Hurricane Sandy updates

Nor'easter threatens weather-weary East Coast

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. (AP) — A week after Superstorm Sandy pummeled the East Coast, wiping out entire communities, residents were bracing for yet another potentially damaging storm.

A nor'easter taking shape Monday in the Gulf of Mexico was expected to begin its march up the coast, eventually passing within 50 to 100 miles of the wounded New Jersey coastline on Wednesday. The storm was expected to bring winds of up to 55 mph, coastal flooding, up to 2 inches of rain along the shore, and several inches of snow to Pennsylvania and New York.

One of the biggest fears was that the storm could bring renewed flooding to parts of the shore where Sandy wiped out natural beach defenses and protective dunes.

"It's going to impact areas many areas that were devastated by Sandy. It will not be good," said Bruce Terry, the lead forecaster for the National Weather Service.

Some communities were considering again evacuating neighborhoods that were hard hit by Sandy and where residents had only recently been allowed to return. No town had made a final decision to do so as of mid-afternoon Monday.

I was watching MTVs Jersey Shore not for the people but to compare the way it was and the way it is now. It's shocking. It doesn't even look like the same place. I can't recognize anything except the Ferris wheel. I have a feeling that the governors agenda is to try to have the Jersey Shore as close to the party place it was. I really hope he succeeds, because it's really sad.

So my dad's car had to be towed b/c the gas stations put water into the gas!!! Apparently, that is a way to produce more gas (or something) but if you're the unlucky one who gets it, it can really mess up your car. The AAA guy had to tow someone else who got gas at the same station!!

Here's an update about my dad's car. Turns out it wasn't water---but diesel:

Hess gas station in North Brunswick located at 2800 Route 1 North just past Finnegans Lane mistakenly provided customers with diesel fuel on Saturday.

Of all the devastation and sadness things kids remember.....my nephew called and asked me if I still had all the photos of the carousel? I wonder if it was saved?

Surface Wind Analysis For Sandy
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/Storm_pages/sandy2012/wind.html

Most of the hurricane force winds were on the southern side of the storm.

Personally, I think Sandy was a Category 3 hurricane when it made landfall on Cuba based on satellite and radar appearance. This is despite the fact Hurricane Hunters flew into Sandy got Category 2 winds of 110 mph.

There is something called Dvorak Technique, which bases intensity of satellite appearance of storms.

Hurricane Sandy is a unusual storm. Sandy could of been a hybrid of a hurricane and extratropical storm.

My brother in law, who lives on the coast of Maine, drove down to Staten Island to try and find his wife's Aunt and Grandmother. They had promised to call and check in and nobody heard from them. So a couple of days ago he and his wife made the trek south, and went and found an empty and battered house. It was flooded, so they began asking around in the neighborhood. Finally they found them at a neighbors home. Grandma had no clue what was going on, but her Aunt was ill and in bed and was very weak. They never called because their phone was ruined and the home they were staying in had no phone service be cause they had no power and the phone was on the computer service.

Anyway they were relieved to find them, but it is very sad. Their home of 40 years is possibly condemned.

ETA: Also, sadly their home was looted. They had moved their valuables, like the electronics and computer and silver ware and heirlooms into a locked upstairs closet and it was broken into and stolen.

However when my BIL found his aunt, she was wearing ALL of her good jewelry, all at once.

katydid23, that's terrible! Hearing this makes my blood boil.
Is there anyway to catch these thieves? I wonder where they take the valuables they steal. They know police are too busy helping with the larger needs of the people now and that they'll be far behind trying to catch them.

Somewhere today I heard that police were on the job keeping an eye on the areas that were hard hit for the purpose of preventing lootings.
Lot of good that's doing after hearing your story. It's heartbreaking to think about the insult to injury this is causing these women.

I wish there was a way to catch these 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 scavengers. :please:

Where will housing be found for Sandy's victims?

http://www.centurylink.net/news/rea...ass&action=4&lang=en&_LT=UNLC_NKNWU00L4_UNEWS

NEW YORK (AP) — Government leaders are turning their attention to the next crisis unfolding in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy: finding housing for potentially tens of thousands of people left homeless.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it has already dispensed close to $200 million in emergency housing assistance and has put 34,000 people in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area up in hotels and motels.

But local, state and federal officials have yet to lay out a specific, comprehensive plan for finding them long-term places to live, even as cold weather sets in. And given the scarcity and high cost of housing in the metropolitan area and the lack of open space, it could prove a monumental undertaking..............

Another storm — a nor'easter packing heavy rain and gusts of 50 to 60 mph — was headed for the metropolitan area Wednesday, threatening more flooding and power outages that could undo some of the repairs made in the past few days.

With the temperatures dropping into the 30s overnight, people in dark, unheated homes were urged to go to overnight shelters or daytime warming centers..............more at link.....

I saw a picture of the carousel after the storm, and it didn't come through unscathed. It's not in great shape. I tried to find the photo but there were so many news photos and different station coverages that I can't find the photo. The animals are broken off the poles and the bottom disc is partially buried in sand and the top canopy is broken and tilted at an odd angle.

No, this one is in Keansburg, a smaller amusement area more north of Seaside. But thanks for the pics, I hadn't seen them. What a mess this is...so sad to see. If you've been a kid in NJ, you've been to at least one of these places, Seaside, Point Pleasant, Keansburg and probably all of them. I don't know how Wildwood fared, but I think that's the only other one. They all had boardwalks, and rides. The governor is saying "....rebuild by next summer..." but I think no way. His point was that all of the tourism is a large part of NJ economy.

Apparently there was some looting in that neighborhood immediately after the storm cleared. There were no police around yet and a lot of people had left the area. My BIL's aunt and grandmother had gone to their neighbors, around the block, BEFORE the storm because it was on much higher ground and the home can through unscathed. But there was nobody left on that street to watch the empty homes.

He doesn't think there is much of a chance to get their valuables back though because it is kind of chaotic and lots of people are coming in and out. Mostly it is people coming to hand out food or help clear debris. But a very small percentage of those people are thieves, sadly.

At least everyone made it through safely. And she still had most of her jewelry.

Actually Wildwood fared rather well. I'm kinda embarrassed to write this amidst all the kaos, but, I have a house a block from the beach and my potted plant never even blew over on the picnic table.:waitasec:

Anyone looking for additional news about NJ, can go to Jersey Shore Hurricane News on facebook. It is unbelievable the amount of information they are providing. They have been a God send for those of us living at the shore.

Info on Staten Island can be found at www.silive.com

at first i was outraged at the homeowner, after further reading, it became apparent that Ms. Moore did not have the children with her during her attempts to ask for help ( by the time she threw the flowerpot, the babies were probably dead)

Does anyone think it's strange that there are no further updates or clarifications of this story? In several media outlets last week the articles stated that the funerals would be a public event , due to the high profile nature of this story and how it has gripped peoples hearts.

I'm thinking, that CNN and others ran this story as a media sensation blaming the homeowner, Alan, and no longer wants to touch it after further investigation by LE, and perhaps by the fact that many different versions have surfaced, many of which state that the mother lost the kids before approaching any homeowner?

thoughts?
