A tropical disturbance in the Atlantic has an 80% chance of strengthening into a tropical depression or Tropical Storm Isaias (ees-ah-EE-as) within the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center.

PTC9 is still rapidly moving toward the wnw, a little slower than yesterday at 23MPH. The track has again shifted a little to the west, It is still forecast to become a tropical storm sometime later today, but it currently remains in an disorganized state at the moment.

Key Messages:

1. Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine will produce heavy rains and potentially life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides across the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

2. Tropical storm conditions are likely across portions of the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico today and spreading westward to portions of the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Thursday. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for these areas. Do not focus on the details of the track forecast, as rainfall and wind hazards will extend far from the center of the system.

3. The details of the long-range track and intensity forecasts are more uncertain than usual since the system does not have a well-defined center and it could move over portions of the Greater Antilles later this week. However, this system could bring some rainfall and wind impacts to portions of Cuba, the Bahamas, and Florida by the end of the week. Interests there should monitor its progress and updates to the forecast over the next few days.

Isaias is approaching the Dominican Republic this morning, and after the system passes as has time to reorganize north of the island we likely may have a better idea of what comes of it afterwards. Those in the cone should watch it. The forecast has shifted very slightly to the right, but much of this track depends on what is happening over the next few hours and how the system deals with Hispaniola.

Key Messages:

Florida closes all state-run coronavirus tests sites this weekend due to tropical system

All state-run COVID-19 testing sites in Florida will close Friday through Tuesday because of the approaching tropical system in the Caribbean Sea.

The order was issued in an email sent Wednesday to test site managers, according to WCTV-TV, saying that all sites will close at the end of business Thursday and will re-open on Tuesday — so long as there isn’t storm significant damage from what forecasters expect will soon develop into Tropical Storm Isaias.

I'm in NC too but in the middle of the state. I hope Isaias doesn't cause a big problem for the NC coast (or anywhere else for that matter). Ocracoke got hit hard last September by Hurricane Dorian.

As a tropical storm, Isaias whipped Haiti and the Dominican Republic and left hundreds of thousands of people without power on Puerto Rico alone.

Now a hurricane, it's heading toward the Bahamas and Florida on Friday morning -- and may eventually have much of the US East Coast in its sights.

Isaias strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane late Thursday after crossing the Dominican Republic, and -- with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph -- was hitting the southernmost Bahamas islands with rain and wind Friday morning.

The hurricane is expected to slam the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos with 4 to 8 inches of rain and leave potentially life-threatening flooding Friday and Saturday.

Isaias' center then is expected to get close to Florida's east coast Saturday or Sunday -- a threat that has prompted the state to shut down some testing sites for Covid-19. Rains from outer bands could hit South Florida by Friday night.

South and east-central Florida could see 2 to 4 inches, with isolated totals of 6 inches, from Friday night through Monday.

Much of the Bahamas is under a hurricane warning Friday morning, while parts of Florida's Atlantic coast, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, are under a tropical storm watch.

The watch was issued after two hurricane models pushed Isaias’ projected more westward, encompassing a greater portion of Florida. Heavy rains may begin to affect South Florida by Saturday morning, the NHC said.

”The most recent forecast, it brings that eye closer to the coast so we just have to be vigilant,” DeSantis said. “So please heed the warnings of your local officials.”

The watch includes communities from Deerfield Beach northward to the Volusia-Brevard County line, the National Hurricane Center said in its 2 p.m. update. An earlier tropical storm watch from Key Largo to Sebastian Inlet has been turned into a tropical storm warning as well.

DeSantis will be traveling to Tampa later Friday to meet with President Donald Trump discuss matters on both Isais and COVID-19.

No evacuations have been declared at this time.

I do too, but you know to be prepared living in the storm zone.

Just went and gassed up my suv, went to the grocery store.... bread isle was thinning out as usual, but all seemed to be stocked at Publix. Mr. BUF cranked up the generator while I was gone. He’ll go get gas for it later today.

Just an FYI, this morning our local station WFTV said the power company in Central Florida, OUC, said be patient if there are power outages as things are slower getting back on due to covid. We are on WP power, which may be even slower.

I use potting soil and mulch bags to shore up the lanai - then can re-use in the garden - we always need mulch here - biggest worry is the flooding that happens and the pool overflows - the bags are pretty effective and I haven't had water intrusion since I started using them a few years ago. I gassed up at Costco yesterday and the other cars are full too. I do need to get charcoal though. thanks for that reminder since I don't have a generator - but I did buy 4 battery operated 10" fans a few months ago plus the batteries - better get those and the candles out. and turn the AC way down. stay safe
