Yes. I would assume the search warrants that LE got for BK's homes and car would include his footwear since a footprint is mentioned in the PCA.

I doubt they would let him keep the shoes he was wearing at the time of his arrest. JMO.

Small towns in the western US generally don't have public transit, except maybe directly to/from the university only. A person who is deeply committed to going without personal transportation could do it, as does anyone who can't afford a vehicle or who loses their driving privileges. But it becomes a royal hassle. I'd say just about everyone who can manage access to a personal vehicle will want one.

It does. Half-remittance for TA's in good standing (if 10 hours a week). Full remittance at 20 hours of TA'ing a week.

But it does not say that every incoming person into the Ph.D. program is given that number of hours.

However, your source makes it clear that BK needed to change his license plates (etc) and had one year to do so, in order to keep his "remittance."

When a person gets to candidacy, they do get a complete tuition waiver. But that's 3 years away and BK needed a certain GPA to get the 50% waiver to come back in Spring. First year doctoral students don't usually get the 20 hours a week of TA-ing. They're competing for that.

So his experience at end of semester (with the prof pretty much having to use student organizers to confront him) indicated to him that he might not even get the 50% waiver.

Could be a part of the motive - grad student murderers often have something like that in their "dossier."

Yes, BK was a PhD "student," as one does not achieve candidacy until after their department's qualifying exams and at that point become ABD (all but dissertation).

I didn't attend WSU for my PhD, and I don't think this is really relevant anymore, but I do feel compelled to clarify that PhD students (not just candidates) receive a tuition waiver. PhD students really need the waiver during the first several years because that's when they are in coursework -- it would make no sense to not supply a waiver until candidacy if a school wanted to remain competitive. It's also why, for example, students are asked to attain in state residency within the first year of their degree -- it saves the university money in the long run, as they are not covering out of state tuition for the 5+ years it might take to complete a PhD. [I do think this is relevant info -- that's probably why BK recently changed to a WA plat, for example] Sorry, @10ofRods to harp on my point -- ultimately, probably not all that relevant, but I want to share helpful info if I can!

Back to the point, though, it's intriguing to me that BK had only just begun his PhD work and had many years and lots of work ahead of him and committed this crime. If he was excited to pursue this work and progress as a doctoral student, he must have felt fairly confident he could get away with the crime (or he did more than he had planned to at King road). He was probably fairly secure in his position (the real precarity doesn't set in until exams, lol), although I agree with others that he might have had another job to help pay the bills or even just to build up a savings, which is difficult to do as a PhD student.

Yes, I know but post is referring to after the murders when he turns his phone back on and is way South in the vicinity of Blaine (begins pinging). Some were speculating on why he turned his phone back on then and one suggestion was that after randomly driving south to get as far away from the scene as possible (not returning home to Pullman immediately) maynhave been because he lost his way.

ETA Mean to write, speculation was he could have turned phone back on near Blaine, and not when he got home, because he had lost his way and needed to use google maps or the like to reorientate.

Sure hoping there were no similar types of crime on his way home. It's a nagging thought that I have. Ugh.

I think maybe you and I are moving on to questions about motivation - which may never be answered, but you are right, in that regard, I can't settle down to any one theory - but I'm not sure I feel the need to do so.

It's making me think a lot about BK's life experiences, for sure.

So, you're hoping he writes something, right? I am hoping so too, but then I feel bad about hoping that he has that experience.

I read Jesperson's "autobiography" (much like the BTK "memoir"). They cannot profit monetarily (but someone will) but they get to kind of immortalize themselves (in their own minds and in the pixels of the internet).

I feel like I have some ideas about his motivations, and it's possible there is nothing beyond what we already know. But I sure would like to know if any specific things triggered him in the weeks and months before the crimes.

I'm still of the opinion he had murder on his sick little mind before moving to WA. He moved there purposely to commit this cowardly act. He was stalking his victims within weeks of moving there and thought his brilliance (lol) would allow him to get away with murder. It is a shame this demented scum is receiving the notoriety I'm sure he craves. ..ugh jmo

I feel he was new to car driving and ownership. It was probably something his parents promised if he got through school (and it's not uncommon for parents to do that, right?)

But he did not need a car at all. There's no way it was an economical choice (IMO, given gas prices out here in the west and the distances traveled).

Welllll, it's my understanding that the car was registered in the name of one of BK's parents, so he didn't own a white car. Captain Analytical, they call me.

Do we know if the WA plates he got were still registered in his mother's name or if he took ownership of the car and plates are in BK's name?

And from what I can tell, that car was already in his name and he just re-registered it in WA from PA.

I think he was silent because he was more interested in what everyone else was saying and thinking. He already knew what he would say so there was no point in his speaking. I think he treated the class sessions as an oral survey and made mental notes of the responses.

So I live more southeast and know a ton of LDS kids who go out west for college (Utah and Idaho). And of those who take a car, it’s very common for the parents to fly out and drive with them. Also with the major airport being so far away, it’s hard to leave a car behind since you really can’t Uber there and it’s not great to leave a car at the airport for a month or so, so many opt to just drive home and have their cars while home. Just my experience on the matter. Definitely agree it’s not related to the crime, but just a dad being a dad to his youngest child.

IMO, can't think of a more compelling reason for BK to want to have his car at home with him in PA over 2,000 miles away for the holidays before returning to school in Idaho if it was used in the murders & later was seized by LE. Then a few weeks later drive it all the way back to Idaho on his own?, or was he cleaning it at 4 am at his parents house & putting the waste in their neighbors trash can to get it ready to sell to someone on Craigs List? JMO

Most people in PhD programs receive a stipend, an 'annualized salary' paid out biweekly, or whatever the system of pay is for the University. And another poster noted they are now allowed to enter into other employment. They do not pay tuition but contribute to the University by acting as TA's, or doing research, and of course by helping with or doing their own research artifcles for publication. 'Publish or Perish."

WSU does not have full rides for most of its students. It has about a 70% acceptance rate, with some of the students working (TAing) as their main subsistence. Not annualized as a stipend unless they are selected to TA. I realize BK was selected. And apparently did well enough to get the same aid for Spring - but do you know that his OOS tuition was fully paid for without loans??

Which schools don't require tuition for grad school? And I'm certain that WSU requires tuition of grad students (through loans or fellowships - but they are still paying - it is a form of income, it's not just free). They don't get tuition free until they are ABD.

Are there private schools in the US that really have this pattern? I thought most required tuition in some form until ABD - it's such a carrot for doctoral students.
