ID - Charles Smith & Christina Haynes for child abuse, St Maries, 2008

It's truly a shame, isn't it colomom?

I'm feeling physically sick just thinking about what this poor little girl went through. I read this earlier article, which states that most of her scalp was 'pulled up' and she is missing most of her hair. I'd never even heard of such a thing before, but imagining it is just horrific!

And, the county prosecutor, Douglas Payne, said it was the worst case of child abuse he'd ever seen!

They were either dragging her or holding her by her hair-that is how her scalp was pulled up and away from her skull. I am betting the turkey baster and the cup had her bowls or bladder...did any of you read Sybil?

This case leaves me speechless, almost hollow. Who are these women that are so weak they let these men destroy their children? I don't get it....

Oh god yeah, I read Sybil...changed my outlook forever. I thought the same when I read about the "tools" of their abuse.

Torture of a child is lower than low, sicker than sick and Satan's playground. And I am NOT a religious person.

Evil, plain and simple.

I was trying not to sound jaded with my earlier post. I am a mandatory reporter to CW if there is any suspected abuse or neglect or even if I have third hand info about suspected abuse or neglect. I have been actually laughed at by CW workers for making a report that the screener obviously felt was a waste of her time. Calling the Police doesn't do much better unless the abuse is extremely obvious and blatant, which is rarely the case, especially early on. There is definitely something wrong with the system when multiple reports of abuse/neglect can go uninvestigated.

While I can appreciate the lack of action taken in most cases Zanko, maybe because nobody is bleeding, I will not be still. I will make such a nuisance of myself that they will arrest me for calling so often. I don't care who laughs.

I agree with your last sentence...totally.

Liz, thank you for the link and info. You would think the teacher would notice if a teenager noticed.

FWIW, I had a long conversation with a friend who was a corrections officer in a unit that housed inmates who had committed crimes like this. He said the public has no idea how much these inmates are hated-even the ones who are guarded get spit on, feces flung at then and urine...they are constantly screamed at and threatened by other inmates, and if they are not in a protection program, let's just say what we have read and imagine is not the half of what they go through...male or female. Small consolation I suppose, but there is a rough justice...

Yes Liz - thanks for clarifying for me. I was angry and not checking to make sure I made sense

This is a very disturbing case and unexcusable on so many different levels.

Given some things that have happened in my area, I second the recommendation to call the police. I believe the police have to respond, at least in CA and unlike CPS, the police can not wait 10 days if "they" don't think it is serious. You can just ask for a "welfare" check. Things seem to fall into place much faster when the police are notified.

Salem, no prob. Actually I had to read back as I didn't even know what you were referring to. You're sure right about this being disturbing and unexcusable.

Yesterday I found some comments on a blog, and one or two people claim to know "Charlie". They were going on about what a sweet guy he was and how he'd never do anything to hurt a child. Depriving a child of medical care that almost killed them is pretty harmful, imo!

Oh, apparently meth seems to be the general consensus.

I wonder how little Kyra is doing? Anyone heard anything?

I haven't seen anything new for the past 2 days. I just re-read a few of the articles. If I was this little girl's mom, I would shoot the bast*!&. I wonder if we can send messages to him and her mom while they are in jail. Or maybe to the other inmates giving them all the details available in the media. What sick, sick, sick POSs.

Surgeons removed all the toes from Kyra Wine’s left foot, part of the toes on her right and part of a pinky finger.

As the 3-year-old lay in a hospital bed at Sacred Heart Medical Center recovering from surgery, she asked her grandma for an orange popsicle.

“She was savagely devouring a red popsicle when I got there,” Deanna Wine said. “She was on her third.”

Then she asked for an orange one.

They thought the dead skin on the toddler’s hands, feet and buttocks were freezer burns. The child may have been put in a freezer as a disciplinary measure. Investigators considered that too, said Benewah County Sheriff Robert Kirts. “It was one of the possibilities we discussed because of the condition of her feet,” Sheriff Kirts said. Officers have since ruled it out. “We don’t think so,” he said. Dehydration seemed a more likely cause of the deadening of the extremities Haynes and Smith told deputies they weren’t sure how the injuries occurred. According to a deputy report, the couple seemed indifferent of the toddler’s condition. Smith’s preliminary hearing is scheduled June 30 at 1:30 p.m. A hearing date for Haynes is pending. The case is under investigation. In addition to the dead flesh on her extremities, Kyra suffered injuries elsewhere on her body. “She had wounds here and there,” said her grandmother. “Those are healing up really well.” Doctors are monitoring the remaining digits for signs of healing. More surgeries could follow. “We don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Mrs. Wine. “We don’t know what may come up.” She said the family has a benefit fund at the St. Joe Credit Union for Kyra’s future medical issues. “It’s for those things that Kyra will need, that Medicaid won’t pay for,” she said.

Prior to the above report, both Haynes and Smith had preliminary hearings scheduled for 1:30 on Monday, June 30th.

Then the report above, had Haynes' hearing postponed. Now both Haynes' and Smith's preliminary hearings have been postponed.

I'm getting worried that prosecutors may not have sufficient evidence to hold these two, and that's why the postponement. I bet that lady that called the cops is concerned about these two getting out of jail. Gee, let's pray that there is enough evidence to keep both these sub-humans incarcerated for a long time so the children, their father, and the community in general will be better.

This story makes me want to cry and also to hate with a passion those pair of cretins......I'd love to see them locked in a freezer along with all those saying what a "sweet" guy he was.......Ugh!!

Not to sound like a *itch here but where was Grandma when the little girl was being abused?

Maybe grandma was the one who turned them in. It said the reporter called because she was not allowed to see the children. If I read it correctly.

The babysitter was not allowed to see them as well. I look several times a day for updates on this case...I want to know why, although I will never receive the answer.

I'm with you believe09 - this one really gets to me too! This poor baby was really let down by the system.

It sounds like Grandma is the dad's mother, so I would venture to guess haynes kept her away from the children as much as she was able to. I don't really know, I'm just guessing. Or, she could live in another state and just came to be with Dad and the girls when she found out what happened? Grandparents don't always live close.
