I'm in the Wilmington, NC area. We relocated to my grandmother's house which is more inland. The wind has simmered down a bit. The power here went out at about 10 am this morning. Last night none of us could sleep because the wind was pounding the house so bad! Unable to sleep I checked on my pet snake in the garage and I felt like I was in a zombie horror movie! The wind sounded like someone (or something) trying to get in! On top of that my grandmother doesn't know I have a snake! Every time she goes in the garage I panic inside! She hates snakes! I was actually supposed to move on Weds but the storm delayed that. I brought all my animals, my cat, snake, and three fish. I couldn't even imagine leaving them since my window in my bedroom was in a danger zone for damage.
Looking out the front window here (at my grandmother's) I see the neighbors tree fell down and there is a tree limb blocking one side of the road. The trees are aggressively rattling with every burst of the storm. Surprisingly in a span of 30 mins I saw at least three vehicles drive past. The wind right now sounds like waves crashing on the beach.
Addressing the many people that don't understand why we didn't relocate away from Wilmington, we really didn't have the means or the time to relocate or a practical place to go to. We have relatives in West Virginia and Maryland which is too far considering we have animals with us and just didn't end up happening. We have gotten several messages from people asking, "Why didn't you leave? Why stay?". It's just not that simple. I understand the concern, but trust me if I could leave I would. Power outages are no fun... Of course! We also aren't in a area of mandatory evacuation, just voluntary. That's another thing I don't think people understand.
Another thing about this storm that was interesting was that it was weird to me was seeing Wrightsville Beach on CNN. WB is a neighboring beach to Wilmington. Very close to home for me.
