Won’t fly with a jury and will only make him look very stupid. But wait... maybe not a bad idea if he wants to go with an insanity defense. Paranoid schizophrenia maybe? :D
If he is guilty, can you imagine the jury's reaction to the GMA interview when it is shown in court?

Honesty, empathy and education.
I could not agree more, that's exactly the lesson that should be learned from all of this.

"institutionalized racism" is a ridiculous term that needs to go in the dust bin along with "hate crime." Racism is something people practice by choice. An institution isn't a person and can't be racist. Only the people in it can. Softening up the language just takes the focus off where it needs to be: people choosing to do evil things.

This case is obviously very emotionally charged from many different sides.
Do you think SNL will address it? Do you think they should?
Very curious to see where SNL will draw their boundaries.

They have no boundaries when attacking the right. But I doubt they will broach an attack on the left at this time. JMO

Yet we have people like Smollett using racism and heterophobia. By the way, there are no laws against any people. This is the 21st century. Lets not dwell in the past, it only makes things worse.
ITA. Dwelling on history has made things worse and that has been the intent.

Number one, the "past" is as little as a few years ago. Oppressive laws have been in place all over until recently. Number two, the reasons for those laws stem from entrenched attitudes that don't disappear simply because the laws change or because people decide to be colorblind. Number three, the effects of a couple hundred years of institutionalized racism continue today. And effect attitudes today.

Smollet as other hoaxers are capitalizing on on-going racism and homophobia that is absolutely rampant in our society. Right now.

Visit any yahoo comments section on any crime committed by anyone with a Hispanic last name or who is black and you'll see. It's insane.

This is not the past. It's now. Which makes it even more disgusting that someone would lie about something like this. He needs to pay serious consequences for this.
What is "institutionalized racism"? I'm not familiar with the term. Thanks.

Whether JS is guilty or not, the fact is, he was preaching hate.
He could have made a much more constructive decision by using this national platform as a teaching experience and a provide a positive way to learn and move forward.
Too bad he didn't choose to do that, it was all about him.

We should not dwell on the past, rather we should learn from the past and make sure history does not repeat itself.

Well said. What the heck does "institutionalized racism" even mean?

No. It's not. There has never been a history of institutionalized oppression against heterosexuals or white people. There have never been laws against straight people or white people.

When white, heterosexual people face two hundred plus years of discrimination, then we can talk.
Sorry, grew up in the northeast and the history is rich.. Irish Americans, Italian americans (1911 Dillingham report), and for heterosexuals you can say mormons for their polygamist ways or heterosexuals losing their jobs because they are not a protected class and discriminated on their views..

How do we start to constructively move forward?
Put possible criminals/liars like Mr. Smollett in jail for their hateful crimes ???

Institutional racism was defined by Sir William Macpherson in the 1999 Lawrence report (UK) as: "The collective failure of an organization to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture, or ethnic origin. It can be seen or detected in processes, attitudes and behaviour which amount to discrimination through unwitting prejudice, ignorance, thoughtlessness and racist stereotyping which disadvantage minority ethnic people.

So very true.
There was sign in a store window in Monroe, WI (would have been in the 1920's or 1930's) "Help Wanted - Irish need not apply".

So well said, however it doesn't stop there.. the innuendos of blacks or a minority group being the bogey man in the 80's is now replaced by straight white males. The times I have to "deprogram" my child much like my mom had to do for us in our minority household is astounding. The foster kids I mentor and their foster siblings thoughts on "whites" is absurd. So many teaching moments I have about judging people for their actions and not their skin color among other life lessons is really what I try to hit home. There is profit for division, on both sides, but stepping out of the victim role and into a victor role is where I try to reside.. unity and tolerance not identity pecking order and acceptance of everything under the sun.

Yes, and see any yahoo comments on Smollett's and other hoaxes, and you see just as much racism. I despise all racism, I'm weird that way.

Try telling that to those who are focused on the darkest part of history and refuse to acknowledge the brightest parts of history where laws were changed so that we as a nation can move forward.
