Hurricane Sandy updates

Does anyone know if Block Island, RI residents had to evacuate to the mainland? I had noticed it on a map and wondered how they were doing because I hadn't heard them mentioned at all. TIA

Everybody for at least a mile from shore, are being told to evacuate to higher grounds.
Even up in Bangor, where Stephen King lives, (love SK! ) is being hit hard. Bet they get a bunch of snow at the very least. Bummer for sure.

Our part of MD got lucky...we did not have any power outage and my brother just had power off for about 18 hours.

I'm still dumbfounded by the sinking of the HMS Bounty and the loss of two crewmembers. According to DH, we have been on this boat when it was at OpSail and other displays (all tallships are the same to me... ).

Regarding crewmember Christine Christian:

"The last time I spoke to her, she told me, 'If I go down with the ship, remember how happy I was,''' Christian's mother, who is also named Claudene, told ABC News Monday night.

The ship's connection to its namesake went back to the original Bounty, whose crew famously took over the ship from its commander, Lt. William Bligh, in April 1789. The mutiny was led by Fletcher Christian, and Claudene Christian said she was his great-great-great-great-great granddaughter.

Claudene Christian told a Canadian newspaper she was familiar with her background, and applied to sail on the Bounty replica. She was accepted despite a lack of sailing experience, with hopes her marketing skills could make the ship more popular.

The Coast Guard was also optimistic Robin Walbridge, 63, of St. Petersburg, Fla., could still be alive in his blazing red survival suit 90 miles off the North Carolina coast. Walbridge went overboard early Monday when the replica 18th-century sailing vessel, made famous in Hollywood adventure films, rolled over in 18-foot waves.

Walbridge's wife waited in their in St. Petersburg home to hear any word, surrounded by friends and crying often.

You know, I feel the worst for these poor people. I mean you know you're probably going to get flooded, maybe a tree fall, but to have your home and neighborhood burn??? Who the heck was expecting this?? And how many pets were left behind that perished.......Sad.

Wow, just saw the first helicopter shots of Long Beach Island, NJ. It's bad, much worse than I have seen of any of the other shore areas of NJ. Lots of collapsed houses, streets still entirely under water, whole streets possibly gone...

Just wanted to check in with everyone! We made it thru sandy with no damage to the house. We lost several large trees but all at the back of the property away from the house. Our power company has damage to their system. They are reporting 200,000 without power. They are hoping to have most power restored in 10 days. It will be several weeks before everything is restored.
I am sitting in a mcdonalds right now, feeling very fortunate. Being without power is a PITA but it could have been much, much worse.

Don't know how much I will have time to go back and read. Hoping everyone is safe!!

Just checking in...have a friend whose daughter is at NYU, in the dorms. They are without power. Cell phone connection is terrible, so my friend can't find out much at the moment.

Does anyone know how the students there are doing? Also, is there any estimate on when the power will be restored?

Those of you having cell phone difficulty may try texting instead, it's what worked during Katrina. I've seen a report that said Long Island was without power but that was earlier this morning...

Even with the worst of Hurricane Sandy behind us, 944,384 Long Island homes remained without power Tuesday afternoon, officials for the Long Island Power Authority said.

That number is up from this morning when more than 930,000 were without power. A spokesman for LIPA said the number would go up and down for days. Outages can be tracked on LIPA’s website.

While LIPA crews are currently out assessing damage, no timetable for restoration could be provided. The power company said it is still sticking to its pre-storm estimate of seven to 10 days before power is completely restored on Long Island

What I've found...

UPDATE [1:40 PM]: Goddard and Weinstein, which run on power from NYU’s cogeneration plant, are the only dorms with complete power. Palladium, University Hall, Founders and Third North have what’s being called ‘life support’ power, meaning hallway and stairwell lights are on, but little else. The rest of the residence halls are still completely without power. Heat is functional, however.

Food is being served at Kimmel, and Weinstein is also open for meals, but Lina Dorkhman tells us lines are long. Brett Chamberlin says Downstein is open, and Upstein is closed except for seating. We’ll update you when we know more.

PHEW. Just talked to Mom. She has no power, but is doing all right, and so is her kitty...she's so funny...she doesn't have television, so she went for a walk (???) down the block, and told me about a tree that apparently lost a branch, but "everyone seems just fine. But there are a lot of people walking around. Why don't they just drive?"

So I explained a little more of things to her, and she's promised to stay inside today, and tomorrow, and will call SugarQueen's daughter if she needs it.

It was a brief conversation, but it was good to hear her voice.
