I remember the subject being brought up earlier about how fireants can survive flooding. Check this out:

Island of fire ants spotted on Houston floodwaters

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2017/08/28/island-fire-ants-spotted-on-houston-floodwaters.html

Oh my gosh, isn't the life-threatening flooding, loss of homes, and property damage enough to deal with?! Fire ants as well?

This floating 'island' sure looks like they mean business too.

FGS, it's like something out of the Apocalypse...

(((((Geevee)))))

I'm so relieved to hear you are, against all odds, still home & reasonably dry. I've been trying to track news about the reservoir releases, but haven't been able to find anything more recent than from early this AM. Am hoping that flooding bayous/rivers from elsewhere don't feed into your reservoir, especially since I imagine many will be cresting for days to come.

Stay safe, and please stay in touch when you are able. All those hugs and more back at you. :)

Thanks geevee for checking in too. It's a relief to hear that you're dry so far, but the situation sounds really dicey. Crossing fingers, and everything else for you!

Please keep us posted...

Thanks both of you :), this blob of rain (that's been over us constantly all day long) is almost past us, maybe another hour. If it'll just stop raining for a few hours before they increase the release and allow the area creeks/bayous/tributaries to recede a bit we may just make it.

They told us to expect 2-4 feet of water with the release, scary amount when everything is overly saturated and nowhere for it to go except into neighborhoods and homes.

2 to 4 feet of "standing" water?!!!!!

Don't know any of you who are dealing with this disaster, but still feeling all mother-hennish here. Not heard from several of you in awhile - and since this is an ongoing crisis, hour-to-hour, minute-to-minute, I can't help but worry. Hoping you're all okay!

I know you have so much more important things to deal with right now, ( and don't want to add to your stress, ) but if you get a chance, please check in and let us know you're safe...

( Be thankful I'm not your mother; I'd drive you nuts! )

ETA - Thanks totesmagoat! You're one of them I was thinking about. You must be so worried though about the situation with your mother. How scary and frustrating for you. Thoughts and prayers she will get out of there safely. Please keep us posted...

Jazz, you sound so much like me. I am worrying over all our memebers and their family/friends as if they were my own children (and maybe grandchildren :hiding: ) I keep peeking in and holding myself back from responding to every post made, but whenI haven't heard/seen someone for "too long" (in mama's time) I have to send out an SOS-check in time.

'Glad to see totesmagoat (love that name.... will name my next child after you :giggle: .... will have to be a fur-babe, though). I hope you can convince mom to move out for a few days --- so you don't have to feel so stressed, Would she do it if you explained that she has all of you worried, and it would ease some stress on you to have her where you don't have to keep such an eye on the weather reports?

Boots checking in! Haven't caught up yet. Just got overwhelmed by all the people and critters needing rescuing. Thank you all for posting! It is nice to have information at one location. :grouphug:

Indeed, I get more info from here than in TV or chasing same articles on different sites, WS is my first go-to for almost everything.

hang tight ... love you, scoots!

Geevee!!!!!!

Please check in if you're able! Are you still keeping up with the dam waters being released, and, what are the odds you'll have to evacuate??

Countless hugs from your sis!

GEEVEE .... :uthere:

TexMex....

I don't see any posts by you on this thread. Are you OK? I miss hearing about about all that fine food you're so great at cooking up.

I hope TexMex is all right, with this and everything else. last post on WS was late July..... ???

Please keep our wonderful Bessie in your thoughts and prayers. Where she lives (not in Texas but close) there are horrible thunderstorms and tornado warnings. She needs all the positive thoughts and prayers you can offer.

Oh no! Sending up prayers and the most positive thoughts I can. I do hope she and DH can get out quickly if needed, but pray that she can stay put and at home and their health stays intact. :praying: thanks for the heads up, Tricia. Thinking of you, BESSIE!

Family members have identified the 6 who were reported drowned.

http://www.khou.com/weather/harvey/...hile-trying-to-escape-harvey-floods/468579903

According to witnesses, the family was trying to get to higher ground when the van they were traveling in hit high floodwaters after crossing a bridge on Green River Road in Greens Bayou.

The van was swept up in the current, and the driver was able to crawl out. He told the children inside to try and get out through the back door, but they were unable to. According to family members, the van quickly sank with everyone inside.

The driver was able to hang onto a tree limb and escape.

It was one of a few bright spots that lifted my heavy heart, seeing those cattle walking down that street! Such an orderly fashion, they went.

And I had posted how wonderful it was o not see looting happening. Smh --- or smack their heads: stupid people are everywhere these days. This kind of behavior cannot be tolerated, and if it your kid/spouse/neighbor, do not tolerate it, either! Learn some decency, you low-lifes!

Yippee! No power can be hard, but it is tolerable to any other development. I do hope you co to use to stay dry!

thansk for updating your safety, Coco..... and glad to hear updates on "the rices" from our other members. Always relieved to hear more good news.'

Geevee! :waving: Thrilled to see your ere here and so far managing to stay dry. Are you in an area that the reservoir release is going to affect? It does sound like a strong possibility. That would be the biggest kick after working so hard to keep it dry. Yeah, I understand the need, too, but it will make me sad all over again for those I had hopes for. Sending good vibes with the hope they help. Hope you are able to update us again sometime today, or after this release has spilled its excess. Worried all over again for you, luv.

Tragically, if the reservoirs aren't released in a controlled situation, the reservoirs can collapse entirely and be even more devastating.

I cannot remember if I posted this here or not. Trying to stay out of flood waters here in Houston is a full time nightmare! My family is fortunate my house is dry and has power. My daughter and her hubby are with us since they lost power Saturday and they only live 5 blocks away. Go figure! My sister and her husband are trying to make their way over since Buffalo Bayou is about to enter her house after the reservoir release earlier. That will be 6 adults and 5 dogs in a 3 bedroom house but we are so fine and grateful!!

For those asking about where to donate, here is one list that is legit. Again, if I already posted this I apologize. It's kinda crazy down here!

Thanks Spellbound. I agree! We ( and many other people here too ) have that 'all in this together' feeling.

If one of us is hurting, we're all hurting.

I've been glued to this thread. When I do need to leave, I'm still worrying about them.

I don't want to be a board hog, but every time one of them check in, I feel so relieved and want to shout out a big thanks to them! So glad they're ok.

This has to be so scary and terrifying for them. Just want them to know they are not alone. We care about what they're going through.

They will always have an ear to listen..

I've got to say that I've seen so much devastation that it is hard to make me emotional but this made me cry. This is a real Hero and this storm http://www.wect.com/story/36234920/photo-of-mother-and-babys-rescue-becomes-symbol-of-stormhas revealed so many.

Thank you for posting this! Very tender and poignant story. I hadn't seen this and it really affected me too. True hero indeed.

How scared the mother must have been, praying that help would come. The relief when she got her baby to safety. The baby sleeping peacefully through the rescue.

Then the 'miracle' of getting this particular photo transmitted by the photographer. According to the article, right after he sent this photo, he fell out of a boat when they hit debris in the water. He lost one of his cameras with all the photographs on it. This photo had already been safely sent though...

Heartwarming story. Thank you...

This is so heartbreaking. I saw one of the Mayors on Fox this afternoon and he said the first responders are expecting to find more bodies inside homes, vehicles, or in the floodwaters.

There has been so many countless heroes during this disaster but they all have to be getting very exhausted themselves by now. It is scary to see the boats out and then they hit the roof of a hidden vehicle under the water and they have even hit the roof of some submerged homes. It shows how dark and murky the floodwaters are. I also saw where a main road had ruptured all the way across it. It is very likely before this is over with that more roads and even bridges will collapse or at least parts of the entire bridge span. All of the rainwater underneath all of the bridges can greatly compromise the H&I beams which supports all bridges.

So glad to see a lot of our Texas friends have now posted. I was getting very worried when we weren't hearing from them.

I sure hope and pray the dams or levees hold. If they become breached due to the heavy load they are trying to hold back then the citizens in the area will have another nightmare to deal with. Iirc, ONE gallon of water weighs around 8 pounds so the force behind a dam breech spilling all of the held back water into the surrounding areas would be even more traumatic than it is now..... if possible.

I am still praying hard for all of you.

Thank you to the posters who were kind enough to provide the donation links. My husband, and I made our first donation today, but are planning on donating often because the recovery and clean up could take years to happen.

Harvey will go down in history as being the worst hurricane that caused major flood damage. IMO Even those who have been trying to calculate the possible loss has stopped doing so since this is still an ongoing traumatic event. Homes and business will be wiped out with some building back along with others who will not, and just think about the huge losses concerning vehicles alone who are now submerged, and others that are going to be submerged before the floodwaters starts to ebb. It has to be so frightening for those who are right in the middle of it. Most now are trying to be strong but as time goes on there will be those who will suffer from deep depression.

Imo, because the Gulf is shallower a few miles offshore compared to further out where it is much deeper, and very cold due to the sun being unable to penetrate very deep water enough to greatly warm it. Usually when hurricanes spawn out at sea they will pick up speed/power/force once it hits the very warm waters. Its like my own pool. The shallow end is much warmer during the summertime with our very high heat here with mostly sunshine every day, and the deep end is cooler.

The Gulf water will continue to warm and will possibly be even warmer than it is now.

IMO
