So exactly when was this guy let out of prison?? And I thought you got life in prison for kidnapping. And he had 3 victims?? Wow.

  • #862
He participated in a faith-based 18 month treatment program while in prison and successfully completed it. Klunder denied physically harming his ex-wife but admitted to being addicted to cocaine and having a violent temper.

Question: I read earlier he had a strong religious streak? Belonged to an
area Fundamentalist church?

Any history of drugs? Any strong faith-involvement in anti drug activity or
statements?

if anyone knows ...

two points:
look at Holly's map above...this guy gets around. Thank you Holly for putting this together, the area this crime was committed in is much larger than I envisioned.
Edale to 7 Bridges is not out of the question based on the map of the current crime.

Also, look at his charges on iowacourtsonline...there are additional domestic abuse charges that were filed against him as well. they were dismissed, but no idea why.
Plus in the articles it appears more charges as a juvenile per Edale LE that we do not even know about.
wow, I cannot believe he got out of prison.

They not only need to check the girls case, but any others from the time this guy got out of prison!
Wish we knew what his previous vehicle was; LE should let that be known to the public in my opinion to see if that jogs anyone's memory.

agree! :banghead:

Ok. This is what Ive read elsewhere, now... extent of his drug addiction and network ? After his (religious awakening, recent?) has he taken a strong anti drug stance? Does he have a drug connection to Waterloo! ... or, to any of the people Dan was connected with?

All excellent questions.

If it does turn out this guy is involved, there's going to be some explaining to do...

Thank goodness The Des Moines Register & their investigative reporter is on top of this case. IMO the local Waterloo area media did whatever the authorities told them to do....this is not free speech.

Well... he doesn't LIVE in the Evansdale area. Distance alone would probably take him off the radar for eastern Iowa. Until his name surfaced in some recent context in eastern Iowa. If he isn't even in the dna data base ... !?

Just lots of questions.

To me, some tangible connection has to be made that connects him to the
general Waterloo area in the last several years .. it comes down to having
a tangible connection. It comes down to proof, as we are all painfully
aware.

I just had to bring more of this article on the thread. Mind you, Scranton was retired from LE, yet what about other LE that are still active duty who knew of this 🤬🤬🤬. Prison personnel knew of his history also! His family knew of his history! No doubt Scranton feels like garbage for not making the phone call to confirm this guy was still incarcerated. BANGING MY HEAD ON MY DESK!

Paul Scranton was police chief in Charles City in 1991. In an interview with the Des Moines Register on Wednesday, he said he was “stunned” to see Klunder back in the news. He said he didn’t know Klunder had been released from prison.

“His disregard for human life was stunning in that he threw the kids away like trash,” Scranton said.

Scranton – who went on to serve as chief in Indianola and then Ankeny until his retirement in 2002 – says Klunder is on the list of the worst criminals he ever pursued. When the two toddlers were pulled from the dumpster, one girl had been choked.

From his perspective, Klunder deserved life in prison, Scranton said.

“I’m convinced at the time of his crime in the ‘90s, that he thought at least one of the two girls was dead that he threw in the dumpster,” he said. “He had just a total disregard for their safety and welfare.”

Scranton didn’t know until he saw the news of the Dayton case that Klunder had been released from prison. Klunder’s name even came to mind last July when he saw news coverage of the disappearance of Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook-Morrissey from Evansdale, Scranton said.

Then, Scranton took solace believing that Klunder was still incarcerated, he said.

Doesn't take much to recall that Jaycee and Shawn, just to name two, were held in captivity outside of their own neighborhood. I'm shaking my head wondering when LE was planning on expanding their search of suspects beyond their own county?! This person of interest/suspect fell in their laps. Is this what they were hoping to happen? Or for the monster to strike again, so there would be more evidence available. Trying to control my snarkyness, but it's accountability time.

All excellent questions.

He's running with new paper tags -= new vehicle. New registration.

Where is the vehicle he had last year? And the tire prints on it ? (his old registration)?
What evidence lurks in that vehicle?

A simple memo to police departments or a search of court records looking for information about someone convicted of kidnapping two children at once would have put him on their radar.

For example:

Does anyone know of a suspect/convict involved in double juvenile kidnapping?

Can you please perform a search of convicted kidnappers to look for similarities, such as kidnapping two children at once?

Can you look at records of sex offenders in a two hour radius from Evansdale and see if any have a history of abducting two children?

To all parole/probation officers: Do you know of anyone you are monitoring that has kidnapped two children at the same time?

Surely, in 10 months this could have been accomplished.

Taking both girls was the most distinctive feature of this whole case!

Thank goodness The Des Moines Register & their investigative reporter is on top of this case. IMO the local Waterloo area media did whatever the authorities told them to do....this is not free speech.

I learned a lot this past week from my son who is a Deputy Sheriff and was deeply involved in a missing person case here that came to a conclusion on Wednesday night. I had mentioned to my son that they ought to put his case on Websleuth and he told me that they have to be very careful what the put out there because of liability issues and possible lawsuits. He told me everything has to be approved because of legal issues. This guy was an 80 year old who was visiting his son for the weekend and who woke up early Sunday morning and found the keys to his son's vehicle and took off before anyone knew he was missing. This gentleman had dementia. He left just wearing a white t-shirt and underwear and unfortunately the car was full of gas. Tire tracks showed that this guy had gone right and that's all the info my son had to go on. Oh yes, and he got a 5 hour head start on everybody before anybody realized he was even gone. That guy could have easily gone 400 miles in any direction and they looked that county over and over and over again. All surrounding states were notified to be on the lookout for this vehicle. Nobody saw anything. My son said they had to get everything approved before they were allowed to release any info and like with Kathlynn's county they had a facebook page setup telling everybody what was going on at what time, which I think worked out better than the case with Elizabeth and Lyric. Unfortunately the little old fellow drove off the road into a field and over a hill which put him out of view for passersby and ended up next to a lake where he got the vehicle stuck in the mud. He tried to get the vehicle unstuck but when he couldn't get it to budge he set off on foot and apparently it was too much for his body to handle any longer and they found him dead lying in the mud a ways from his vehicle. They didn't release any info until this morning out of respect for the family but by the wording on the press release you could tell it wasn't going to be good news. During the course of this investigation someone had put the word out that this guy had been located long before he was and that rumor spread like wild fire and people stopped looking for this guy and that's one reason why my son stated they have to be careful of what they say and what they publish. Rumors and wrong info can hammer an investigation and in this case they may have been able to get to this guy in time to have been able to save his life to get him the help he needed, but people stopped looking for him because of the rumors flying around. I just share this with you all to give you an idea of how LE operates first hand and this was not a criminal investigation so things would be tighter if it had been. In the end it was the Civil Air Parole that was able to locate this guy.

sorry, sick question...
remember when we all had the pig discussion way back?
can pigs eat a human being/other stuff at a hog confinement?
if so, no telling what else this guy possibly could have covered up or evidence he could have disposed of in the past.

Sadly, horrifically, the answer is 'yes'. If you Google 'Robert Picton' in BC, Canada, you will see his sick story. He was a pig farmer and is in jail, found guilty of murdering women on his pig farm. The police spent months sifting the soil at his pig farm for evidence.

Near where I live, long, long ago, a family disappeared from their farm. The hired man was accused of murdering them, and dumping their bodies in the pig pens. Stories passed down say the police and searchers found only human teeth in the soil in the pens.

Way upthread, when feral hogs were discussed, I kept thinking of these 2 stories. And the very brave WS member who went to all the hog buildings out in the country and took photos. I was worried about her in those places. I have suspected killers besides Robert Picton have used pigs or hogs to dispose of bodies. So sickening.

It's bigger than that, to me.

We know the FBI was involved in this one...allegedly, they still are.

Is it too much of a stretch to ask that kidnappers of children be permanently flagged, so that when a kidnapping crime occurs, their name crops up? I thought that's what computers were for - searchable databases. :banghead:

Am I being totally foolish to hoped that there is some sort of concerted effort made to track offenders against children?

It seems like no one ever heard of this guy, yet here he is, a known double kidnapper fresh from jail, ripe and ready to go, and there's Evansdale/Bremer connections all over him.

I had hoped that there were child protection task forces throughout the FBI and other agencies, who had a handle on this sort of thing, at least to the point of making themselves familiar the names of known abductors of children - especially in their own state.

Apparently I was wrong. :maddening:

Hogs will eat a human being. They will eat almost anything.

Even LE should know that sex offenders have been known to drive hundreds of miles to molest a child. This guy having new tags on his vehicle put up a red flag for me. I hope we know soon if he was involved.

Exactly - not to mention the fact that they REPEATEDLY stated "we have REASON to believe the girls are still alive" and also mentioned they had evidence to back that statement.

I'm still not sure there is a connection, but I am very surprised that this guy wasn't even checked into. I mean honestly, with 10 months passing they have had plenty of time to expand their search much further than the locals. This is, of course, IF they have a reason to even be looking into sex offenders. We don't know what evidence they have - there may be no connection whatsoever. :(
