Katrina just downgraded to a Cat 3 - according to FOX News.

As bad as it still is - New Orleans seems to have dodged the "big time" bullet. :)

Hopefully, all of our fervent all night prayers helped ...

Wishing blessings & prayers to all still in Katrinas path!

I have MSNBC on and they were saying that the authorities got a message from a guy who had decided to stay and weather the storm out....he called on his cell and said he was not sure he could get through his roof, but he had an axe and a hammer and he stated....."Come and get me; I want to live!"

Why do these people not heed the warnings?

I think for some people riding out the worst storm in history and having an exciting story to tell afterward is just too compelling to pass up. This is SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST in action. Intelligence and personal choices are equally important in determining "fitness" as physical strength and health. :(

Again - according to FOX News

The death toll, down here in Florida, from Hurricane Katrina, when she was only a Cat "1" - has risen from 7 to 11 victims.

A number of those folks were ones who did NOT heed the warnings and took ridiculous risks.

Good morning everyone. My daughter, Tammy & her family are holding up fine in their house in Vancleave. Ms...They are without power, but she called me on her cell a few minutes ago. Thank God this thing is not as powerful as it was earlier. They are between New Orleans & Biloxi (near Gulfport), and the worst of it (for them) is happening now. She said she could see that one small pine tree was down in the back yard, but other than that, they think the house is fine. They can't go out to check the roof, but there aren't any leaks inside. The kids are playing monopoly, and Paul will fire up the generator as soon as this thing has passed (don't wanna' run those inside, nope, bad idea).
Thank you so much J Bean for your nice letter, and all of you for your concern about my family. I really appreciate all my friends here, & I pray all are safe today.
I havn't read all of this thread yet, But I will when I get to work (so much nicer there with DSL...we have dial-up at the house (SLLLOOOWWWW).
I'll get back to WS when I get to work.
Hugs to all,
Deb

Katrina downgraded once again to a "Cat 2"

1 pm EDT - Fox News

Edited to add: Downgraded to a Cat "1" at 3 pm today.

Down here in Florida - we were hit so hard by 3 powerful hurricanes in succession last year. I remember all-too-well how it feels to be without power (especially A/C) for almost 2-3 weeks at a time. And hours long gas & ice lines - if you could even find it. Just a Miserable situation!

Generators were truly a God-send but extremely difficult to obtain and waay over-priced when you did find them. Still they couldn't run the A/C. At least we were on higher ground and didn't have the extreme flooding problem that the Gulf Coast is experiencing. I'm just flabbergasted at what I'm seeing on TV - and feeling terribly guilty that I have so much when others are losing everything.

The current video of the widespread destruction on FOX & MSNBC is just unreal! Can't sit still - have to do something to help. Going to put together *Emergency supply packages* for victims needing assistance - also "Pet Care Packages", of course.

Hi Jovin!

In 2001 and 2002, I worked during mandatory fire evacuations - some people are great...and some can be downright nasty. Unbelievable. Not very often, but a few times my commanding officer did indeed threaten arrest. More often, but again, not used too often, was asking the person to sign a waiver, basically that they realize no emergency personnel will be responding to any emergency call they may make and they're staying at their own risk. Although some would be just rude and obnoxious, they'd usually do it. IMO, you see the best and the worst of people in these situations.

Well do I assume the levees held, or can there still be more trouble? Evidently the 20 foot storm surge didn't happen? Man, what luck. sounds like Gulfport, Ms. was destroyed.

I hope that scenario of the flooding and all the chemicals in the water is not going to happen now.

I tried to call my daughter just now (she's in Vancleave, just out of Gulfport), but the cell towers must be down. They have 3 cell phones between them but all I get is busy signals on all 3. They were fine when I talked to her at 8:30 this morning, and that was during the worst of it in their area. Hopefully when this thing passes them, she'll be able to contact us somehow.

The kids did load up the car & the van & head out yesterday, but when they got to the highway and saw how congested it was, they had to make a decision. Paul was afraid they'd be stuck out there somewhere on the road when it hit, so they turned back. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision to make. I hope it was the right one.

Oh my Heavenly, you must be beside yourself! Well, at least you got a 8:30am update. Sometimes the not knowing is the worst, huh? Hopefully you'll get a call fairly soon.

P.S. Sacramento metro area is my home! :woohoo: (I just moved to TX in late 2002 - all my family, etc. is still back in CA!)

Sassy, I got those photos a couple of months ago online from a friend. They are "spoof" photos of all kind of vehicle topics. Has nothing to do with Katrina evacuees.

Their house is built well, so I really think they're OK. I've scanned some pics from last year when I was out there. 1st pic is the front of the house, 2nd pic is of the back yard where she said she could see a tree down. The 3rd pic is me & my 'baby' girl, Tammy when they took me to see New Orleans. You're from Sacramento deputy? We go there quite often looking for records. We go to 'The Beat' and in old Sac, 'Brooks Novelty'.

I'm in the Ft Walton Beach FL area & the weather is lousy here. The winds are high (at least 30-60mph now -- wx rpt said 90 mph gusts earlier) and it sounds like a freight train going thru the tall trees in the wetlands. The storm surge is coming in (we're only getting about 5-6 ft.) -- I can see the water rising in the wetlands behind the house. The rain has been intermittent as the storm bands roll thru. Most schools & businesses are closed here today. We do still have power.

We're almost 200 mi east of New Orleans & about 140 mi east Gulfport. Plus Katrina can be felt quite a bit further east from this location. Does that give you a good idea of how BIG Katrina is!?! I can't imagine. My heart goes out to the folks who couldn't leave the area and get away from monster Katrina. :(

I can't stop watching the news & looking at the pics that are already available. We lived thru Ivan & Dennis here (now they look like lightweights), but I wouldn't want to see Katrina up close & personal -- nor would I wish her on ANYBODY! Gads...

Hope all the WSers are safe & out of harms way. OB

Nice pics! It was weird yesterday watching the news and New Orleans. I was there in 1990...I was thinking to myself that I hoped all the residents and tourists took good pictures before evacuating, as it may not look the same for many, many years. Well now it sounds as though NO won't be "as" bad as first thought, but try telling that to the many who WILL lose their house, business, etc. Almost mind-boggling, isn't it?

Yes, Roseville/Rocklin. But have also lived in Modesto, Stockton and Galt!
