dam is starting to discharge

50, 000 cubic feet of water now

back on rescue boat with reporter and our 20/20 star (!)

ugh weather dude back in studio cut into anchor with reporter on the boat

to let him know that a very strong storm is coming upon them quickly and will be heavy for about an hour

where they are releasing the dam they tell them at 8 at night that they are not allowed to leave in dark

I learned a lot from Orville dam but frankly kinda think they should have done the release in the daytime ??

Obviously 50000cf of water being released in a flooded area is going to be a different experience than rain and slow rise

no power dark probably know the release is coming they do sirens can you imagine

lets hope it is lack of power

Buffalo bayou is the one that is gonna be one of the impacted ones from the dc

memorial park driveway

anyone know if Tricia is safe? I didn't think she was in the area but FB check-ins have her as such

CNN weatherman just said 11 TRILLION GALLONS of water had already fallen. This is incomprehensible to me ... where can that much water possible go soon enough to be a help?

one thing has amazed me and I don't know if it is because the weather is so awful or the people there are just that special, but there are no words coming out about criminal activity (no looting, robbing, etc). You rock, TEXANS!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I continue to send prayers and support for my WS pals anywhere near this disaster. Stay safe. I hope you all have been well prepared for several days of not getting out and about. Stocked up on essentials like toilet paper, fresh water, etc. you kno the routine, I'm sure.

you are all still in my constant thoughts and I hate when I have to leave this thread for anything else. I feel so helpless

dear oceanblueeyes-
Just wanted to mention, that I so very much appreciate your posts. They are always very well-written, informative, sensible, and caring. That goes for this 'Hurricane Harvey' thread, and all other threads where I've read your posts.
I wish I knew you in person; I'd take you out to lunch, so we could sit and chat! You're a sweet southern belle, and I'm a tough ol' Texas broad, but we're the same at heart, and we'd surely get along.
If you ever come to Japan, let me know! :)

When we had our flood the Georgia Power dam breached. They were opening the floodgates but due to the amount of constant rainfall it caused it to breach releasing water that did more damage. We had bridges which collapsed as well and a lot of the highways gave way.

Underneath the asphalt or concrete the ground in some affected areas will become saturated/soft/spongy, and wont hold the weight up of the bridge spans or highways much less vehicles.

It will be horrible if the levies and any dam cant contain the runoff water where it can be released slowly like they usually do. I pray that does not happen.

Houston will most likely see many roadways and bridges become unsafe for travel as this intensifies. Once all of this nightmare goes away the DOT has to come out and inspect all of the bridges and highways before letting people travel on them again. There will most likely be great sinkholes in subdivisions or property where homes are now sitting and even in business areas of town.

IMO

The reporter on the boat has been amazing so I decided to check him out and sure enough

Foti Kallergis is an 11-time Texas Associated Press Broadcasters and Emmy Award winning TV journalist. FotiKallergis started his career as an intern at ABC13

there being more honest about the discharge not good

That might be a cruise I think everyone is watered out!!

I am confident insurers are not going to need pictures or battle a claim!

Oh they will! Insurance is always going to try to save themselves every penny they can. People will have to jump through hoops and be able to juggle their way through so many steps to get what they are owed/due. It will not be a pleasant experience, I'm afraid. I hope I am wrong.

Unfortunately they do and they will. They are, after all, insurance companies.

This group, United Policy Holders, is an non-profit advocacy group for insurance policy holders. There is a fountain of valuable advice on their pages. Their "Homeowner's Inventory Guide" under Resources is absolutely wonderful in assisting a loss victim in inventorying their loss. It goes room by room and lists EVERYTHING one might have had in their home. Down to cotton balls and Q-tips in the bathroom. It downloads into an Excel format and can be printed out and then used as a check list.

http://www.uphelp.org/ This is the main page

http://www.uphelp.org/pubs/samples-damage-and-proof-loss-documentation This page has lots of good info about how to handle a loss and about half way down are clickable links to the blank Home Inventory Worksheet and also to one that was filled in by a homeowner so people can see an example.

Anyone who has any type of an insurance loss would be well advised to bookmark these pages.

thank you for these links! Excellent for all of us.

I have been worrying about them all day. tricia has sent word she is OK, but have not heard from BFMD or geevee or Bootsctr since this morning, I think, and a few more. Lonetraveler .... you keep a good eye on things; sending good thoughts your way, too.

This is not good.

The storms are starting to train again

BFMD - checking in - just suffering from fatigue. Our event ended awhile ago - we are nominal - again our friends and neighbors in Rockport and Port Aransas were impacted far worse than we. I want to hear from Bootsctr and Geevee - glad to see the stalwart here keeping the candle it for those in harms way - CARIIS, Ocean, Popsicle and too many for me to keep up with (sorry!!!!)

On CNN, they were talking with Tim Miller from Texas Equusearch. his family (not sure how many, I believe he said 5 members, some were grandchildren) were in their attic and called or texted him for help; He drove as far as he could and took a boat with him -- took the boat the last few miles to rescue them safely. He sounded so devastated and felt awful boating past others stranded on top of their cars begging for help that he could not give, since he knew he had to get to his own family, What a terrible predicament that just have been for him.
