mayor on why order to evacuate was not issued:

The mayor, who was elected in 2015, stood by his decision not to issue an evacuation order for Houston because, while the city anticipated a lot of rain, Houston was not in Harvey’s direct path.
He said that because of the flooding, every neighborhood would have to be evacuated, which is "dangerous."
"You cannot put in the city of Houston 2.3 million people on the road -- that is dangerous," Turner said. "When you combine Houston and Harris county, you literally cannot put 6.5 million people on the road."
Turner said the best place for people is to be in their homes.
Hurricane Harvey -- which weakened to a tropical storm by Saturday afternoon -- has led to record levels of rainfall in the Houston area and has so far left three dead.

I saw on TV news earlier that every freeway in Houston area is under water. What a horrendously scary mess this continues to grow into.

FM 762 in Rosenberg started collapsing. it looked like this earlier today:

Ugh Army corp announcing they are going to have to do water releases

All roads around the two areas will flood

When we had our flood the Georgia Power dam breached. They were opening the floodgates but due to the amount of constant rainfall it caused it to breach releasing water that did more damage. We had bridges which collapsed as well and a lot of the highways gave way.

Underneath the asphalt or concrete the ground in some affected areas will become saturated/soft/spongy, and wont hold the weight up of the bridge spans or highways much less vehicles.

It will be horrible if the levies and any dam cant contain the runoff water where it can be released slowly like they usually do. I pray that does not happen.

Houston will most likely see many roadways and bridges become unsafe for travel as this intensifies. Once all of this nightmare goes away the DOT has to come out and inspect all of the bridges and highways before letting people travel on them again. There will most likely be great sinkholes in subdivisions or property where homes are now sitting and even in business areas of town.

IMO

I am confident insurers are not going to need pictures or battle a claim!

They really have no other choice. If they don't release some of the water it will cause the levies and dams to rupture which would be devastating even more than releasing the amount they are having to release now.

They know they are in a life and death situation, and my heart breaks for all involved.

Ocean Blue Eyes and Lone Traveler, I very much appreciate your words of wisdom that do come from direct experience and surviving!! Ocean, thank you for explaining. I wish the powers-that-be could read your advice! It seems to me, just my opinion, that some did not think Harvey was going to be as bad as he is turning out to be... Sandy, Katrina, Matthew, Floyd.

Just sitting here wringing my hands! It seems all the news people are predicting days more of rain!
Unfortunately, many people think that if they did ok with the last storm that this one will be ok. Please be safe. The Gulf waters are so very warm and that just feeds storms like this.

I just found out that my area is under a Tropical Storm Watch. This happened so fast that no one was paying attention. I checked the system this morning and it was broadcast that the storm would pass way off the coast, now things have changed.
Look at how fast Harvey was born. I've always tracked storms, a hobby of mine.

Me too...hobby. Thanks for your advice. I agree. Have been in 3 hurricanes and I'm quite paranoid now. I feel so bad for all....This will be one of the most difficult times of their lives that they will never forget. :tears::tears:
