Possibly secrecy—they can explore evidence without disclosing it to defense attorneys and the press, which could “contaminate” potential jurors.In Idaho the prosecutor has a choice, GJ or the court. Both can be sealed so wonder what the benefit is?
When I hear “grand jury” I immediately think of the Jon Benet Ramsey case, where prosecutors went to a grand jury seemingly to have an excuse not to prosecute John and Patsy. (JMO as they refused to prosecute even though the grand jury recommended indictment—a recommendation the DA kept from the public until leaked by a grand juror years later.)
In this case, secrecy seems the more likely motive as the DA doesn’t appear to be bending over backwards to protect Lori and Chad.
I sincerely hope secrecy is the driver and not a lack of confidence that they have enough evidence to convict.
