The infamous Flying Pan Flag has a story: Resilient flag shredded by Florence off NC coast ‘represents who we are as America’

Tweet from the Flying Pan:
Hey folks, the last time we were out we put up a new flag. With respect, we will retire and replace it next trip. We see the tears and know that good men and women fought for America and are honored to fly old glory! Please understand, this is a hurricane. We are not on the tower and can't go outside and replace it yet.

(The Frying Pan cams are having network issues due to Hurricane Florence, but we're working to get them online!)

Flag and Banner has donated a replacement U.S. flag to the Frying Pan Tower. The live cam feed was showing “highlights” on Friday instead of live footage, so the flag in the feed appears to be a new one, but Neal says the one he got from Flag and Banner has not been raised yet.

In addition:

He plans to donate the tattered flag that made it through the storm to Cystic Fibrosis Wilmington or the American Red Cross of Wilmington for a fundraiser, after all the attention it got through Hurricane Florence. It will be sold at auction, as proof through the night that our flag was still there.

I am so sorry for those who have lost their lives, their relatives, and all the people who are calling for rescue :(

I have images in my mind of those people on the beach before the storm came in, they seemed so relaxed like it was any day on the beach....but where are they--and those like them who either chose to stay or felt they couldn't leave--staying now? Are they safe?

It's not just about using buses that would otherwise be standing idle, but also about a more efficient use of limited

All of this is a matter for disaster planning. It should already have been done. Clearly it hasn't. That means it needs to be done before the next disaster is even on the horizon.

There is nothing in your questions above that cannot be addressed. It just comes down to having the imagination to ask "what if ....?" and start wargaming for catastrophe and finding solutions.

I'm an INTJ. Obviously .... ;)

Lol, i havent seen that term in 35 years..me too!!!! INTJ!!

I'm in the Wilmington, NC area. We relocated to my grandmother's house which is more inland. The wind has simmered down a bit. The power here went out at about 10 am this morning. Last night none of us could sleep because the wind was pounding the house so bad! Unable to sleep I checked on my pet snake in the garage and I felt like I was in a zombie horror movie! The wind sounded like someone (or something) trying to get in! On top of that my grandmother doesn't know I have a snake! Every time she goes in the garage I panic inside! She hates snakes! I was actually supposed to move on Weds but the storm delayed that. I brought all my animals, my cat, snake, and three fish. I couldn't even imagine leaving them since my window in my bedroom was in a danger zone for damage.

Looking out the front window here (at my grandmother's) I see the neighbors tree fell down and there is a tree limb blocking one side of the road. The trees are aggressively rattling with every burst of the storm. Surprisingly in a span of 30 mins I saw at least three vehicles drive past. The wind right now sounds like waves crashing on the beach.

Addressing the many people that don't understand why we didn't relocate away from Wilmington, we really didn't have the means or the time to relocate or a practical place to go to. We have relatives in West Virginia and Maryland which is too far considering we have animals with us and just didn't end up happening. We have gotten several messages from people asking, "Why didn't you leave? Why stay?". It's just not that simple. I understand the concern, but trust me if I could leave I would. Power outages are no fun... Of course! We also aren't in a area of mandatory evacuation, just voluntary. That's another thing I don't think people understand.

Another thing about this storm that was interesting was that it was weird to me was seeing Wrightsville Beach on CNN. WB is a neighboring beach to Wilmington. Very close to home for me.

On the weather channel, the newscaster was leaning into the wind, acting like it was so strong he couldn't hardly stand up, and in the background, two people stroll along like it wasn't windy or raining. I guess everyone must be an actor to have any position on TV. Disgusting that weather newscasters would FAKE the intensity of a storm. There's enough real tragedy to report on without faking the winds. I'm disgusted!

I saw that on one of the videos I posted this morning. I wondered the same thing...

LOL that video. It may have been hard to stand if he's on wet grass instead of the sidewalk or street!
