbing then, back when I thought it was JUST duct tape on the mouth. Just noticed the string of lights "tying" the girls up.

Um. That's just downright freaking CREEPY. The silencing was one thing (bad enough) but they're all tied up? Like hostages?

HA HA SO FUNNY.

It just hit me, something at the back of my head that the card reminded me of. The word "hostages" finally brought it to the front.

It reminded me of news images we've seen in the past year of gagged and bound people with other people standing triumphantly over them.

The only thing missing was the blindfolds.

Having grown up in the staunchly conservative deep South, I can attest to this and let me tell you, it takes a lifetime to recover, and some women never do.

I could kind of see the humor in it if the little boy had been bound and gagged also: "Man can't get a moment's peace in his own home for the wife and kids har har har har."

Or if all the kids were bound and gagged and the parents were not.

But what gives the whole thing that little jennie say qua is the mom being bound and gagged while her young son isn't.

I saw this, and admittedly laughed. My dad lived with all women(6 of us) and use to always grouse "can't a man get a moments peace" and use to say "I can't get a word in" and I assure you his stereotypes of us being bossy and talkative didn't harm my sense of self and worth. I too grew up in the Deep South and came out fine. For me, i find stereotypical humor hysterical, I'm a blonde woman and find blonde jokes humorous. I don't think this picture glorifies abuse of women, I think it simply points out the fact the dad and son are outnumbered by their female family members that probably do rule the roost. To each their own.

I view it like you.

Yeah, sexism and silencing women is inexhaustibly hilarious. Even if it was the wife who was the Nobel Laureate to come up with this idea, I can't help but think what a great lesson she taught her daughters. They're going to be great wives for abusive husbands, some day -- or perhaps Duggar-type brides.
It is deeply entrenched, isn't it Montjoy.
Even some women can't see it. :gaah:

This.

Way to train up a little chauvinist. "Stupid wimmin always yakkin. Git me a chicken pot pie!"

Same here. I still have a hard time asserting myself even when someone is very rude or inappropriate to me. I hate that about myself, but I was brought up to put others feelings before my own and to just smile and nod. My non-Southern husbad is ALWAYS telling me to stop apologizing for things. I usually reply "Sorry"..

No wonder I am so outspoken here, lol. I take off the duct tape at WS! Very empowering!

To be fair, I'd replace "cannot tolerate a joke" with "cannot tolerate a sexist, bigoted joke".

I'm surprised I haven't read "political correctness" yet in this thread. Let me jump in before we do -- in this context, when someone invokes "political correctness", it's to say "well, I know that I'm going to be offending people here, but let me blame them for not liking it when I insult them, and imply through my actions that they deserve to be ridiculed by others."

I am also sick of "thoughtful, human kindness and decency" being labeled as "political correctness". How about people just not being total tools to one another?
