Hurricane Michael - October 2018

The storm, just hours from expected landfall, would need its winds to rev up to 157 mph to reach Cat 5 status.

Meteorologists weren't sure whether Michael would cross the threshold, but one thing they were certain of: The hurricane isn't likely to lose its punch.

"There doesn’t seem to be any opportunity for this storm to weaken at all, and it may strengthen," said Brett Rathbun, a meteorologist with AccuWeather. "It could get up to 150 – but regardless, easily a Category 4.”

Scott Pecoriello, with meteorological data analytics firm Weather Optics, said the storm could "possibly" near Category 5 strength based on rotational features at the storm's center. "A sign of extreme winds and further intensification. Sustained winds of 145 mph will destroy anything in its path," he tweeted.

Unbelievable, isn't it? I've had tears in my eyes the last few times I've updated.

ETA: I love this area of Florida. Some of my best memories are from vacationing there.

Michael is a Category 4 beast and, incredibly, is STILL STRENGTHENING! It isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility that Michael makes a run at a Category 5 storm. Based on latest hurricane hunter data, the pressure is down to about 938 mb or so. To get to Cat 5 it would need to be at 920 — longshot but possible.

Anyway, regardless, the Florida Panhandle is about to experience something for which there is no precedent.

I can't imagine. Go to bed expecting to ride out a Cat 2 and wake up to a 150 mph storm. The stuff of nightmares.

Updated probabilities of tropical storm-force winds (with higher gusts) across the Carolinas. FAY, BTW, has a 10 percent chance of sustained 60 mph winds.

Rainfall could reach up to a foot (30 centimeters), and the life-threatening storm surge could swell to 14 feet (4 meters).
The storm appeared to be so powerful that it is expected to remain a hurricane as it moves over Georgia early Thursday. Forecasters said it will unleash damaging wind and rain all the way into the Carolinas, still recovering from Hurricane Florence's epic flooding.

"We are in new territory," National Hurricane Center Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen wrote on Facebook. "The historical record, going back to 1851, finds no Category 4 hurricane ever hitting the Florida panhandle."
Category 4 Hurricane Michael nears Florida Panhandle

There are currently 54 shelters open across the Panhandle and Big Bend areas, Scott said, adding that more than 1,000 search and rescue personnel will be deployed after the hurricane passes through.

"We have trucks loaded with tons of food, water and other critical supplies, ready to move in," Scott said.

The NHC predicts Michael's center will move inland over the Florida Panhandle or Big Bend area before moving northeast across the southeastern U.S. Wednesday night and Thursday. It will then move off the East Coast — but as it does so, it will also regain some strength from the Atlantic Ocean.

Is landfall near a high or low density population? Anyone know?

Michael is terrifying! Thinking of all of you in the affected areas. I'm praying most people did the right thing and evacuated but I've been reading that may not be the case.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends texting friends and family rather than calling because phone lines will likely be overwhelmed.

Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature, which gives users in the area of crisis a chance to mark themselves safe. By clicking here, you can see who on yourFacebook friends list lives in the affected area and whether or not they have indicated that they are out of harm's way.

The Red Cross has a similar site called Safe and Well. There, users have the option to list themselves as safe or search a list of registrants for their loved ones. For those who mark themselves safe, there's also an option to select a message such as "currently at shelter" and "will email when available" or write a custom message that loved ones will see when they search the registry.
How to check if your loved one is safe during Hurricane Michael

The Palmetto SC Region of the American Red Cross will begin opening shelters for Hurricane Michael evacuees.

There are currently two shelters on the list:
-- 3765 Leeds Avenue - North Charleston - Open at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday
-- First Baptist Church of Barnwell - 161 Allen Street, Barnwell, SC - Open at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday

Cots will be available to those who need them, but people should bring blankets, pillows, clothing, medication and other comfort items.
