Hurricane Michael - October 2018

  • #261
I can't stop checking in here... thank you for all the updates everyone, I apologize for my less than useful posts.

A sister in law of mine is in FL, not in the path though, this is when I wish we spoke. She's kinda a recluse and any relationship with her is a tough one. No hate, just difficult. Anyway, just saying that things like this make you realize that maybe we should try harder. Sorry for the O/T guys!

I cant lie. I am more terrified than I have ever been in my life during bad weather and I am 71 years old.

Our local news says to expect catastrophic damage with a possibility of loss of life. It will come in at 100 mph.

We have had constant heavy rains since this morning. We are an area of Georgia filled with huge tall trees. The rain is already soaking the roots making the trees unstable. So many trees are either going to topple over or be uprooted and slammed into structures.

I am praying harder than I have ever prayed before for my own community..my dear loved ones and every single one who will be affected and has already felt Michael's fury.

May God be with all of us.

Thank you so much. All of this is going to happen when it's dark here.

To say the least it's going to be very long night.

Our local forecaster said it will be unsafe to go outside until around 5am tomorrow. Curfew is in place in my county at 7 pm. Downed trees are already happening per WALB.

Our power is out, and the wind has really picked up here. I'm in the SE corner of AL. I think the next few hours will be the worst here. We're hoping the storm will weaken quickly now that it's over land.

Hi Dancemom. Check in with us as soon as you can. We're worried about everyone in the path.

Oh, prayers to you all, Ocean.

I too live among huge trees, beautiful specimen size Beech trees. And close to my house, too. That they are a group together helps stabilize them. They totally held up in hurricane Sandy clocking in at 90 mph, but nothing terrifies me more. Only lost a lone medium Oak in the back driveway.

Stay safe, your care in preparing, helping your neighbors, is so heartwarming. Please keep checking in as you can.

I don't think I'll rest until I know you and everyone is ok!

Hugs.

Our poor grandson and his fiancee are out in this mess. He is a Deputy sheriff in our county and she is an EMT paramedic.

I hope the curfew starting at 7pm means they will bring them in too.

We still have power but there are already power outages in the area.

Last I heard from my cousin was @ 3:15. Wind was howling, trees whipping, power was out, but was ok.

Good morning everyone.

Katharine as we all continue to worry and pray together I have my own story of why I have always been terrified of bad weather even as a small child. I saw the fear my mom (RIP) had so I felt if she was terrified I should be too.

She went to her grave worrying about bad weather. The day she was buried couldn't have been more beautiful with bright sunshine and calm winds. We all thought how that would have been a day she wouldn't have to worry about the weather.

During the 80s we had a tornado in my mom's area. She was in her brick home with her dog Toasty. Her sister in law lived close by however her home was made of wood. Instead of calling my aunt to come to her more solidly built home she loaded up Toasty in her vehicle and drove to my aunt's. By that time the weather was really bad so no matter how much she tried to coax Toasty out of her car..she wouldn't budge.

She races into my aunt's home. Moments later they saw the tornado and right at the edge of mom's property it lifted up over her home and was gone but all in that area there was major tornado damage all around her and my aunts home.

We had no idea she had done this until afterwards. We ask her 'moma why in the world didn't you get aunt Suzie to come stay with you since your home is brick?' She said all she could think of was she just didn't want to be alone.

I am so thankful my family evacuated from Panama City. Their lives mean everything.

However as I have watched the news since 4am I think both of their homes will be destroyed since both homes are right on the beach.

I worry for all of our WS members' safety no matter where they are since it continues to show some of us are within the eyewall path even if we live inland.

May God be with everyone who may be impacted by this monster.

Please stay safe.

I'm behind as was up all night and had to sleep. I'm one of those dead sleepers. I can sleep through very bad storms. Dead sleeping can be a benefit except for if a burglar /rapist decides to come calling.

Oh yes you sure did get your fear from your Mother. What a tornado and dog story. Your Mom was brave driving to your Aunt's house made out of wood. Oh my poor Toaster...... Our pets own fears must be so terrifying. I do not like to be alone in storms either.

I am so very sorry if your family have lost their homes. I pray it didn't happen. Yes, lives are the most important. I am glad they evacuated to a safe area. I cannot imagine those who stayed behind in those mobile homes. And those who stayed due to no driver 's licenses, their pets, or affordability.

Oh my goodness just announced Cat 3 entering GA. I pray you and your GA family stay safe. My thoughts are with you.

We are in tornado watch till 2 a.m. But so far just a few light rain spurts since I have been up for which I am thankful.

Thank you for your post. Please you stay safe. I am praying too for everyone. Stay safe everyone.

All we've had was a little rain. Hope it stays that way but I'll be watching out for tornadoes overnight.

If you are in the path that is expecting high winds which could spawn tornadoes remember to remove any objects inside your home that could become flying projectiles.

I don't keep anything on my kitchen counters except my stand mixer. My hubby took it off the counter and stored it in my pantry at the very back. You can store things inside your dishwasher making sure its locked.

Make sure you have cases of bottled water and coolers filled with ice in case you have loss of power and dont have a generator.

I have made large amounts of chicken and tuna salad all morning.. believe me everyone in our neighborhood has eaten my food at sometime. Lol

My hubby has been delivering them this morning to our neighbors along with bags of ice and bottled water. He is making sure they have coolers and if not we have many and will loan them out to those who may need one.

We have several elderly neighbors so he is going to their homes first. Now our neighbor down the street is helping him.

Also fill one of your bathtubs full of water to flush toilets in case you lose power.

Of course make sure your cell phones are full charged so you can be in touch with loved ones along with getting important weather alerts.

Thinking of all of you.

OBE. Your post brought tears. You and your hubby are very special people. Thank you!!!!!!!
